Calvin Johnson was a popular wide receiver for the Detroit Lions. On December 22, 2012, he broke Jerry Rice's record for most receiving yards in a single season, thus possibly breaking the "Madden Curse" as he was on the cover of Madden 13. Due to his size and strength, he was nicknamed "Megatron" after the Transformer of the same name.

Johnson was always viewed as one of the top receivers in the league until his abrupt retirement in 2016. Having only played nine seasons in the league, his early retirement was compared to the also-sudden retirement of fellow Detroit Lions great Barry Sanders. Calvin cited the Lion's losing ways (they only made the playoffs twice, never winning a game), as well as the physical toll of playing in the NFL as reasons for his retirement.

Since retiring, Calvin Johnson went on to open a medical cannabis dispensary in Michigan and partnered with Harvard University to study the possible effects of cannabis on treatment of CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a neurodegenerative disease found in many former football players.
