So having listened to last weeks bombcast and the extensive discussion they had about Dead Rising made me realize that Dead Rising is a CRAZY game. And I don't mean in they way you kill zombies, but in the core concepts like the RPG heavy mechanics, the fact that your level carries over, and how deliberate the movement and attack animations are.
I personally love Dead Rising and all it's crazy concepts. I'm just wondering what you guys think about Dead Rising? Why do you love it? Why do hate it? .
EDIT: Also lots of people are complaining about the save system. What was wrong with it? It seemed like any other RPG save spot system.
Dead Rising 2
Game » consists of 18 releases. Released Sep 02, 2010
Dead Rising 2 is a third-person action-adventure survival horror game that takes place five years after the end of the original Dead Rising, moving its zombie apocalypse setting into the glamorous Fortune City.
Dead Rising, Love It Or Hate It?
I hated it because my friend let me play his Wii version.
Don't play the damn Wii version. Didn't play the first one though the way it was meant to be played. Seems cool.
I hated it for five years.
I tried to "get it" once or twice every year since it's release but every attempt made me hate it even more.
My last attempt was about a month ago, it finally happened. It finally clicked with me and I can FINALLY move it from my "hate it" category to my "love it" category.
Love it, and thanks to last weeks bombcast I'm going to attempt 5 and 7 day survivor sometime this week! Last 2 achievements I need for DR.
Love it with one concession: I had to use a walkthrough to get the best ending. I don't know how you're supposed to just "know" where to go to activate the final event. Still, can't wait for Dead Rising 2!
As a zombie mayhem game Dead Rising was dull, but over all it was great game. I liked the challenge of trying to rescue every stupid NPC I could.
I loathed Dead Rising the first three or so times I played it. Then, for some reason something "clicked" and I understood what Dead Rising was about and was able to really enjoy what the game has to offer. Leveling up helps, but also not feeling like you failed if you miss a survivor helps too.
" I loved it until the convicts started rideing round in the first game. Fuck, I hate them. "AGREED! Man! It's SO HARD to get survivors through the courtyard when the convicts get there. One time I actually took the time to kill them, but once you leave the area they re-spawn. Grrr.
But I totally see what everyone says about taking it a while to "click". Also it is RETARDEDLLY HARD. I could not beat the game until I got the Megaman Cannon. (Yup, I got the genocider achievement. SUPER BORING!!!)
I don't like it. And it wasn't the fucked up levelling system or time constraints that put me off... it was the gameplay. Killing zombies just wasn't any fun.
I love it, but recognize it as an unfair, messed-up game that isn't for everyone.
Then again I dig games that punish sloppiness and reward persistence and obsessive completionism. I loved Demon's Souls for the same reason. Sure you needed a guide to set you in the right direction, but it's satisfying when you finally learn to master the game's tricky systems.
Still I do agree 100% with a twitter post Ryan made earlier. As much as I still like Dead Rising 1, the assholes in the Jeep that you meet within the first hour are the worst thing in gaming history. Fuck those guys.
I'm still angry about them. Serioiusly, what's their fucking problem?
I really want to love it, but whenever I play it (the first one) I have the same experience as Ryan. Zombie killing is really fun, but the survivors are fucking idiots and having to get past the convicts in the park is such a chore that I just want to throw my controller out the window.
Also the save system is shit.
I'd love Dead Rising if they had ditched the save system. Fact is, I have a difficult time sticking with any game that requires me to play for more than 30 minutes at a time without simply being able to save. I just don't have time. And there is nothing more frustrating that having to shut the game down knowing I'm going to have to replay that entire section just because I got called away and the game designers are stubborn about save points. Other than that, though, I liked what I played well enough.
Loved the first Dead Rising. Just as the GB crew were saying, it's a great game for people that have been playing games a long time, as long as you view stuff like the controls and friendly AI with some tolerance.
To me it's one of those games, along with stuff like Demon's Souls, that brings the all-too-rare spices of gaming back.
For those of you who can't wait to see what happens in Dead Rising 2, you can watch a playthrough of the game right now. Either on youtube.com or justin.tv. From what I've seen its pretty awesome, co-op seems to be the best addition of the game so far.
