I can't imagine many of you are in the habit of purging old game save data, but here's a heads up if you are: do not delete your Dead Space save file if Dead Space 2 is on your wish list. According to a recent Joystiq report, the "original" Dead Space Plasma Cutter will be an instant unlock in Dead Space 2 for anyone with a save file from the first game (regardless if it reached completion status or not). This means those with the required data will be able to roll with the Plasma Cutter in the promising sequel from the get-go.
Any upgrades you've made to the Plasma Cutter during Isaac's first grand space adventure, however, will not make the transition to Dead Space 2. This is probably a good design decision, since it would be hard to build suspense or horror when a player can just bury 600 pumped-up laser pistol bullets into the first dozen or so alien baddies they run across in a game that's supposed to be all about slowly building atmosphere and tension.
Dead Space 2 hits January 25 across the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC and apparently all versions of the game will support this save file bonus.
