I know that thats not what makes this game so special, but if it had a bigger budget and had those kinds of graphics and controls? Would this actual be a contender for goty, or would it take away that deadly premonition feel?
Deadly Premonition
Game » consists of 11 releases. Released Feb 23, 2010
An open-world action-adventure game following an eccentric FBI agent as he investigates a series of bizarre murders in the small rural town of Greenvale.
What if DP had graphics like heavy rain or alan wake?
I haven't watched videos of the game or anything, but from the screenshots people keep posting of the characters, I don't think it looks bad...
Having cleaner nicer, higher res graphics and texture would definitely be a improvement for the game, i'm sure anybody will agree. The controls and other mechanics would depend on how or what was changed though. A lot of the main character/charm of the game seems to come from the fiction though.
" Wouldn't put it in GOTY range for sure, still a lot of gameplay problems and weirdnesses, but it would be damned impressive. "Yea I guess it wouldn't be in goty, but if they had a bigger budget then I bet those problems would be addressed.

"It doesn't look bad all the time but most of the time its pretty bad and the textures for grass and stuff are pretty bad too. The main character models aren't too bad but their animations aren't so great, I'm guessing in an intentional funny way.
I think that would rip all the charm away and it would just be another crappy game that nobody cares about. Maybe I'm wrong though.

You know, to an extent, I wouldn't mind some graphical improvements, but I also agree that better graphics would probably kill some of the game's charm. I mean, there might be a perfectly normal conversion on, but then one of the characters just does a really out-of-pace gesture that makes you laugh. Plus, I wouldn't want them to "improve" York's smile. Really, some of the "bad" aspects of the graphics are just too perfect for the game as it stands. XD
i re-mapped my controls a bit graphics were tolerable but fix those issues and the music it would be a good game
If the game would be that beautiful it would cost alot of money to make.
Money = Investors = Nay Sayers = Mainstream game. It wouldn't be Deadly Premonition.
Isn't that right, Zach?
" @Diamond said:I don't think that's true, a lot of the problems that game has are just bad design choices." Better graphics would drive development costs and time up and the game would have been full priced. Peoples standards for full priced and budget priced titles are very different. Because Deadly Premonition has a small budget and a bargain price it requires less sales to be a profitable title for the publisher. People talk about Deadly Premonition because it is a quirky budget game that is surprisingly good if it had a full $60 price tag it probably wouldn't have the cult appeal it has today.
i think it would lose its charm, if it had better graphics and controls. There probably wouldn't be an endurance run either.
I don't think the charm comes from the poor visuals. It would be nice if the textures were easier on the eyes but I think better gameplay takes precedence. Plus, like somebody else said, the cost of the game would increase quite a bit. That may or may not have any influence on how you enjoy the game but I think it would put people off if it was full priced game with poor gameplay.
I was actually thinking about this earlier. What if Deadly Premonition had excellent visuals and fantasitc gameplay to complement it's quirky take on Twin Peaks? Would people still care about the game or would it just get lost in the crowd? That's not to say that the things that are wrong with DP are what make the game intriguing (at least to me), but it's something to think about.
It would need to get a complete overhaul gameplay-wise. I think the charm would still be there, though. It'd have the same wonky dialog, the same strange plot and completely off-the-wall characters, so I don't think it would suddenly become generic.
" @RobotHamster said:I like the side quests and rewards, but the combat system seems like crap, as well as the graphics. idk if they'd fix the combat with a bigger budget, since it seems like a design choice, but maybe the graphics would have been better." @Diamond said:I don't think that's true, a lot of the problems that game has are just bad design choices. Gotta agree. Even if it did look ace, it wouldn't mean anything as long as the dungeons are as dull as they are. I still love the game, but imagine Resi 5 graphics with the locations of DP. It would still be lame." @Hourai said:
"It wouldn't be Deadly Premonition without the shitty graphics. "This. "
the graphics while crude aren't really the turn off for me I think if it had better gameplay and controls it would be shit ton better
Would be kinda like polishing a turd.
Half of DP's charm is the fact that everything about the game is a couple of notches below mediocre.
At it's core, it's still a horror game that isn't scary. It doesn't even know what kind of atmospher it's trying to achieve, because it switches tone and style so fast that the drama is moot. The gameplay isn't all that enticing, because if you aren't doing (mostly) boring side missions a la PS2 gen, you're in combat with infinite ammo weapons against shambling zombies that don't bring any tension to gameplay because there is literally nothing to fear. This game has alot more going against it than just graphics.
" @RobotHamster said:I agree with this. Assuming they made everything look better, assuming they got rid of the weird Garry's Mod smiling, made all the lip synching really good, made the character animations less crazy- gave the characters more than two different animations each, and basically fixed all the visual stuff; this'd still be a really awkward game to play.
a lot of the problems that game has are just bad design choices. "
You'd still have waves of the same boring enemy, generic side quests, awful cieling-lady fights, an open world that's pretty much empty, fuckin silly characters (Thomas), a useless map and all that crappy stuff.
I think the main difference would be that more people would be lookin forward to it, and maybe more people would've bought it.
I still like this game by the way.

* Someone says that DP is like the ultimate PS1 game. It´s true. The plain textures are the charm of game. The game has more soul in that way.
I agree with what most people are saying. The shitty aspect is part of what makes it fun. There's a certain masochistic joy that comes from playing it that would be lost with the better graphics.
