The problem for me, in many cases with Patrick, is how he inserts his own opinions as fact in his articles. The thing about #1reasonwhy and all the other articles that have bothered me is his refusal to take himself out of the story and present the facts as they are. He has some inherent need to colour the story to better fit his world view, and it's just gross.

Giant Bomb is a site built on personality. The individual staff members let their personae leak into their reviews, quick looks, etc. If you don't like someone talking about themselves, this site isn't for you.

All this does is show how much of a joke gaming "journalism" is. Keep this stuff on Kotaku where it belongs. Let's talk about games not poorly made statues or the fact you think people getting paid to show of their body is degrading when it's not your body to begin with. All this stuff does is paint things in a bad light all around.

Although I do seriously find it funny that a man is trying to tell women exactly how they should feel on certain things, especially concerning their own bodies, quite funny.

@sissylion:

Yes for video games. Not badly shoehorned VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY IS SEXIST! stories that are only there to draw hits. You know, when the industry isn't sexist. And more and more women are getting into the industry, being leads on games and so on.

I still don't understand why there hasn't been an outcry of sexism towards men in video games. The extremely implausible male characters. Suave, well built, charming and a do everything man. Why arn't there more overweight male lead characters? Ugly male lead characters? Why are a majority of male lead characters psychotic killers murdering thousands of people and can just casually talk like they have an On/Off switch. I find that offensive since I'm an overweight and unattractive male. Ah, who am I kidding. I don't care, it's a video game. Bang bang.

@Mustachio: I come from a place where we hate video games.

I'm honestly really not looking forward to the article. I'm fucking tired of it. I'm tired of the bullshit feminist movement in the industry. There's noting sexist about a bloody gory statue. Are you really saying they tried to make it sexy and exploitative? This is the reaction that comes from the same people that think a women resisting and avoiding rape in a video game is a fucking sexist fucking thing. God damn it, you can't even make a fucking powerful women who actually is capable of taking care of herself without being fucking sexist? ITS A FUCKIN' BEACH RESORT, WITH ZOMBIES. OF COURSE THERE ARE BIKINI ZOMBIES. IT'S ALL ANYONE BLOODY WEARS AT THOSE PLACES.

Agh. Can we all please just grow up and not buy dumb things we don't like? Can we please just deal with our own problems instead of playing the victim and expecting the other sex to fix things for you? Fuck, you think I like being told that because I'm a man, all I care about are tits and submissive women, or that I don't listen, and don't actually give a fuck about my significant others? Or the millions of stereotypes in society that just make the average modern male to be a total retard? No, that stuff is stupid. But I don't let it define me or so much as touch me.

You want to say booth babes are gross? Go right ahead. I agree! In fact, I think most guys do, despite what the feminists will tell you about how we all just want to jerk off on the worlds largest pair of breasts while being told how big our cocks are 24 fuckin' 7. But you know what? Those women agree to do what they do. Some of em probably even enjoy it. The same thing goes for pornography. Sure, there is exploitation, with young girls who need money just being used for profit, but then you have people like Stoya, who are capable of actual intelligent thought, who manage to be a feminist without being a total raving lunatic, and who aren't afraid to enjoy being something that other "feminists" shit on constantly. Because no one has the right to do what they wanna do, unless it's ok with the crazy frizzy haired cat lady or the 23 year old hipster out to prove the world wrong who thinks so much as the mention of half of the word "rape" is mankind collectively forcing their dicks on the whole of womankind.

But you know, you're right. I really could go for a nice, sexy, rotten, bloody, limbless, headless torso right about now.

Everyone has problems, everyone faces fuckin' obstacles in life. I'm a gay guy trying to get not only into the Marine Corps, but who wants to be a grunt and eventually make Recon. And I don't see that as an opportunity for me to bitch about how I'll be hazed even more than most if I let out my sexual orientation when I get to my first unit, I see it as something in my way that I have to get past. And fuckin' A, I'm looking forward to it, because hell, every obstacle I get over is just another step in the stairway to greatness. I'm not a fuckin' victim, I'm just another person with another hardship ahead of them. Like every other motherfucker on this planet. For some people, it's school being difficult for their given field. For others, it's a physical condition or injury. Or perhaps the loss of a loved one. Or any number of things. Letting those things define you and turn you into the kind of person that, instead of attacking your problems head on, blames everyone else for it and then expects them to "stop" so things get better for you can only hinder your experience of life. Who gives a flying fuck if some dumb 13 year old kid likes tits. You oogle at shirtless guys in Miami, so who really gives a fuck?

