    Dark Souls

Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Sep 22, 2011

A quasi-sequel to From Software's action-RPG Demon's Souls, set in a new universe while retaining most of the basic gameplay and the high level of challenge. It features a less-linear world, a new checkpoint system in the form of bonfires, and the unique Humanity system.

    The Benchmark

Dark Souls is a Game. It is a game for gamers. The things we love about games; gameplay, challenge, reward, story, spectacle and enjoyment, Dark Souls has it all, refined to an astonishing degree. (Well, perhaps not enjoyment for some...)

GAMEPLAY is refined, precise and effective. There is enough variation in the weapons, both for ranged and close quarters combat, as well as an easy to use, but perhaps shallow, magic system. The lock-on system functions perfectly and complex timing for attack and defence animations is required for success.

CHALLENGE is the 'back-of-the-box' allure of Dark Souls, and in this department, it does not disappoint. It goes without saying that patience, skill and a supreme awareness of the virtual situation is required to see this game through to the end. The unique save system adds to the challenge, and is unquestionably an integral part of the experience in Dark Souls.

REWARD comes hand in hand with the challenge, and is not lessened in multiple playthroughs. The fact that the game is constantly saving your progress, once an enemy, becomes your greatest friend with each achievement you make and each step of progress that will see you through to the end.

STORY in Dark Souls is subtle, and like everything in the game, must be discovered.

SPECTACLE is not the most touted aspect of Dark Souls, perhaps as the graphics do leave something to be desired. However the design of each environment creates an incredible sense of atmosphere. The colour filters may seem like a cheap way to create diversity, however they do serve for memorable vistas and distinction between areas.

ENJOYMENT is something that must be earned in Dark Souls, perhaps only those who have finished the game can look back and truly appreciate it, but undeniably, it won't be everyone.

Dark Souls is the spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls which was a Playstation 3 exclusive created by Japanese game developer From Software and was released in late 2009. Dark Souls is yet again developed by From Software and is HEAVILY influenced by Demon’s Souls. In a perfect world you might be able to review Dark Souls as though Demon’s Souls had never existed, but frankly we don’t live in a vacuum in which Demon’s Souls never was. In truth, Dark Souls must be held not only to the absent but ...

Dark Souls is a genre-defining experience on so many levels. 0

Dark Souls is the very epitome of "hardcore" – here is a game that doesn't hold your hand and one that will mercilessly punish you for even the slightest error. Because in Dark Souls, you'll succumb to one untimely demise after another, but for every horrific death you'll suffer through and for every bit of progress lost, there's always a reward waiting for you. When you topple that boss that's been giving you trouble for hours upon end or when you manage to clear out that one area that...
