A addictive FtP game that gives the player no reason to keep coming back

I hope you like the look of this one tile set since this is all you'll be seeing for the entire time you play this game. I will say this screenshot does at least look cool.

Okay that title isn't completely true but the only reason I stuck with this game for a week was because I wanted to obtain the trophies. Guns Up is a mix of tower offence against other players and some tower defense against a CPU opponent. When attacking other players in PVP the player must spawn troops from a limited pool to take out of the enemies structures in their base. Along with good use of power ups like a bombing run that randomly bombs most of the battlefield or a decoy that'll make the entire enemy force shoot at it. With all of that it has a card system which could give you a big advantage against a opponent. Like you can start with 1000 more points to spend or make the enemies health lower. This is only balanced by the fact you never actually face another player directly since defense all comes down to how you lay out your base.

This shows off the bombing run power up being used.

Defense also comes into play if you decide to take on the CPU. Other than laying out the base in a better way the player just has a limited pool of power ups to hinder the never ending onslaught of soldiers. Lasting longer will give you more power ups like valor points to level up your troops or dynamite that can be used to clear out rocks that block off areas in your base. Every new battle gives the player cards that can be used to upgrade the limited amount of unlockable soldiers. The different variations of troops are what you might expect like a medic or a Ranger. Other than the ones they give you for free the amount of time it would have took me to unlock some of the later ones without the double xp/resource/card boost I got with a psplus pack would have been crazy. Also you only have limited control of your troops since without a rally card they just go whichever way they want.

Now that that is out of the way I just want to say that the amount of content in this game currently is severely lacking. DOTA 2 can get away with having one map thanks to the crazy amount of characters yet this game can not get away with something like that. Sure each player might have slight variations on how their base is built but other than the most creative ones they all end up getting smashed with the same tactics. Every game started with me spawning the same types of troops every time and other than a few rare loses they always succeeded. Doing the same thing over and over again is just not fun. Even something small like a pointless campaign story line would have made me interested in playing this a bit more than I did. But they do not have any of that and thus this feels like a unfinished game.

My first thoughts about Guns Up was that it had to be a 1 star game in my opinion. Yet thinking about it a while made me realize that it is fun to blow up other players bases and it did have a addictive quality to it that kept me coming back for more than I expected. It may not be perfect but it isn't the worst FtP game I've every played. I can not recommend it to any one that likes tower defense games though. It just doesn't have enough content to make it worth while to put so many hours into it to level up.
