In video games, breaking the fourth wall occurs when a game becomes aware of its nature as a game, or when a character directly acknowledges the player.
Darkness is used in games to restrict access, increase tension, or just to set a mood. Often the player has access to a light source that can mitigate its effect.
First-Person is a vantage point that attempts to simulate looking through a game character's eyes. It is most commonly found in first-person shooters, racing games, and visual novels, and to a lesser extent in other genres, such as RPGs, 3D platformers, and adventure games.
Some rooms have faulty lights that flick on and off. Often this is used in horror games to help build an unsettling atmosphere.
These spooky entities are the spirits of the dead, returned from beyond their graves for generally sinister purposes. There's generally about even odds whether a particular ghost will be helpful or malevolent towards the living, but some ghosts just want to be left alone entirely.
The ability of a player to interact with items or geometry in the game world, whether for story or gameplay reasons or simply for immersion.
Horror games influenced predominantly by the look, feel, and themes of Japanese horror cinema, or non-horror games that allude to the cultural horror aesthetic. J-Horror, or psychological horror, is sometimes classified as a sub-genre of survival horror.
A method of attempting to scare the player by the sudden unexpected occurrence of an event - often accompanied by some sort of audio sting.
Toys that come to life, whether in the form of lovable action figures with personalities of their own, or psychotic dolls possessed by the souls of deceased serial murderers.
Sometimes one playable character just isn't enough.
A medical professional whose primary role is that of a caretaker and doctor's assistant. They are stereotypically female, however they can be of either sex.
A traditional Japanese vengeful ghost. Common appearance tropes include long, stringy black hair (which usually obscures the face) and a white dress or kimono.
This is when a game removes the ability for a player to save during certain sections of the game. This is usually done towards the end of the game to increase difficulty. This isn't the same as save points; players must actually have their save ability taken away from them.
Special locations in game that allow the player to manually save their progress.
Scary Children in scary games. Some speak, some don't but they all stare.
Games whose titles consist of a single word.
It's the designer's go-to guy. If they want to steer a player in a given direction they'll lock an in game door and force the player to find a way to either unlock it or find an alternate route.
Voice Acting is the art of providing voices for characters in games, television shows, films, radio programs, and other forms of media.
A woman whose husband has died.
Games that send and post special information on the Wii console's message board in the system menu. Such postings can include messages or images.
Wii games that use the speaker of the Wii-remote to emit phone conversations encouraging the player to hold the Wii remote as a telephone against their ear.
