I know i'm not as active as I was a year ago (I finally got a life), but I still look in almost every day.
i've seen a sudden surge of spammers/trolls lately.
I see people who haven't even been a member for 6 months have over 1500 posts. I see people intentionally post nonsense.

I mean we used to have people do this kind of bullcrap maybe once a week. Now it happens multiple times per day.

I would like to make a suggestion, mostly directed toward the people who joined in the past few months, since they haven't had to deal with it as much. Stop posting in bullshit threads.---- Here i'll make it a title in case you don't read this:

Stop posting in bullshit threads.

Don't give them the attention they're craving. Just flag it and let it die. Each time you post in their topics, you just bring it back up to the top for more people to read.

I mean it's getting really annoying. A few 13 year old kids come here and post a bunch of bullcrap that they know will piss us off and make us want to discuss it... Don't do it, just ignore it and flag it so a moderator can handle it. I know how bad you want to go in that topic and scream-type at that person, but all that does is make them do it again and again.

So please, can we show a little maturity? I saw one of them being bumped for 30 minutes. People went into the topic, and typed "Tube-Spam" or "Inb4lock". That's exactly what you shouldn't do. Flag it and leave it. Don't bump it.

Unlike most people, if I disagree with a thread I try not argue. I just, with all my might, try to put my cursor over the back button and move to another thread.

Most people like to be smart-asses on this site, which is putting a real damper on my GB experiences. It kind of makes me want to find another site, just for the forums. I've been looking. Hmph, this community is about as bad as Gamespot, just with different kinds of people. I mean, nobody is allowed to share an opinion or say something negative against a post for a popular game, nooooooo, that would be trolling. Pfft.

It happens to every site. As the community grows and gets bigger, it's bound to attract some unwanted members.

i know what you mean. this community does have it's share of idiots. I wouldn't blame you for leaving, as others have left (and I, myself almost did) because of the community sometimes. It's the internet, though. you have to expect people to act like idiots.

Quoting people without providing anything or next to anything else annoys me.  Responses like "cool" for a reason that I perceive as a post count builder do too.  What Sunny did or whomever he means (OP) doesn't necessarily bother me.

@Commando:

I also think that a good deal of the people who troll are older than 13, because some of them are pretty good.  It's probably the 13 year-olds that they are trolling.

The problem is more and more users are gonna come on here and see how far they can push the limits.  Make threads designed to cause arguments over and over, make nonsense threads to see how much can sneak under the mod radar, spam threads with trolling attacks, personal attacks will get more and more nasty.  That is unless the mods generally tighten the rules.

I'm kind of amazed at the nastyness I've seen in some threads recently, there are threads I flagged days ago that are nothing but trouble but they still aren't locked.  Threads with no purpose but for users to attack each other and for this community to go to shit.

There's a lot of people that don't give a shit about the community, or intentionally mean to destroy it, but there's noone here protecting it 90% of the time!

I don't think GB is under attack, maybe it's just that 2% of people are twats. If the user base grows you'll have more people but also more twats.

I agree about "Inb4lock" type stuff.  If you are not a mod, why say it?  It is redundant.  Not all threads "you" dislike are unworthy, just because"you" don't like the subject  matter.

Sometimes it is appropriate to make a counter or personal view point, but that should be, "your topic is stupid and you are a moron".  That doesn't add value at all.

If you dont make it very clear to someone that they are a moron for posting something, they arent going to stop posting stupid ass threads. As it was in the beggining for the gb forums. As soon as the modding started to come, there were more idiots than ever posting stupid ass threads.

I'd put it at at least 30-40%

But seriously its simple and its been stated but I will say it again because Im here anyway,

People in general are assholes and people can anonymously be assholes on the internet.

I'm trying to make a habit of flagging threads that I know are spam... it's better than fueling the fire.

It's just part of the cycle of any online community, and sadly it only gets worse from here. Every community starts out small with a few like minded and well behaved people but over time, and through word of mouth, the site gains popularity and with popularity comes the assholes of the world. If your lucky the site will attract more mature people then immature and even it out for awhile so it doesn't seem as bad, but its only a matter of time until giantbomb becomes like gametrailers.com and 1up.com. A hate filled wasteland full of nothing but 10 year olds calling each other fags, n00bs, and fanboys no matter what the conversation is about.