I was probably the biggest fan of the original Dead Rising. Don't get me wrong, that game is ass-backwards and perpetually stuck in 1992, but I've been playing video games my entire life, and it wasn't too hard to readjust to the way games were made in yesteryear.
I am pants-shittingly excited for DR2.
I really wanted to like the first one, but the time mechanic and the fact that you cant do everything in one playthrough definitely put me off. If it were just a GTA-style game with the ability to just wander aimlessly and kill zombies I would probably like it.
i loved it so damn much! def one of my early 360 favortites, it all started with the demo once i tried that out for an hour i ran out an bought it lol. It was challenging in the beginning but still loads of fun
Sadly i can't say i love it, feels like i'm playing the same game allover again. Granted i have only played a couple of hours, but i'm definitely not into as much as i was in the first one.
So i think i will just go for a quick finish, i don't see my self playing it 4-5 times through like i did the first one.
Dead Rising 1 had HORRIBLE AI, but I'm pleasantly surprised about how the NPCS act in DR2. They actually find ways through the waves of zombies and Sheldon get jumped. DR2 plays EXACTLY like DR1, save for better AI, tighter controls and bigger environments. My only complaint is that the frame rate isn't as stable as the old one(I'm running the 360 version here) and it can get problematic some times, but other than that it improves everything the first game did wrong.
Love it.
I recently have been thinking that the reason I enjoyed it was because I cheesed my way through the game with the 3-booked chainsaws and the Real Mega Buster at Level 50.
So a few weeks ago, I started playing the game again at level 1, without restarting the game at a higher level, and without the mini-chainsaws or Mega Buster. The game was harder, but still very manageable. I made it to Overtime mode in one playthrough without having to start over...and then Halo Reach came out. :P
I will note...the mannequin torso might as well be a power weapon considering it one-hit kills zombies and cultists, and special forces go down in two hits.
The only problem I have with the game is the stupid STUPID survivor AI. And it looks like they fixed that in Dead Rising 2.
A lot of complaints about the convicts, but once you figure out a strategy against them (mine being grab a sniper rifle from the gun store, stand on the roof of the picnic area, and wait for the convicts' dumb AI to get stuck on a tree, then snipe them from afar), they're not much of a problem. And the shortcut in Wonderland Plaza makes it so you can just skip them altogether for the most part.
I guess all this sounds easy to me now, since I had to do the "figuring it out" part many years ago.
It's driving me mad. I woke up in a good mood this morning, but I'm fucking furious now. I "get it". It's clearly quite clever in design. But it's also infuriating. I might have to wait for a walkthrough until I play it because I just don't understand how it wants me to play this game. I need to find a Zombrex, I have about ten minutes to do it. How the fuck do they expect you to find one?
I loved Dead Rising. On my first playthrough of 72 Hour Mode I decided to just stick to the story stuff and do what I could of the side missions. Got Ending A on the first go.
Then came 24 Hour Mode, and the Special Forces guys. I was maybe Level 34 or something decently high like that, and I just could not get passed them. There was one particular section in the grocery store where once you get the first aid kit (or the Windex, not sure which anymore), five Special Forces soliders rush through the door and shotgun you to death in a couple of seconds. I spent a good couple of months of on-and-off playing trying to finish that mode, and it never happened.
As a result, I fucking hate Dead Rising now, and I probably won't play Dead Rising 2 until I know something like that isn't in the game, or can at least be avoided. DR is a time sink, and I think it is a load of bollocks that you can get so far in the game and then hit a brick wall that basically forces you into an unwinnable state.
I only played the demo of the first game for like 10 minutes, but it wasn't as awesome as I expected. However, I didn't know your character would level up as you played, so that whole aspect makes me really want to play Dead Rising 2 right now. That and the double chainsaw paddle.
loved the first one. used to rock that game pretty easily, but it still had its challenges. really looking forward to the 2nd. glad it went multiplatform cause my xbox died a long time ago =/ and i hope the coop works as well as it did in the damn first looks and such...
I'm curious, experienced Dead Rising players, do you recommend I just blast through the story missions on my first-playthrough or try and get survivors. I've been faffing around with all the side-mission stuff, and I'm wondering if that's why I've stopped enjoying it. Although, to be fair, I was having fun until I hit a brick wall with a couple of the side-missions and then they wanted me to find Zombrex which I can't.
Appreciate your input! :)
