The Most Metal Game Ever
Just to clearly depict my extreme bias towards this game I will preface my review by stating that Brütal Legend is my game of the year for 09. Yeah, it's like that.
So why no perfect 5 star rating? Because if it were that good I would still be playing it right now rather than writing about it. No, seriously, the game isn't perfect, but I consider any quibbles with the game to be just that, quibbles. Screw quibbles, screw them to a rotting wall of flesh with a massive rusty screw through each eye and out the back of the skull with another in the mouth which has grated through the spinal column. The only real problem with the game? There isn't enough of it. The main story can be completed in 6 hours and a number of the main characters are left only slightly fleshed out.
So what sets the game atop the pile of corpses of all those who appose it? Metal. The entire experience of the game is so awesomely, unabashedly soul consumingly Metal. From the various opening screens featuring one of the many voice talents featured in the game (Ozzy, JB, Lemmy, etc...) belting out "Double Fine" to the final decapitation, every angry inch of the world is drenched in the attitude, sounds and aesthetic of Metal.
Speaking of sounds, this game has the best soundtrack of all time. It's your right to dissent so go ahead... now shut up. Best soundtrack ever.
Last point of contention, multiplayer. Playing on PS3 it can be tough to find a game, as in it takes like 15 minutes. Once you get in a game there's a 70% chance you're opponent will immediatly surrender and then send you a message asking to boost to 50 wins for the trophy. Pansies. If you find a game where the other player actually wants to play there will be a war. You will have to develop a strategy based around units you will not have a complete understanding of. Wicked.
In summation, this game is damn near perfect for anyone who appreciates metal, loves bloodletting and has a sense of humor. Glory to Succoria.
