Bug causing characters to be removed from camp

I felt like this might deserve it's own thread, in case some folks don't really read vidya game news on other sites.

However, there’s a lot of chatter about a bug which removes multiple characters from the camp entirely: Sadie, John, Abigail, and Jack.

I started Chapter 2 with the Uncle mission (I'm pretty sure) and checking today, I could only find John from the camp during Chapter 3. I'm fairly sure that I saw Jack at some points too, but Abigail I'm not sure of at all and I think Sadie might've been missing 'till her mission in Chapter 2 and then after.

It kinda sucks that I might've missed a bunch of character moments and conversations at the camp, but I also didn't even really notice this before reading about the bug, so it wasn't that bad in the end, I suppose. Someone over at reddit said that they appeared again in Chapter 4, so I'm hoping for that, because as much as I like this game, I really don't feel like basically starting the whole game over at this point.

No idea how this sort of thing managed to sneak into the final game after a big-ass day one patch, unless it was the patch that caused it. I guess all the reviewers lucked out or just didn't notice it as well? I probably wouldn't have either, like said above, because the camp is full of characters as it is.

I wonder if this was something that I've been dealing with and not realizing as well. I certainly haven't been encountering a ton of character interactions bits outside of a handful, though I want to say sitting down with Abigail was one of them.

I don't want to derail this into a general bug report thread, but I will say the more problematic bug I was running into after finishing a quest for John was my Arthur would continuously draw the sawed-off shotgun without me prompting if no gun was equipped, usually after about ten seconds. Which made it hard to travel through town without all of the sudden intimidating everyone. The other weird aspect of this was that I could then no longer equip that weapon from my wheel. I think it ended up going away but I also haven't had time to play much since that started happening.

I didn't realize that was a bug, I've been trying to turn in a side quest to sadie and jack. that sucks a lot.

This one is affecting my game and I didn't even realize it until yesterday since I have been spending so much time doing stuff other than story missions and not hanging out in camp that much. I'm not restarting though, hopefully a patch will address the problem soon.

Oof, I just got to chapter 2 and because of this I might just put this on the back burner for a patch or two.

I suspected my game was bugged; I kept looking for them during chapters 2 and 3. From my brief encounters with these three characters, they were among my favorites. What a bummer. I tried to rebuild the database on my PS4, but it didn't fix it.

Weirdly enough for me only Abigail and Sadie (I think I've never even seen her once) seem to be permanently missing. Jack's around all the time and John on occasion.

They do at least show up for their big missions, so could be worse. Abigail just came back yesterday evening, but I guess she just vanishes again after I leave the camp.

I do like it that some people say that they’re just out or standing on guard. I know everyone’s gotta contribute, but I don’t think Jack is out there, armed with a shotgun.

I have this bug but it's not been consistent. Sadie is definitely a no show, I had completely forgotten about her by the time she showed back up in the story missions. John is almost always around, usually standing by a cliffside or lakeside staring into the distance. I saw plenty of Jack during Chapter II but he's been completely absent in Chapter III; I've spent a lot of this chapter just hunting, so I'm not sure if he disappeared right away or not, but once I found an old western comic book and needed to return it to him his absence has been painfully obvious. Abigail seems directly tied to Jack's appearance, though I feel she was around for at least a bit between her story mission in Chapter II and John's first mission in Chapter III.

I'm just glad it's not game breaking and these characters will reappear when the story calls for it. This is a game I was planning to play at least twice anyway so in some ways this will feel like an accidental case of bonus content for me...silver linings!

If they're still around for missions and such then it's probably fine. There are plenty of people that Arthur can very awkwardly attempt to say good morning to while trundling towards the coffee.

I got this bug and luckily realized it before I finished Chapter 2, so now I'm starting fresh. Any other game I'd probably just press on, but character development is everything in this game, especially from those 4. It sucks as I had some decent gear and stuff, but the early parts go a lot faster when you know what to do. I'm keeping my old save in case they patch it before I catch up, but this run will probably be better anyway.

It appears I too have the same bug caused by that Uncle mission (At least now we know why John hated him as he obviously sent him off to some parallel universe!)

All of the four are missing from my game and I had been thinking they had just gone off somewhere. I had no idea they were supposed to be in the camp until I read that article. Damn!

There's no way I'm restarting now as I've been playing for aaaaaages doing shedloads of hunting and challenges etc. So hopefully RStar make a patch at some point.

Got to chapter 4 and it's better

I definitely didn't have John around camp during chapter 2. Could never find him.

Shit, I just assumed they...left?

I mean the game is very realistic so it makes sense they wouldn't wanna stick around all the damn time

John hasn't been seen in my camp for the entirety of chapter 3. I've been doing other stuff out in the world, so I haven't actually seen him in ages. Everyone else is there, and has been in chapter 2 as well. Seems to be many different permutations on this bug.

@gtb08: Abigail is still missing for me in chapter 4. Sadie is there, but John and Jack sleep by themselves. Is it the case with you as well?

Apparently the latest 1.03 patch (the one that adds the Online Beta) has fixed that bug... at least it has for me.

The four missing characters have now appeared in camp (and I'm STILL on chapter 2 after maaany hours of hunting, fishing and challenges)
