Who should replace Dan? Fantasy draft list
This topic is locked from further discussion.
@savage: I'd really like that.
Danny or Mary would be perfect, but I don't see that happening. I'm guessing they're getting someone new. And considering every new GB hire have been great, they'll probably find someone good new as well.
Considering their last three hires have been out of house instead of siphoning off GameSpot staff I don't think Mary is going to happen, as well as she fits.
But I could be totally wrong.
Only thing I want is a new voice. Dan, Jason, and Austin were great choices because they all brought new views (however weird they might be) to discussions. Dan has a weird antagonistic, yet strangley mainstream personality that worked well against Jeff and Brad's calm, worldly lifestyle (every time I hear Brad exclaim "Fucking what?!" because of Dan I feel amazing). He has an infectious energy around him that makes others more relaxed and true to themselves. I've seen Drew, for example, get more confident infront of the camera (not to say he wasn't confident before Dan, but he just seemed to be more relaxed when paired with Dan for MGScanlon).
Whoever they get on the West Coast to fill Dan's spot should have a positive impact on everybody at Giant Bomb, not just the viewers. I'd still love a girls point of view on Podcasts and the like. The boys club is getting kind of stale.
I know this is just a joke thread, but any semi-serious list relating to this topic should be exclusively female. It would be absolute PR suicide to replace Dan/Austin with another male at this point.
Mary needs someone like Dan to play off to be truly effective in breaking the Jeff+Brad lows.
What I'm saying is a Lang+Kish double team would be incredible.
@eastbound4: How so? I'm of the opinion that having a personality that mixes with the current group is more important than any diversity check-box someone thinks should be filled. If it happens to be a female, then so be it, but it shouldn't be a requirement.
@internetdotcom: WEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL. Finally, all the vape questions will finally have someone knowledgeable enough to answer them.

Rescue Mary Kish from Gamespot.
Rescue Carrie Gouskos from EA.
I'm sure she's happy with the salary and a move to Giant Bomb would probably be a salary downgrade, but she's just such a good on-air personality which is a talent I don't think she's using right now.
Safe to say it won't be Leigh Alexander.
P.s I'm not trying to talk shit, just remembering a piece of GB history with the (over the top) fallout after the e3 podcasts
Who should replace Dan? Whoever they choose.
But, just to play along, it would be either Bethany Massimilla (I liked her during the first StarCraft II livestream and the way the guys talk about her she seems like the right kind of nerdy) or Carrie Gouskos (she has a great chemistry with the OG duders and I like her sassy attitude.)
If I had all the power in the world, I would force Austin to come back here. Because I'm an asshole and I love that guy.
I'm hoping those are mostly joke choices, since half of them would never happen.
I legit don't know who can replace Dan in the West office. There's really no one out there that I'm interested in, which is a bit worrying. Wouldn't mind some new blood.
Considering how well they did hiring the "unknown" Austin, I'd say go that route again.
He really wasn't that unknown. I don't follow many games journos and even I had heard of him, from Stream Friends, with Phil Kollar.
It's never going to happen because she already works for CBSi and does a great work on Gamespot, but I wish they could get Mary Kish, she's a perfect fit on the west office. Danny would be great too but he has NoClip now.
@eastbound4: They should hire based on who's best for the job and fits well with the rest of the team, those factors are way more important than them pandering to some people who think they should have a diversity quota to fill.
I don't know who it will or should be, but I know ABSOLUTELY it shouldn't be a diversity hire. Not that I think that's even a concern. People have have been saying Giant Bomb "needs" this or that kind of person for a long time, but they've always just chose people the site needed, and it's always been great.
To actually answer the poll, Danny was like an honorary Bomber anyway, and I always wish he could have just made the switch. I regret to say I've never seen anything with Mary in it. Any recommendations?
I love Mary Kish but she is a producer and GB doesn't really need another one.
Yup, that's how I see it too. In some ways it'd probably be a step down for her since she'd likely get to do less of that stuff.
I really don't see why you can't look for someone who is "best for the job" so to speak, and who is also a person of color or a woman.
The two are not mutually exclusive.
Anyway, this was a fantasy draft which is why I picked Mary even though I know it will never happen.
@magmamud: That was never the problem. When you put skin color, gender, beliefs on the top of the priority list when it comes to choosing a new hire and real qualifications like chemistry with the rest, experience in the industry and knowledge of video games are secondary, that's the problem.
My only thought is that it should be two someones, assuming the budget is there. GB West has felt too small ever since GB East became a thing, and the various ideas for the future that Jeff has discussed won't ever realistically happen if there's still only three editors, two producers, and sometimes Matt Rorie available to do stuff.
@whatshisface: I mean it's obvious that the crew is going to look for someone who has great chemistry, experience etc for the job. Both can be priorities. When someone expresses wishes for diversity in a new hire, I've never assumed that they think everything else be secondary or not as important.
Rescue Mary Kish from Gamespot.
That's a harsh way of putting it, but yeah....
@stonyman65: No disrespect intended to the people working at GameSpot, but much like O'Dwyer I feel like her talent could be better surfaced elsewhere. It's both baffling and telling that the GS YouTube channel has millions of subs and yet their videos hardly break a couple thousands views.
I am also in favor of Jeff Green or practically anyone from the old school 1UP era.
Edit: fuck it, hire Phil Fish so we can really ruffle some feathers.
