I can't imagine many of you are in the habit of purging old game save data, but here's a heads up if you are: do not delete your Dead Space save file if Dead Space 2 is on your wish list. According to a recent Joystiq report, the "original" Dead Space Plasma Cutter will be an instant unlock in Dead Space 2 for anyone with a save file from the first game (regardless if it reached completion status or not). This means those with the required data will be able to roll with the Plasma Cutter in the promising sequel from the get-go.

    No Caption Provided

Any upgrades you've made to the Plasma Cutter during Isaac's first grand space adventure, however, will not make the transition to Dead Space 2. This is probably a good design decision, since it would be hard to build suspense or horror when a player can just bury 600 pumped-up laser pistol bullets into the first dozen or so alien baddies they run across in a game that's supposed to be all about slowly building atmosphere and tension.

Dead Space 2 hits January 25 across the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC and apparently all versions of the game will support this save file bonus.

Fuck I rented this (I think on PS3) back when it came out but deleted the save file. So annoying. Hopefully it'll have that thing like Mass Effect does where it somehow knows you're previous save even if it isn't on your HDD.

It's going to be a weak weapon to start with, and they didn't say that you won't get the plasma cutter at a later point in the game anyway.  Keeping the DS1 save just gets you it at the very beginning.  Doesn't seem like that big of a deal to skip it.

Nice. This reminds me, there was totally an achievement for beating the first game with just the Plasma Cutter. Managed to do it but I hope there's a similar achievement in the sequel.

I'm a little confused.  The Plasma Cutter was the first weapon you got in Dead Space, right?  It's also available in the demo for Dead Space 2.  What the hell is the first weapon going to be in Dead Space 2, then?  The pulse rifle?  It's weird to me that they're making a non-upgraded version of the first game's most basic weapon a special unlock.

Companies should really let you know if saves will be valuable a lot more than a month before the sequel comes out.  I've still got my Dead Space save on my PS3 but there are plenty of games I've rented whose saves I've cleared out.

It's all I rolled with anyway. This however makes me wonder what the first weapon in Dead Space 2 is.

It's probably just a skin, or a very very slightly different version of the weapon.

That plasma cutter is so iconic & simple that I figured it'd be the first thing you get in this sequel. Now it's making me wonder what's there in it's place. Hopefully it'll be something close to the painkiller starting weapon, that would make Dead Space rather interesting.

Well that's good it's going to work for PC too. Albeit it doesn't quite sound like something super awesome since it's the basic weapon from the first game, and if you miss out on it, you're probably not missing much anyway.

If all else you could just borrow a copy from a friend, save a game and there you go. Of course there is no reason to stop playing the first one once you've already started.

I was thinking the same thing.  Why are you people deleting save games?  They generally take up very little room, at least on consoles.  I always just leave 'em there unless they're from a rental that I know I'm never going to buy.

So even if you did delete it, if you still have the game you can just start a new game and save.

When I played the demo for the second one, I thought that WAS the plasma cutter from the first game, since it didn't seem any different. I am curious if the one from the demo is different from the one from the first you get from the save data, or if this is something where I'll get it and think "cool" but never really notice it after that.

Are we sure its the second game's plasma cutter and possibly not just the version we used in the first game?  That's the way I took it.

Haha guys it is not a big deal. If you lost your save just boot the game back up, it just says you need a save, not a complete save. And if you want it for PC now but beat the original on one of the consoles, just download a save, there are tons on the internet.

People need to learn to read.  You don't need to have finished Dead Space, you just need a saved game.  If you lose yours, open up Dead Space and play the first 5 minutes and then save first chance you get.

Does ME2 actually do that?  I beat ME1 and don't have the save file anymore, so knowing that actually makes me a little bit more excited to play it based on the fact that I bought a copy of ME2 off amazon and it was shipped today.

I don't think I want to have it unlocked right away.  The opening sequence of the first game wasn't nearly as tense on new game + when you had weapons with you.  If they're doing something similar in Dead Space 2, I'd hate to have the intro ruined like that.

True, but this time your gonna be asked personally to deal with them. So theres a good chance your gonna be fully prepared before you encounter them again, so you will already have weapons at your disposal.

If we start with weapons anyway I'm all in for my plasma cutter.
If we don't start with weapons I'll probably attempt to pass this offer simply on the fact that I want my tension from the game, having a weapon to start with might nullify that a bit.

It's the skin of the original Plasma Cutter. It's nothing too special unless you like the look of the first better. Probably won't notice it all that much. The first Plasma Cutter looked more like a handgun and had orange things on it. The new Plasma Cutter looks less like a handgun, it only has the hilt and the trigger, and is all gray. It looks more industrial.

Does ME2 actually do that?  I beat ME1 and don't have the save file anymore, so knowing that actually makes me a little bit more excited to play it based on the fact that I bought a copy of ME2 off amazon and it was shipped today. "
Mass Effect 2 looks at your achievements and gives you awards based on that but your choices don't carry over if you have no save game.
