A map that is updated in real-time as you play a level. Usually seen in FPSs and RPGs.
Cartography is the is the study and practice of crafting geographical maps. Some games allow players to create and/or edit the maps of the game world.
Everything you need isn't always spelled out for you on the map. Sometimes even the map is not there till you go explore it.
A device used in many games with vast open worlds, to travel instantaneously from one place to another. It sometime appears in the form of an item or skill.
A hub is the central location from which a player can venture out into different areas of a game. It is often used as a clever way of masking loading between levels or worlds.
A new mechanic first introduced in the game Final Fantasy XII. Licenses are required to equip weapons and armor, learn magicks and technicks, and enhance a character's abilities.
A game mechanic that lets players add footnotes to maps.
A game where you eventually receive a map of an area. Like in Metroid Prime you have map download stations to get a map outline of the area. This is the same concept in the exploring Castlevania games.
An overworld is a simplified view of the game world that allows players to freely move to different locations or levels.
Puzzles may need to be solved before the player can progress to the next section of the game. Often it may not be clear to players exactly what the puzzle is, or whether the an in-game items needs to be attained before it is even possible to solve it.
Quest tracking is a common theme in RPGs and open-world adventure games, whereby the game monitors, records, and occasionally directs the player as to his next mission.
Games with randomly (or rather, procedurally) generated environments create new levels from predetermined pieces each time the game is played.
Games where players are given material to read; this includes books, newspapers, and emails.
A viewable map that displays the entire game world. The map also usually shows the player's location in the world.
