The Nebelwerfer (literally translated from German - "Fog thrower") were primarily intended to deliver poison gas and smoke shells. Initially two different mortars were fielded before they were replaced by a variety of rocket launchers ranging in size from 15 to 32 centimetres (5.9 to 13 in). The artillery has been used in every campaign of Nazi Germany, except in the Balkans campaign. It's main purpose was an anti-infantry rocket artillery that fires all of it's rockets at once and leaving a lot of smoke after that, leaving the enemy to think that it's a smoke barrage. The canon was adapted to tanks and as an anti-air battery. The loud, shrill howling noise of the incoming rockets led the Americans soldiers give it the nickname "Screaming Meemie".
