Yea... I'm serious. The Spike TV VGA Awards is on 12/12 and as always, its more about the exclusive previews for next year's games than the actual awards. Geoff recently went on to Major's Minute, the podcast of Major Nelson (Xbox Live Bro for those who don't know) and said the following about Halo: Reach:

"At the VGAs, you'll actually go down onto the Planet Reach and see this game for the first time. It's all going to be in-game stuff, this is not CG, this is not live action. [...] You'll get the first glimpse at the world Reach, which I think is going to be phenomenal and I think is going to be the biggest game next year by far. Folks loved ODST and it was great, but you know, when people see the huge leap forward Bungie is taking with Reach, I don't know if you've seen it yet, but everyone I've talked to that seen it, has been on the team, is incredibly excited about this game. [...] It's going to be an epic piece, the guys at Bungie have done a phenomenal job, we are really proud to be partnered with them for this."

He's pretty psyched :D And now, I am too. That ass! I was trying to keep my expectations in check!

I really do not care about the Halo franchise any more, so Bungie is going to have to do something spectacular to pique my interest on this one. It's just my opinion, but I thought that Halo ODST looked and played like an outmoded game.  To be fair, of course everyone on the team is stoked about it. But you know, the team developing rogue warrior was ecstatic about their knife kill system too.

In terms of advancement, Bungie will have to do to Halo what Infinity Ward did with the first Modern Warfare. If they can, then I'll be the first to buy it.

Well, to be fair again, Geoff did say people who have seen it outside the team feel the same way. Oh and if you don't mind me asking, what do you mean "Bungie will have to do to Halo what Infinity Ward did with the first Modern Warfare"? What did IW do? I'm asking this in the most sincere way possible, and throwing my intense hatred for IW out of the way first. I am sincerely curious :D

I really don't know how much you can mess with the formula when a franchise is SO big. Major changes can kill a franchise by pissing off core users...
Then again, this may be why Bungie "broke away" from Microsoft. I'm excited to see the changes, myself, as both someone that doesn't have a 360 and very much non-fan of previous Halos. It's still something I'll play at friends' houses, but until they make some fundamental changes, the gameplay feels super one-dimensional and dated. Right now it's more on the Quake end of the shooter spectrum (run and gun with ridiculous weaponry and armour), so I'm eager to see where Bungie is willing to take this with Reach.

I'm excited, regardless. An impending Halo means an impending game of high-quality.

Where ODST succeeded most, in my mind, is in redefining the tone a Halo game can have. It was more personal, less flamboyantly "epic". But that personality gave the game a more textured layer of seriousness that I really appreciated. If Reach can further explore tone in presentation--and I don't mean pursuing the same tone ODST had, but possibly going a darker, more desperate route--then it can be a true change of course for the Halo series.

    Fingers crossed.

He seems to relish in the fact that he is able to get at games far before any of us, and just keeps going on and on about how great it is, or just keep on teasing and dropping hints to things he knows, but isn't able to talk about yet...he's kind of a douche.

maybe I'll just rent this game. I got caught by the Halo 3 hype train and I was extremely disappointed by it. Plus, Halo 3 red ring me, ODST Red Ring me (5 minutes into the game). I won't be going around playing Halo games anymore on my 360

@Zereta: Not so much. I posted my comment before I finished it...LOL. Not a huge Halo fan. But it's still my birthday. I would like to see Bungie do something outside of Halo but I fear that they kinda shot themselves in the foot because they are doing Halo for so long that they can't really know how to do anything else. I am just over saturated with Halo to care anymore. MS will milk it until bone dry. I have a feeling they [ms] will have a new halo game every year, you'll see. I won't be overly surprised if they announce that Halo 4 will come out 2011.

*Refrains from lecturing you about Milking*

... PHEW, Now that was tough. I think its reassuring to know that of the 2 teams working on games now at Bungie, one of them is this and the other is a New IP. And once Halo: Reach is done, I'm probably done with Halo as well. My loyalty is to Bungie and the quality of games they give and once the change of guards truly happen, you're right: Halo every year doesn't seem that far-fetched of an idea.

For me, I'm excited to see this getting this sort of 'praise' and hype not because its Halo, but because its Bungie.

Can't really tell because I am listening to it via the Quicktime player, so there are no time-stamps. Its right at the beginning, once Major Nelson is done talking to the Headset guy, They talk about Major Nelson not going to the VGAs despite Geoff inviting him and then Major calls him "Mr Exclusive" then Geoff says all that. Then after the second [...], there is a pause where Major says he hasn't seen Reach himself yet and then cuts back to Geoff.