I'm just a little tired of all the poor little babies acting like fucking victims. I don't care what your fucking sex or race or creed is, stop being a whiny little brat and grow up. Live your own damn life. When your freedoms are intruded upon, defend them. Hell, defend the freedoms of others. Bust stop giving a rats ass about stupid shit like a fucking slab of plastic in the shape of a zombie. Or, bits of a zombie, anyway.

Also, if another person who hasn't so much as been touched funny starts bitching about "rape culture" I'm going to have the girls I know who were ACTUALLY ABUSED come smack the stupid right out of them. How dare we have games in which women don't get raped, but it's totally okay to abuse the term just to make your agenda sound like it's up against some shocking, horrible thing! You want rape culture? Watch Game of Thrones. That's rape culture. Girls in tiny skirts? That's not fucking rape culture you ungrateful little welps.

and there's my rant, because I'm tired of dealing with/getting shit from people blaming me for something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH ME.

Also, isn't it a bit funny that an article about sexism has a title that is a play on a porno that has women doing some pretty unpleasant things?

I was going to say something slightly snarky, but I'm just going to avoid this whole thing. It's depressing on both sides. On one hand, Patrick's putting his opinion out there as fact, which is annoying. "Booth babes are nothing but exploited women who can't take care of themselves." "Cyberpunk 2077 is disgusting." This shitty Dead Island thing has already been blown out of proportion. Honestly, I saw this thread title and thought it was parody. On the other hand, some of the community's reaction is just awful. Nope, not touching this with a ten foot poll.

How is he putting his opinion out as fact? It's an editorial, he gives his opinion on it like anyone else would. Giant Bomb was never about just reporting the news. It's a personality driven site so obviously the articles are going to be personality driven as well.

He's making definitive statements. An opinion should be stated as such: "I think that ponies are evil, in the way that Hitler was evil." Not "Ponies are evil, in the way that Hitler was evil."

The idea behind this basically being that it is disrespectful and arrogant to just make blanket statements about something just because of how you feel about something. I think the part where it really catches here is that Patrick is speaking as a professional individual paid to process this information. To then turn around and just make a statement like that comes off a wee bit arrogant. Doesn't normally bother me, but at the same time, it wouldn't kill him to be a little less absolute with the way he expresses his perspective.

looking forward to all of the woman haters of giant bomb coming together and yelling at patrick like idiots

Looking forward to all the people who think that if someone disagrees with a female or has anything negative to say whatsoever, they must be a "woman hater", because they are oh such precious and delicate fragile creatures and if they so much as breath loudly in response to one's comments, they're are going to obliterate her feelings like a nuclear warhead and are probably a serial rapist hiding in their mom's basement that has never touched a boob!

Also, I'll get it out of the way: Just because Patrick and other "journalists" lost their shit over the stupid statue (and it was incredibly stupid and repulsive) doesn't mean that the whole "this was designed by insensitive men who want to motivate other human beings to rape women and treat them like crap!". The idea that anyone actually sat there and said "it's a pair of tits with no body that is all shredded -- that's so sexy!" is absurd and anyone suggesting that is the mindset it was created with is being disingenuous. And, finally, fuck people who think there is anything wrong with objectifying someone. As I stated in another comment recently, human beings are complex creatures -- capable of treating a woman they're going on a date with respectfully and with great and sincere interest. Capable of treating their mother, sister, and most women they meat with kindness and decency. And also capable of disagreeing with or arguing with women about things. And, believe it or not, all of those things are still possible while occasionally objectifying them. You know, like how I might fantasize about how I'd bang the hell out of Scarlet Johanson because she's got a fucking awesome body. That doesn't make one a woman hater or a rapist or a neanderthal anymore than being a narrow-minded, single-dimensional, intentionally obtuse journalist or commentator that sees ABSOLUTELY EVERY DEPICTION OF WOMEN THAT ISN'T SAINTLY as an affront to all humankind and representative of only the most depraved male minds does. (And no, this isn't to say there aren't serious issues of gender and discrimination to talk about, but then let's talk about that instead of this trivial shit).

