Backtracking is the act of navigating through previously explored areas, usually for the purpose of progressing in an objective-based adventure game. Players who are lost may also backtrack to reorient themselves.

The inclusion of a feature that recaps either recent plot events or the events of the entire plot of a game in a reviewable log of some form. It can serve as a useful tool for those that need a reminder on earlier story events or the current objective.