OK I heard it, it's about 79 minutes in.  You got the quote a bit wrong in a few places, but it's also how he says it that threw me off.  I get the feeling he's just saying he just thinks it'll be the most popular game, which makes sense.

Yea, the quote's a bit wrong. To be fair, I took it off a dude from the Bungie net forums.

What I gathered was that what he's seen of it is what's phenomenal and apparently Bungie and other people who have seen the game that he's talked to feel the same.

Call me jaded, but that whole speech sounded like PR spin, especially considering Gametrailers is partnered with Microsoft which, correct me if I'm wrong, means money has exchanged hands at some point to promote the game.

Hey, there's always reason for suspicion. What you said is valid, but then again, the other game talked about in the podcast on Microsoft's side is Crackdown 2 and after the high of Halo: Reach, Geoff maybe mentioned Crackdown 2 for about 5 seconds. The dude seemed like he was legitimately psyched for it.

The Spike website will have a live stream of it I think. If you're only interested in this video though, Bungie has come out and said that they will put it up on Bungie.net after the show ends.

Well I hope it's as phenomenal as he claims it is, because they're going to have to impress the hell out of me to get me to buy another Halo game. Halo 3 was good and all, but I don't have the money to to spend $60 on merely good games. This needs to be a major step forward for the series or I'll probably just wind up borrowing it from a friend.

ODST was a step backwards, but Halo 3 itself has yet to be matched. Bungie better not try and get all nostalgic and shit. Even though this is before the first Halo I want some Master Chief wielding like two pistols in each hand and wearing a trenchcoat full of guns.

I think, maybe, you might be expecting a bit too much haha :D No trenchcoat is badass enough for the chief.

I still doubt this was a marketing act though, if not Crackdown 2, which was mentioned as well, would have gotten some love as well.

I agree... but it's better to wait and see.

But it's hard to understand if the game is trully awesome, why microsoft is taking the halo franchise from bungie.

I'm not sure what you are getting at.  Bungie has said it wants to do something other then Halo in the past.  In fact I'm a little surprised after that whole ordeal they are still trucking along making Halo stuff.  Guess saying one thing is easy enough but then getting paid is an entirely different motivator.

I am sincerely curious :D "
Dumb it down. "Spectacularly". i would like to see reach's multiplayer much, much bigger. If you've ever had an "elephant war" with all hogs, turrets, choppers and players thrown into the fray on the sands of ...sandtrap in CTF then you know what i'm talking about. SUch incredible battles happen once in a blue moon, Reach needs to make it happen more often.  As for the campaign i imagine it will play more like ODST as you're basically playing as early spartans, and the balance between automag and SMG that they had was awesome. Only it will be much, much more epic. Quite simply because ODST's trailer was you falling into a city and then being very quiet watching brutes go by. Reach's trailer was of a planet exploding.

I'm not sure you understand the situation here.

Bungie has said they want to stop making Halo games, it has nothing to do with Microsoft taking it away from them or anything else, they just want to branch out.
When this was announced, they said Reach would be their final Halo game.  Nothing has changed.

Haha, you don't get it in the UK as well? (Assuming you are from the UK and your name isn't just for lols). Yea, we here in Singapore don't get it as well. Well, the VGAs will be shown via live stream on Spike.com. I'm sure there will be Youtube videos of them as well. If all you're interested in is the Reach video, then Bungie has said they will put it up on Bungie.net once the show's over.

And I have experienced what you described as a "Elephant War" before, Crunch. And brother, that is one of the many reasons why Halo 3 is still my number one game.

And its funny how out paths cross everytime we get to something Halo related.@empfeix said:

Because a lot of people still want Halo. ODST was a corporate decision to make up for the cancelled Peter Jackson project but Reach is a labor of love because for all the Halo Lore Junkies (myself included), Reach is like the most epic thing to happen in the Halo universe. And besides, A team at Bungie is working on a New IP as we speak.

Yep. I expect an announcement either at Next Year's E3 or hell, if Reach does well, Next year's VGA sounds like a good time.

You see, Normally I would think that as well but if he were going to promote the games being shown on the Microsoft front, wouldn't it make more sense to talk a lot about Crackdown 2 instead, which was also mentioned?

ODST is probably my game of the year, so the buzz on Reach is great to hear. 3 dollar bill, y'all.
