I picked up the BFG edition today and am incredibly bored. I'm only about 2 hours in, but fighting weak enemies one on one mostly with weapons that have little kick is going tiresome. Does the action or atmosphere pick up as the game progresses?

    Hmmmm. Yes.

But if you're already bored... Will it save you?

Lights off + headphones makes some difference, as it does for all tension games.

I don't think it's an action game, not to the same level as Doom and Doom 2 at least.

I can get that, but it's totally not a horror game. Or at least succeeds in that department if that's what id's intention was.

This version seems way easier than the original doom 3 to be honest. I dunno, I think doom 3 has a certain aesthetic that appeals to some people but not everyone? That I don't know what, you know?

Doom 3 was was pretty tight..until about after 2 hours in. Then it just continually repeats itself for dozen or so hours.

The fact that you're not enjoying yourself throught (arguably) the best part of the game, is worrying. Doom 3 is / was a one trick pony.

Must not be for you man. I personally loved Doom 3. Not bothering with this version though. Call me crazy but the fact that they "sold out" and put in a shoulder flashlight really bums me out. Everyone might of hated it, but having to switch between the flashlight and your weapon is what made this game for me. It really added to the tension and atmosphere in my opinion. Yes, it could be considered dumb that in the future, one should be able to attach a flashlight to his firearm. But, video games.

Yeah unfortunately Doom3 is more of a representation of the time, and it was really more about the tech then it was about solid gameplay.

Doom 3 doesn't really hold up very well. Doom 1 and 2, however are still awesome. If you haven't touched those in a long time I suggest switching over to them since they're bundled with it.

Originally your supposed to be so googly eyed over the graphics it's ok if it's just a meh game. That don't work anymore.

I should also state that I did really like it when it came out but whenever I try to play now I get to the first computer console where my cursor ends up on the screen and stop.

Side not: why the hell is that feature not in every game ever now?

By the back half of the game, it makes a much better attempt at being a balls-out Doom-y shooter. It's never classic Doom, but it's a lot more fun when it picks up the pace. The back half is also full of long-scrapped FPS design decisions, though, so look out for that.

Edit: Also, don't get too excited for the BFG. It's one of the worst BFGs in both Doom and Quake.

Allowing you to use the flashlight and shoot at the same time was a stupid move, it removes any sense of tension that the original had.

So, I never played Doom. None of it. I have seen Breaking Brad though, so help me a bit: Is it possible that Doom is (or was) a highly overrated franchise?

Doom I seems to be loved by most people, I don't know how people feel about Doom 2 but in my opinion the leveldesign looked terrible and most people don't seem to like Doom 3. So....do people even want a Doom 4?

The original Doom games were and still are very great. The weapons are satisfying and the focus on movement makes the game very skillful and engaging. These days, you can also use things like sourceports to add freelook, jumping, particle effects, etc. which makes the games hold up better than they have any right to. Yeah, the level design in Doom 2 can be super fucking crazy at times, but Doom 1 had awesome level design.

Doom 3, although I started enjoying it AFTER A POINT, was really a step in the wrong direction for the franchise. I think that's something even defenders of the game recognize. I don't think anyone wants a "Doom 3: 2", but a real sequel that captures what makes the originals still awesome.

But that will never happen with the climate pervading the gaming industry at this point.

Yeah I had the same experience, I liked the slow build up, the horror aspect and I always liked Sci-fi-horror, but than it got irritating and not as enjoyable, as it was pretty much a one trick pony, also don't like enemies teleporting in.

its a dated shooter. personally i liked shooters back then and not big on them now so its a plus for me. the higher difficulty definitely does add a lot more tension

As a ps3 player i mainly got it for the first 2 doom games though

    One word: Chainsaw

Though that's only fun for a few hours and you've still got 10ish hours left to go; everything is pitch black the whole way. Butcher Bay is a much better Doom 3 type game than Doom 3 (which is not to say Doom 3 is worthy of being called Doom in the first place).

Most of the attraction of Doom 3 was the horror aspect, if that does not grab you the experience will not necessarily work.

I'm not sure I would call the mechanics dated, the shooting feels good and your not following the ^ symbol. Nor do you have regenerating health. So its only dated in the sense of not respecting the post CoD 4 conventions.

None of that changes how incredible Doom 1 is and how much it impacted the industry. And Doom 2 was still really cool, it just didn't excite people as much as the original.

doom 3 was always more of a horror game than an action shooter imo . and i had some good tense times with it when it came out. its like any other horror game, if you dont want to be scared and you dont set up the atmosphere and play it at the right moments you will get nothing out of it. so your non enjoyment of it is probably just because of your lazyness or lack of thought put into how youve been playing.

I never played Doom 3 but from watching stream for a good hour, thinking about when this was released and what the game looks like now. It looks like more of a reaction to half life than a sequel to Doom II. Am I crazy? I'm really looking forward to picking this up when its on a steam sale.

Didn't you play Doom 3 when it came out? Man, did Bethesda get you good. Ha ! Ha !

Getting people to rebuy a 8 year old bad game is an incredible feat at $40, and they probably aren't too unhappy about it.

Man, when do twitch shooters like Doom, Quake, and UT get to have their comeback to popularity? I'm totally ready for it.

There are only three scenarios I can come up with in which they could bring back fast paced AAA shooters in the next few years:
