After his junior year, hired a new coach, Steve Spurrier. Emmitt decided to forgo his senior season and enter the 1990 NFL Draft. He was drafted in the first round as the 17 overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys. In his second through twelfth years, all with the Dallas Cowboys, Smith amassed over 1,000 yards rushing in a season.
