Having been released back in ye olden tymes of February, memory of this game isn't exactly fresh in our minds. Just a heads up that when game of the year category discussions start, we'll even have to consider the wonky but priceless gem that is Deadly Premonition. I can easily see it as a serious contender for best narrative, what do you think?

I don't think so. Maybe it deserves some kind of "Best worst game of 2010" award.

You know what? I would accept best narrative. Except that Mass Effect 2 and HEavy Rain came out this year and actually deserve that award.

So no, I would not accept it as a winner. I would accept it as a nominee.

I tried really, really hard to forget about Deadly Premonition after I played through it THREE TIMES....and I tried even harder to forget that I actually bought it. As much as I enjoyed the games narrative and quirky charm, it really sucked to actually play it.

@SkinnyBlue: Oh god did it suck to play it. I'll sometimes pick it up and try to progress a little further, then not even leave the room that I'm in because the controls graphics and game play are all garbage.

Just had a friend pick it up with no context to the internet sensation of  Deadly Premonition.  He was looking up survival horror for 360 on the internet and had a $20 amazon gift certificate burning a hole in his pocket  combined with a lack  games on his brand new 360 when he found this game. He absolutely loved it. Nothing to do with the ironic hipster thing people had going during the summer.

But if it is a budget title in the region the Game of the Year is being awarded in, surely it would count. We wouldn't exclude titles that were released in Japan the previous year, so why would a title be excluded from another category for a similar reason?

Because if a game was developed with the intent that it be sold for 60 dollars, that game will get a bigger budget than one intended for sale at 25 dollars (hypothetically, its questionable if this is the case with DP). It would therefore be unfair to compare a "true" 25 dollar game with one that was discounted.

EDIT: I should clarify that I completely see the argument from the other side, I'm simply making a point.

@nintendoeats: It depends on whether "budget" is considered to cover games sold at a lower price, or whether it covers games produced for less than usual. Since development costs can vary a lot more than video game selling prices and production budget may not even be known, I imagine it is the former category that's usually considered in a "best budget game" award. It's hard to imagine a full-price game being considered for best budget game, regardless of how much it cost to make. But if it is released at a budget price then it can be considered, regardless of its original price in some other region. We don't know how the developers thought it should sell for. It's probably not up to them to decide.

Deadly Premonition for GOTY?  That's a stretch, but there are things that the game definitely nails despite the flaws in its gameplay.

I haven't played Mass Effect 2, but after watching the Endurance Run for Deadly Premonition and playing Heavy Rain, I have to say that I enjoyed Deadly Premonition's narrative more.  Heavy Rain's narrative has some goofy flaws that threaten to take it down.  Deadly Premonition's narrative can get batshit crazy at times, but the tone of the game is such that even when something bizarre happens, it never feels out of place.

No its not, the only reason most of us got a found feeling towards it is because we watched it being played by the awesome GB crew with all the craziness that those guys can unleash.

If I was to play this game on my own before having watched the ER I would have hated it, even though the story has it's charm the rest of it falls flat, it controls horribly(its one of those games where the challenge comes only from the horrid controls), looks like a early ps2 game, has some very dubious design choices in many occasions(wall ladies anyone?), so all in all it's nowhere near GOTY material, not even close.

Best narrative, best direction, best setting, or best character (Francis York Morgan) for me. As for the game mechanics, they're not nearly as broken as people describe, although they are quite retro.

I played and loved this game while on the front end of the hype snowball and I still wouldn't say that it's worthy of any official commendations. Personal ones, sure, but nothing from any organized media. Yeah, it's a charming peace of work and is the only game I've played this year that's left a real, lasting impression on me, but there is enough objectively wrong with this game to give it any type of award.

Deadly Premonition was luck. Swery got lucky in making a game that was so-bad-it-was-good. I don't think we should award that because it ultimately lowers the bar for games as a whole. Yes the story was great and yes the characters were beyond endearing, but you can't call something "Game of the Year" when the actual game part is not very good.

TBO, I think that ME2's narrative is pretty poor, and falls way behind ME1's one.
It's totally centered in the characters, and their story isn't reallly deep at all. I'd say the game is incredibly cinematographic, but that's about it.  Also, the main plot just sucks. There's little actual story development and it ends in a cheap cliiffhanger.

I really can't think in any game that has a better plot or characters than DP released in 2010.

Starcraft II, Halo: Reach, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, God of War III, Heavy Rain, Alan Wake... these are games that come to mind when I think of GOTY. Seeing Deadly Premonition even nominated alongside such games would just be wrong.

Guilty Pleasure Award, Best-Worst Game Award, whatever you feel like you need to give it. It's not a GOTY contender. Those would have to excel in probably every field, and DP doesn't have the gameplay to stand up to all those other games.

It's worth keeping in mind that GOTY awards typically don't just have a single competition for best game, but a multiplicity of categories. No one is asking that Deadly Premonition be hailed as the best game this year.

It's a shitty-ass game and the only thing going for it is the story, music and hilarious characters. But we have to remember it's GAME of the year, and the "game" part of DP is fucking terrible compared to other games released this year.

@Jack268: All of which are part of the game. Are cutscenes, characterisation, dialogue, and so on something that happens when you're not playing the game? In any case, if you accept what you're saying then the game could be nominated for writing. Done.
@Blair:@Jayzilla: Read the op, it helps. He says for best story not best game overall.

I could see it winning best story or characters. Nothing else though, as much as I loved DP, it was pretty shitty. But, I can't recall any characters as memorable as York or Zack from this year.