I have already noticed giantbomb starting to head down this way in the video comments, and slowly the boards have started to get more and more so like this to the point where for the most part i just stopped reading and replying on this site. I just watch the videos and listen to the bombcast and stopped taking part in the community unless it is some snappy one-liner here and there, because its just not worth the effort anymore. Maybe it is because of the lack of things like the endurance run that made me feel as if i had found this secret website that only a few people knew about and that made it feel like something special amongst a sea of generic corperate websites that are only out their to make money for a company, but the site just doesn't feel like a place i want to call home anymore.

I know its not as bad as that made it out to be but its just my personal preference, and i have seen the seeds of this kind of thing becoming more common place over the last few months and i just want out before it gets too noticeably bad and have it potentially ruin my enjoyment of the rest of the site. I'm glad the giantbomb crew is getting more popular because it means they will be able to keep doing what it is they are doing and that they will start to get the recognition they deserved to be getting for all the work they have done. It just makes me sad that it has to come at the price of losing the community that i have loved and have had so many great discussions with over the last year or so, and that i need to find another place to call home. Until the cycle repeats itself once more.

I understand the desire to do it, I really do.  It may work fine if the idiot gives up goes away, but some idiots enjoy the shitstorm it causes and do it again and again (until they get bored and move on).

This is true. You cant realistically expect it not to exist. Just be thankful its not nearly as bad as most other game website forums.

If it really bugs you you could go to 1up or destructoid and join in the circle jerk of telling people how smart you are.

Yeah, I was here for that mess.

But, I dunno.  The more popular a website becomes, the more of these people there will be.  Especially with a website laid out like this, where number of posts is displayed right next to the user name, there are bound to be more people posting to boost their "stats".  And, with the in-flux of people, there will be more douche bags that post pornographic images or nonsense conspiracy theories or idiotic rants or try to incite flaming wars by calling particular consoles "stupid".

I'm sorry but what ADTR_ZERO said is hypocritical, elitist, and pisses me off more than a typical troll.

Such snarky "People here suck and I'm looking elsewhere for forums. Hmph." comments do nothing to help the issue and only show me that such a person is an entirely different kind of asshole.

Provide some solutions, ignore the trolls, stop being so selfish and making stupid comments that perpetuate hate.

There are a lot of wonderful people here who enjoy sharing opinions and listening to others'. If you're so obsessed with the negative that you can't see them, then that is your loss and I wish you well in finding people you enjoy talking to at another forum, but leave the "this place sucks, I'm looking else where, hmph" comments to yourself or at least for your "so long GB, I'm out" post.

GB has been "under attack" for many moons. I think the problem comes from the fact that a lot of new users don't take the time to read the rules of this web site and go straight to posting threads and behaving in the same disrespectful manner that they do on other web sites. Sometimes it's old banned users coming back for another round but usually the mods are on that. However, I have seen a growing trend from old users (mainly ones that are just a couple of months old)  that is getting on my nerves. If a new user comes in and does something that is not accepted or to their standards (like posting a link without hyperlinking it or no embedding a video) then instead of teaching them them how to do it or how things work here hey just go on berating the user and making them feel like shit and in turn making them into douches as well. I guess it's easier being a jackass then actually taking the time teaching them.

I do agree that giant bomb has a lot of great people, and if you treat them correctly, you'll see that they aren't even bad people. the trolls can be easily avoided just by a flag. that's what i've learned, anyway.

And you, my friend, have WAY less faith in humanity than me. I would say around 10%, it's just the fact that the trolls are the ones we remember.

It's part of the aches and pains of a growing site.  If you think it's bad here try going to 1up.  Lately I've see adverspam in just about every comment section and everytime something is flagged as innapropriate five more pop up in its place.  All the large sites deal with it.  It's up to the mods to keep it clean.

@crusader8463: There are some sites that have gone through this process and need only a few like minded people to drive away the remaining crap as well, such as the Gamespy community. As you've said, it's part of the whole cycle of an online community; trolls will go where the people are. That said, however, what makes a community as a whole survive the long-run is how the community as a whole handle the trolls as well as how the mods react. Being nomadic with where you post does not make for a great community and just means that no matter where you end up, you will know you won't be there long.

This may not be a popular opinion, but if the gamespot moderators were'nt the the internet's version of the morality police we would have a lot fewer jerk offs banned from that site who defect to this one.

We need NeoGAF level moderators for quick, swift perma bans.  It seems that the mods are mostly content with just locking a stupid thread, but I think people need to learn to fear them so the crap can stop and we can continue having intelligent discussions.
