One of my favorite things to do is put on an album of a band I'm just discovering, or one that I already know I love, and zone out to a simple game. Sometimes I also use great movie soundtracks like Oblivion or Braveheart.

I find small games that have good hooks work really well, such as puzzle games and roguelikes. Simple narratives are okay, but deep narratives detract from the listening to music part. And of course if the in-game music is vital to the gameplay (such as Crypt of the NecroDancer) then I can't listen to my own soundtracks.

Here's some of the ones I've done in the past:

I'd like to find others, so I am hoping for some suggestions from you guys.

Spelunky, Halo 5, and racing games are usually pretty good for background music, podcasts, or GB videos.

Puzzle games are usually solid, dating back to Tetris (and my current one is just Jewels, the MH Games version on phones).

Anything where you are just grinding and not advancing story is great for this. I cruised around for soldiers and resources in MGSV while listening to podcasts.

Beat Hazard is the obvious answer here. Not only do you listen to the music you want, it integrates in the game you play.

Hearthstone also works well with background music. Alternative way of looking at things, Sound Shapes is a really good game with its own music.

Open world games if you want to do the side-quests. I did this a lot in MGSV.

Rocket League is definitely my go-to game for this sort of thing. It used to be FIFA though, but since Rocket League came out, I've barely touched that.

Devil Daggers, Tree of Savior, and that new SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Classics. I usually throw on a podcast and go nuts.

Trackmania, racing games in general.

Definitely have spent a couple hours at a time recently listening to music and making tracks in Trackmania Turbo.

Binding of Isaac is great for this. Pretty much any loot-grinding game, too.

The Skate series. The in-game licensed soundtracks are nice while I do tune into more of my own stuff.

Listening to a Bombcast or music from my list while trying to do a nice grind from a railing multiple times is cool.

My favorite for this is Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Other games I do this with include Civ V, Minecraft, and any RPG where I need to do some grinding (a good Final Fantasy or Pokemon work well for these, in my opinion, as long as you stick to grinding while listening and stop the music before continuing on with any story bits.)

Stellaris is quickly becoming such a game. Sure, the music in it is fine but once I've heard it all it stops mattering.

I've been playing Pokemon Omega Ruby on the 3ds and have found that it is a fantastic excuse to bump music in the background while playing the relatively mindless game. I've cought up on over a hundred hours of new albums while finalizing the pokedex these past few months.

Puzzle Quest and music used to just completely relax me. Could easily lose an hour or two playing Puzzle Quest and listening to an album or two.

More current stuff I like to listen to music to: Street Fighter V, Enter the Gungeon, FFVII PS4 version.

I also have games I listen to podcasts with, those are stuff like Borderlands, Witcher, RPGs where you spend more time without much stuff happening. Prefer music on the more fast paced games, FFVII is the exception I guess, and podcasts for the stuff which is more mellow.

Stardew Valley. It's own soundtrack rocks but it's the perfect music/podcast game

All Fifa games since Fifa 11 have the best music soundtracks.

I do like to listen to music and podcasts while gaming.

When I like to zone out I boot up Rocket League, Stardew or even Dark Souls. Games like Diablo, Marvel Super Heroes and the likes are also great.

I basically did all of the side quests in AC: Syndicate while listening to all of the GOTY 2015 Bombcasts during Christmas break. It was glorious.

Aside from MMOs which are the most obvious answer, Diablo 3 was probably the last big game that I did this with.

  • Leveling pretty much any MMORPG
  • Binding of Issac
  • Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe
  • Just Cause 2
  • Garry's Mod
  • Minecraft

If I listen to podcasts or even just music, these are the games I like to play. Anything that's pretty mindless is great for it.
