I recently went and built myself a new PC (mostly with my close friend's help) and have decided to go and try out some PC games I never tried to see what I've been missing out on.
Anyone have any recommendations for places to start? I've already gotten:

  • All the Humble Indie Bundle games (I'd bought them before)
  • All of Valve's releases
  • The original Deus Ex
  • Dragon Age Origins (again)
  • GTA: San Andreas
  • Just Cause 2
  • Mafia 2
  • Magicka
  • Oblivion
  • Poker Night at the Inventory
  • KotOR
  • Fallout 3 and New Vegas (both again)
  • GTA IV
  • StarCraft II
  • Dragon Age 2
  • Oblivion
  • The Witcher 2
...and some more that I can't quite remember.

Also my PC specs are:
  • An Intel 4300 dual core (overclocked to 2.5 GHz)
  • An ATI 5770
  • An ASUS P5KPL-AM SE
  • 4 Gigs of RAM
  • 1 TB of space

Well there's about a million games I know I love, but based on what you bought, you might like The Witcher 2.

One of the unique things about the PC platform is strategy gaming, not sure if you're into that but I suggest you give it a try. You might like it.

Games like Civilization V, Shogun 2: Total War, Dawn of War II: Retribution, and Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor are all available on Steam (which I am assuming is the platform you're using) and are great games in their own ways.

Uh, this question is always weird. What are you looking to play?

Anyway, some good 'system testing' games that haven't already been mentioned:

Crysis
Far Cry 2
Metro 2033

You're specs are fine, you are at the standard for what pc games can be played. Listen to Jimbo and Giantstalker, also I recommend VVVVVV, the valve catalog, and GoG.com.

Classics are always nice.

@Seedofpower: Glad to see VVVVVV get a nod so early.

I'd recommend Painkiller also, it's not a technical marvel. But if happen to enjoy shooting dudes in the face, then few games do that better than Painkiller.

Wow, it's good to see such great taste on GB.com. Painkiller is probably one of my favorite FPS's of all time (just the original, mind you). It's also probably dirt cheap at this point.

Yeah go visit GoC.com , tryout the original fallout games they are awesome just like Fallout 3 and New Vegas (older fans will tell you they are the only way to play them , regardless they are good) if you like old school FPS you could get the ID software bundle on Steam. EYE Divine Cybermancy is a nice game too

Sounds like you've gotten off to a good start. Play what you've already acquired and then worry about getting more. I have friends who have jumped into a system that has a large, established library, whether it's the PC, PS3, or 360, and immediately bought a ton of games in the excitement. Most of them are still in shrink wrap because my friends couldn't keep up with new stuff and the huge backlog they put on themselves from the start. They all regretted it later. Steam will be there ready to supply you with your next fix when you need it.

Fixed? But yeah fallout, dungeon keeper 1 & 2 (if you like it), Buldar's Gate 1 (but get the mod that makes it play like 2) & 2.

World in Conflict, probably the most underrated RTS to date, hiding in Company of Hero's shadow.

Yo Appleton, wanted to give you a shout out from you neighbor to the north, Green Bay. (Home to the World Champion Green Bay Packers)
But if you just want to try out some games for free in a legit way, I would have to recomend Age of Empires Online and League of Legends. Both free to play, both satisfying their respective genres.
Rock on man and nice build.

I think "PC Gamer" is a fine title. Or do you want something more impressive, lie "Sir PC Gamer" or "Your Royal Heiness, PC Gamer"?

If you like semi-turn-based RPGs then Drakensang: The River of Time is pretty good.  If you like turned based strategy RPG hybrids then King's Bounty: Armored Princess is good.  Of course Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War II series.  I liked Zeno Clash because it was just weird.  The Witcher 2.  The Witcher.  Terraria or Minecraft if that's your thing.  I personally like the STALKER series but it's not for everyone.

@applet0n: If you have a good intenet connection, try Onlive. I bought Alpha Protocol, AC:II, AC:Brotherhood, Red Faction Armageddeon, Mafia 2 and Darksiders all for about $10 each (actually, I got Darksiders and Mafia 2 for free). The client works great for me (in Hawaii even...just about as far from the servers as you can get!) . Wait for thier sales, plus every Friday they sell a game for $5.

Also download the Steam client and keep an eye open for sales. Steam has some great sales too.
