In my Film class our next project is to do a mockumentary on whatever we choose and I was thinking it would be a really great idea to do a mockumentary on either one or several Video Game Has Beens.
This struck me as a pretty cool idea to get people talking about so I decided to bring that idea into the forums and share some of our favourite characters that (sometimes sadly) haven't made it.
So far my list consists of:
- Duke Nukem (we were planning to bring him in showing what he's been doing since his last game, and the stress of his newest game being cancelled so many times, and then triumphantly becoming a "somebody" again on the news of his game finally being finished)
- The Contra Bros
- Gex
- Master Haggins
and that's about it.
Who's your favourite video game has been?
Edit: It also doesn't hurt that my film teacher's favourite video game is Duke Nukem 3D haha
Video Game Has Beens
Sonic is an obvious one though not my favourite. Trying to be loved again and no matter how hard he tries he always fails. Colors seemed like his chance but at that point he shit on so many peoples dreams that no-one cared or blew it off anyway.
Who was that Crocodile on that PS1 game? I don't remember much of him.
I want to sleep.
Rather than "Video Game Has Beens" you could go with a "Where Are They Now" but video game versions. Totally do it up like one of those teen celebrity where are they now's... where 70% of them have already been in jail, prison, or substance abuse counseling (or all of the above).
As for Has Beens though.... someone the other day brought up Double Dragon. There ya go.
" I'd say Sonic is a big time has been "No, its too obvious. Besides, Sonic along with Mario has been done to death.
I was going to suggest Bubsy the Bobcat, but thats pretty obvious as well.

and Double Dragon is one we're contemplating.
Conker dude, conker would be a fun one to mention. It looks like Rare spend like... 10 years trying to craft a new mascot other than Banjo, couldn't decide what demographic he's suppose to be a part of and had wildly differing games.
Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, hell any 90s platformer mascot, there's only like two that made it successfully into this generation.
As The Onion kindly reminded readers recently, Crash Bandicoot recently celebrated his 14th anniversary, but nobody really cared.
" Alex Kidd. He was to be the mascot of SEGA, till Sonic came along. And Commander Keen, of course. For a guy who had... like seven games, he has pretty much disappeared from the gaming world. "If they made a modern Commander Keen, it would be a Wii game, so its for the best. Gameroom need to get Keen games...
Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the dragon. Done. The two PS1 "mascots" are now franchises literally no one cares about. Weird how that happens.

" @HandsomeDead said:Now!!!!!!!" Gex is a never was. "YOU TAKE THAT BACK!
Crash seems to be the ultimate has-been, but Pitfall Harry is a close second.
" Crash seems to be the ultimate has-been, but Pitfall Harry is a close second. "Hey man, anybody in a game with as BUMPING of music as Pitfall II could never deserve to be deemed a has-been. Sure, that reboot they tried doing last generation might have been kinda sorta a flop, but still. That dude's nobility and does not deserve to have his honor besmirched.
Damn right! That was one of my favorite games growing up. It's probably weird that that was the case, but I accept the weirdness." Cool Spot. Just kidding. He is and always will be totally relevant and awesome. "
The dudes from Bad Dudes are totally has-beens. (maybe that's too close to Contra)

Bill and Lance haven't gone away completely. Contra 4 was only a few years ago, and there was also Shattered Soldier on the PS2. Plus, although they aren't in it directly maybe they'll get a cameo appearance in Hard Corps: Uprising."The Contra Bros"
Isn't this sort of the background for Matt Hazard? You should check that out there may be something you could use.
I saw Bubsy on the off ramp that said "Will platform for Catnip" and on my way to work Q*Bert offered me something called a Q*Job for $5.
" @SethPhotopoulos said:I will always love this wonderful game. Excellent soundtrack as well. Such a shame they couldn't continue this very well. Heard the sequel was not as good but I am unsure of the actual perception of said sequel." Sonic is an obvious one though not my favourite.
