Shoot and slice your way to victory in a cool suit 2

Editors note: This is a review I found I had written in 2008, for purposes unknown. I paste it here with the original score given at the time, with minimal editing for punctuation. If you are still on the fence about buying 2008's Dark Sector, hopefully this time authentic review will finally help you decide in 2015!Dark Sector is a fun game in the likes of Gears of War. The control scheme is almost exactly the same, so if you had played Gears beforehand then you'll have no problems at all swit...

Brutal and interesting combat among less satisfying gameplay elements 0

Dark Sector feels like a difficult game to review. On one hand, I look at the hamfisted dialogue and the paper thin premise, as well as what seem like misguided attempts at variety in the forms of puzzle and vehicle sections and instantly want to dismiss it. On the other hand, I look at its approach to third person shooting and combat in general and see a lot of ideas that I genuinely enjoy. Dark Sector is at its absolute best when it focusses on the latter, though its preoccupation with the for...

    Dark Sector isn't that bad...eventually 1

This game catches a lot of bad rap. A bad rap that I only partially understand. I'll explain. Much like in other games where you gradually gain powers over time, your character's powers don't actually start getting impressive until the 4th level. By then you're 40% done with the game. But after a boring start, the game really does get the ball rolling in terms of cool powers and gameplay elements (Aftertouch!!! It's so fun!!!) But, patience is a rare virtue indeed. Those who are patient with thi...

    cool idea...but falls short 0

Well D3 tried..ill give them that..the graphics are steller..and takes a good amount of gameplay off of Gears of War..the basic story to this game is that you play as Hayden (the emo government agent) and you are sent to the fake country of Lasria..and there seems to be some sort of virus spreading throught the country..and like most games..your job is to stop it before it spreads..kinda like RE4..at the start it plays just like a normal shooter..you duck in and out of cover and this works very ...

    A Solid RE4 Clone 0

No-one ever complains about safe and dependable cars.  Companies like Volvo and Subaru keep pumping out stolid, reliable cars that have basically looked the same for the last 30 years.  When it comes to games however, it is a different story. Safety and reliability often lead to mediocre critical and commercial success.  Which is pretty much how Digital Extreme's over-the-shoulder shooter was received in 2008 when it was released for the PC, 360 and PS3.Dark Sector itself, in a vacuum, has...

    Coolest. Game. Evarr. 0

Dark Sector is possibly the coolest game to come out yet this year. That doesn't necessarily make it the best game, but it's a guarantee that a game where you control a superhuman, and battle men with guns, as well as monsters has more than a few merits. In Dark Sector, you control US Super Cool Secret Agent Hayden Tenno, and your mission is to stop a bunch of terrorists from unleashing an evil disease upon the world. Early on, Hayden is infected with a "special" form of the disease, where he b...

Fun mechanics compensate a somewhat slow start 0

Graphics: 9Music: 5Story: 7Control: 9Difficulty: 8 Gameplay: 8Level design: 6 This game feels a lot like Gears of war and it isn't a bad thing. There's a covert system that works really good, controls are responsive, graphics are top-notch [for the moment when it was released], the music is there just to occasionally notice it and the levels are OK. What's important about this game is that throwing the glaive is fun, a lot of fun and it can lead to unlocking several achievements and even though...

    Disappointing squandered potential 0

Dark Sector didn't strike me as a game that contained much substance to it. It felt like a game that developed a unique element to it (the boomerang style glaive, and the powers associated with it), and combined it to a relatively tried and true mechanic (namely third person cover shooter) and put it together to make a game. Unfortunately beyond that foundation, and that's really all that is, a foundation, the makers completely failed to construct a compelling video game from this.  The game has...

Better than the sum of its parts. 0

Dark Sector's biggest claim to fame is probably its troubled development past. Announced way back in 2000, the game went through several major overhauls in gameplay and story before finally being released in 2008. The games story is definitely its weakest point. It opens with your character, Hayden Tenno (who is at least voiced nicely by Michael Rosenbaum) infiltrating some sort of prison, for reasons never really well-explained or even thought out. This is a problem prevalent throughout the ga...

    Fun, but nothing special. 0

I originally purchased Dark Sector because it was partially developed in London, Ontario which is where I live. The studio helped out on Bioshock so I figured this game can't be all that bad given the success of others. The thing I enjoyed most about the game was the glaive, a 3 sided throwing disc that can take your enemies apart and returns to the throwers hand. This is by far your most useful weapon/item as you can control it in-flight in a sort of "bullet-time" sequence if you will. The glai...

    Good, but not Great 0

I'll admit, I am one of the few that enjoyed this game. Sue me. Anyway, I feel as though the game didn't quite live up to it's potential. Makes me wonder what the game would have been like if it had stayed true to its original context. But I digress. The first level is fun, but won't blow you away. It's sort of a mix of Gears of War and Resident Evil. It's not until you get the glaive that the game gains its own identity. Too bad the glaive becomes too much of a focus throughout the game. It wou...

A unique but flawed game 0

Dark Sector isn't a great game, but it's not a bad game either.  Its one of those games that's worth picking up if it's cheap.  The game relies on the single mechanic of throwing a glaive.  The game introduces a few unique abilities along the way, but personally, I was always left wanting for more cool powers and abilities.  Using the guns felt necessary at points, and this annoyed me, because I really was hoping the glaive could be the end-all weapon in the game.  Despite the glaive being the m...

Resident Evil with a Glaive 0

Dark Sector takes you through Russian warehouses and other battlefields as you fight zombies and other infected sorts.  The typical story of our hero being infected by the very thing the bad guys are propagating is well in place, giving our hero Hayden a big glaive to toss around and chop assorted body parts off with. Most would say the game plays most like Gears of War with it's cover system and sprinting, but I would liken it more to Resident Evil 5 almost exactly.  The bad guys are rather limi...