So, in short, I have to say that this topic is rather insincere and continuing to beat the dead horse (or zombie-bait corpse) further is just pathetic. It is truly making a mountain out of a mole-hill and it's the kind of thing I'd expect from other link-bait sites. It also continues to prove my point that "serious game journalists" are one-trick ponies who know ONLY one story to trot out when they want to be "totes serious" and have something for the resume to show off as "real journalism". And that's "oh, men are such vile pigs and sexism sexism sexism incorrect usage of misogyny but going to use it anyway, because it sounds really smart and makes my article seem totally high-brow and sympathetic".

I don't see how the rest of the world isn't suffocating from the massive puddles of insincerity oozing out of all of this, each time (and "each time" is becoming more frequent, because you can't go 48 fucking hours without more of it in the past year). These "game journalists" use this topic and exploit it and blow it out of all possible sensible proportion in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY we all bitch about the rest of the media and politicians doing about games, in general. It's the same fucking playbook. It's the same fucking insincerity and manipulation. Instead of calling people out on it, we sit around with our dicks in our hands, grunting about how everyone else is a troglodyte for every even thinking of a woman sexually and a handful of angry children spit out some hideous stuff about women, because that's what gets attention when you're ten years old. We should all be a shamed for participating in this bullshit every time patrick or some other "game journalists" trots out the same tired and trite "it's time for some GAMES JOURNALISM DAWG!" bullshit.

And since someone is going to call me on this, let me just ask -- where are the meaningful gaming journalism articles here about racism, homophobia, xenophobia, and even ageism? Where? Show me? And for that one that you can pull up as evidence, how many were there about sexism? And of those about "sexism" how many of those were actually discriminatory? How many of them were anything more than the general day to day use of female characters or advertising that we are bombarded with in absolutely every other aspect of modern society every single day of the year? (Meaning that it is not inherently different or worse or more sickening or wrong than everything else you consume or participate in every single day, so stop acting like we have some sort of an unusual epidemic of neanderthals beating women over the head and dragging them into the cave, in gaming).

Holy shit, thank you for writing this. You summed up my feelings way better than I could have articulated. I particularly agree with the parts bolded and underlined.

I am only curious of what does 8 women thought of the line "it is different because it is a woman" which was in my opinion more sexist than the whole statue.

The definition of insanity is doing the exact same fucking thing over and over again expecting shit to change.

By that definition a lot of GB members are batshit crazy. Stop arguing damn it, you're wasting time you could use to play video games.

As much as I agree with you about the unlikelihood of Patrick coming off his various stances on various topics, I realize that an argument or a debate in public has merit beyond the person you are speaking to. Even in an active community, for every person who gets involved in the argument, there are 10 who merely watch and form their opinion silently. And that's why it's important to argue with solid logic, real conviction, and an avoidance of fallacies like personal attacks, absurd reductivism and red herrings. Because though you may not effectively inform or change the mind of the person you are speaking to, there is a tenfold audience whenever you speak. Even if they choose not to involve themselves, even if the grand total of their involvement is silence or merely ' ^this ', by involving yourself and speaking logically and articulately, you can consider that you have done something to improve the standard of discourse and thought.

if you don't recognise there's a serious fucking problem in gaming culture and actually just about fucking everywhere in general with the objectification of women then i don't even know. "making a mountain of a molehill" is garbage, you literally just don't want to analyse your own privilege and prejudices in any way.

Didn't they already apologize for the statue? Is it necessary to bash them any further?

You know, I once worked as a male nurse...the stuff women say about men and about sex...you'd be shocked that women can be as sexist as men. In fact, I study in a 60-80% female dominated environment and I think being sexist might be in our nature. Being negatively/overtly sexist is bad thing, but being 0% sexist is impossible.

How many of you went out on a date and payed the bill? That's a sexist common belief that all men should pay up. How many of you said to you GF or wife that she shouldn't cook but you yourself should? In the hospital, wouldn't you find a male nurse odd? Common (mis)conception that only women are good nurses. The fact I need to add the "male" prefix proves it. The point is, I know that sexism is an issue in a lot of areas. But I don't uite see how the statue is sexist for using normal female anatomy.

I mean...we've come to a point that a portrayal of perfectly normal female organ is being sexist. Is it the size? Any lactating woman has a bigger size of breasts than that statue. Is it the bikini? I suppose women like wearing bikinis on sunny places (hint: Dead ISLAND) Is it the disembodiment? You can say it's vulgar...but how many of you would have called it sexist if it was a male body? Is the marketing sexist for no having a male disembodied torso? Probably yes.
