14 years and its gone nowhere
(Before I review this game I would like to say that I did not finish it and this is why)
About 14 years ago the fine men and women at 3D realms were working on a game called Duke Nukem: Forever. However they eventually went bankrupt and thus gearbox picks up the dukes name and vows to complete the title that everyone has been waiting for. The long in development game is out and here is what I thought about it.
Il start with what I noticed first in Duke Nukem, the horrible horrible load times. The load times for this game are some of the worst I have ever experienced. A lot of them took so long to load that I ended up doing something else between each screen. I wouldn’t have such a big problem with it if it was just in-between missions but each of these load screens comes up every time you die. Throughout the game I became less worried about progressing and more worried about just staying alive so I didn’t have to go through one of them again. All these load screens interrupted the flow of what little story this game had.
The Duke franchise has a long history of dick jokes and other potty humor that make it enjoyable. However in this game it seems as if instead of once and a while giving you a reference or a funny sex joke they are just throwing that shit at you every time there is another character in a mission, even the pedestrians. I do like some of these jokes but a lot of the time it feels like they thought of something that has to do with sex or kicking ass regardless of if its funny or not just throw it at you.
As far as the missions go there is a lot of repetitiveness. I find myself in a lot of situations were I’m shrunken crawling through a kitchen doing some crappy first person platform. Even in the parts were you weren’t shrunken none of the game play really felt unique. To add on to that the game play felt very aged which makes sense considering when it begun development.
The one thing that was not the worst in this game was the multiplayer. A lot of the guns were cool and they made it fun to play. Some of the game modes were had a nice Duke twist to them that I liked. In particular the game mode capture the flag. The small twists made it stand out from other modes in the game. Sadly these modes don't make the game worth buying.
All in all Duke Nukem: Forever is a disappointing game that is should’ve been released a while ago. Duke earns a 1 out of 5.