Dark Sector almost hits the mark 0

Dark Sector is a game that manages to pluck a chord with fans of the Gears of War style third-person shooter with that familiar over-right-shoulder camera viewpoint. Unfortunately, being a clone often means that doing something new is out of the question. Dark Sector manages to take an old style, bring new game-play to it, but fails to do much more than that. Immediately after putting the game in, one will notice the breathtaking graphics of what you can only assume is the latest build of the U...

Dark Sector is a fun, satisfying, and visceral puzzle-action game 0

I came into Dark Sector not expecting too much, I only expected some mildly entertaining combat and decent graphics. But, as soon as I got to the second chapter, I realized, Dark Sector is amazing. With it's stunning graphics, fun, satisfying gameplay, and great voice acting and general sound design, I was suprised that it was deemed an average game by most critics. The game puts you in the shoes of Hayden, but the story the game gives you as to what's going on, is hard to make out. But it's okay...

    Dark Sector 0

Released in November of 2006, Gears of War was critically acclaimed for re-introducing the “cover system” style of game-play. Given the enormous amount of success enjoyed by that game, one would assume that any game making use of such a system would surely reap the same benefits; unfortunately for Dark Sector, that is not necessarily the case. In Dark Sector, you play as Hayden Tenno, a covert operative who, shortly after the beginning of the game, becomes infected by what is called the Technocy...

Like Gears from the Bargain Bin 2

How many people remember Dark Sector? Anyone? No? Well, I'm not surprised. The game had been in development ever since 2000, originally going to be a title about some space marine doing something in space, and after a few changes it eventually came out in early 2008 as "Rogue CIA agent kills people in generic-Soviet-breakaway-republic-istan, with zombies and a cool bladed weapon." Because all of the good games were either not out yet, or checked out by others, this was one of the few games left ...

4 Stars for the price 1

I paid under $20 for this game and it sounds, visuals and gameplay count for the price.  I read the reviews and didn't think it would be worth it, but I play almost everything.  If this game would have been the MSRP I think I would still have been happy with the purchase.  It's far from boring, but gets repeats a lot.  The game is not a failure buy any means.  If you can find this game at $20 by all means all this to your library.  It's something to play when you want to play something and feel ...

An interesting shooter that doesn't hold up after hours of play. 0

This is just a copy of my Gamespot review, as most of my first reviews will be. But I'll be working on some new ones for this site in the next few days.- - - - - -I rented this game the other day because there were many many copies at the video store and the cover looked interesting. Not necessarily a recipe for success when making a game, but Rainbow Six was gone so I figured I'd try it. The game itself seems to take it's feel from Bioshock and the story seems like it could head in that directi...

    Decent Action Shooter 0

I think the reviews for Dark Sector reflect the unrealistic hype that surrounded this game prior to release. Its was supposed to the first  "next gen" game with unmatched graphics, gameplay, etc.  Well, given that description, it would have to be put back in its place because it has the kind of flaws that many first and third person games have had early in this 360/PS3 generation. The games story lacks character development which means you're not going to care too much about the lead character "w...

    Kept me entertained 0

I know some people are calling this game a Gears of War ripoff and I don't deny it but the game itself was quite entertaining. The use of the glaive was fun and interactive but it did make it a little repetative. Getting new abilities for the glaive made it fun and exciting, not knowing what the next ability would be. It did have a few camera problems that I experienced throughout the game, the AI weren't very smart and it was too easy. The story wasn't as captivating as the game play itself was...

    Fun. Glaive. Action. 0

darkSector took a long time coming and it feels very polished. While the story could have been a little more fleshed out, I enjoyed the fiction and the setting. Don't want to spoil the experience for you so i'm not going to talk about it in more specifics details. I'll just say that it has that desolate feel and desperate mood of Resident Evil 4.The game uses its own proprietary graphics engine and it looks great. Very similar to Gears of War but with higher res textures and without the excessiv...

    Dark Sector--Review 0

I was shocked when I played Dark Sector for the first time. I've never seen a game make such a sad attempt at blatantly copying another game. I could put this review into one sentence but I wont.Single PlayerI guess I should mention the only good thing about the game first. The graphics are great. That's it.  They tried to reproduce Gears Of War. Everything down to the controls. Whats so sad is that they ripped off Gears of War and still managed to make it bad. Now I that they have every right t...

Dark Sector has a pretty face, but serious issues underneath 1

Dark Sector is an example of a video game clone gone wrong; a game that takes many of the aspects of a previous successful game (in this case Gears of War) but fails to add anything new or meaningful to the experience that would otherwise differentiate itself from the game it's copying.     The game starts you off as Hayden Tenno, a government agent sent to some part of the Soviet Union to prevent mysterious virus from destroying the world. During your mission of spalunking, you eventually find ...

Dark Sector is a mostly boring game 0

Dark Sector is one of those games that most gamers will play through once, then move on to something else without a second thought. One of the big selling points of Dark Sector is the glaive. This weapon is essentially a bladed boomerang. Yes, it's fun to use at first, but once you have chucked this thing at enemies a couple dozen times, the novelty wears off. Early on I realized that the glaive was actually less effective than simply using the games various guns. The most effective use for the ...

A very solid actiongame but it completely lacks personality. 0

Lets start by just stating what is already clear as daylight. Dark Sector is the most obvious Gears of War ripoff there will ever be. Exacly everything controls like Gears but not as smoothly. The camera works the exact same way, the shooting works the exact same way and the engine they are using actually looks a whole lot like Unreal Engine 3 even tho its not. Gears took alot of influenses from Resident Evil 4 and Dark Sector might be a bit more geared towards the RE4 parts of Gears of War and ...
