    Originally a fan-made character, Teto was first unveiled on April 1, 2008, claiming her to be a new Vocaloid. The fan design caught on, and an official voicebank for her was produced for UTAU, a freeware vocal synthesis software. Already a relatively popular character, Teto was one of the first publicly available UTAU voicebanks, only furthering her popularity.

    Over time, Teto gained official recognition from Crypton Future Media as an honorary Vocaloid, first appearing as DLC for Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA 2nd.
