If, like me, you find that things in slow-mo are almost always irrationally funny to you, I thoroughly recommend switching over to the YouTube version so you can slow it down to 0.25 speed from 13.18 onwards and just watch/hear that whole segment unfold. Gives it the dream/trip-like quality to suit the action.
@vandelay: I think you and I have different ideas of passion.
“ It is what I wake up for at the end of the day”
“ I know where my place is at in the world. I am not welcomed into society because of my health problems, so I stray away from people and humanity. This is what I do. I play video games. “
“ If anyone wants to take that away from me, you won't.”
This doesn’t read like someone excited for a game but someone with unresolved trauma who needs actual professional help. Mental health support shouldn’t be something that we’re afraid of encouraging. If someone said they have had a cough and sore throat for months you likely wouldn’t find it offensive to suggest seeing a doctor. Here is a poster who is literally explaining how he uses excitement for unreleased games as a proxy for dealing with trauma, if you can’t see the danger in that I don’t know what to tell you.
You don't know the OP's situation. They have painted a not so great picture of their life. If this is what they need to get through their days and the pain they are dealing with, then so be it. I think you're right to suggest they may benefit from mental health support, but your original words came off as a bit unkind (starting with 'fucking yikes bro', no matter how much you respect you offer as a prelude, is not how to engage a stranger in a supportive manner). And if you can't go back and see that, then I don't know what to tell you.
Another way to do it is to respectfully ask someone directly if they are receiving counselling or other mental health support for their struggles. This leaves it open to OP if they want to talk further about what they've been dealing with in life.
So I watched this live and sat on this for a few days but decided I would say something: let's not get in the habit of comparing old, soon to be out-of-date hardware to the menopause, please?
I can't remember where it was to point it out but it's one of the most brazenly sexist remarks I've heard in some time (mainly because I've not been around people or, more specifically, many men recently).
Knowing Alex's political stances, I am sure he didn't intend for that comparison to be offensive but, nevertheless, don't compare a person's biological functions (particularly predominantly cis women's biology) to ageing hardware.
Menopausal women/people still have plenty left in the tank and their quality of life, their value and their lifespan need not be tied to their sexual reproductive capabilities nor their hormonal levels.
I'm so confused about the people getting annoyed at the fact that some of these games are PS5 + PS4. Do they want it to be PS5 only? For what reason?
Cross-generational is a good thing in my view... but Jim Ryan's previous words on console generations are what they would call in UK politics "economical with the truth". That's where the controversy is and rightly so. Look at what they didn't show at the showcase - but that they released during it - and tell me they weren't trying to bury that stuff. Trump-esque.
Have to say... utterly dreadful behaviour from Sony to just quietly announce that Spider-Man: MM and Horizon: Forbidden West are now PS4 games too. Just so happens to get out there hours before pre-orders and they didn't have the guts to own that on their showcase? Consumers should have this info well in advance - especially when many of them already have the means to play these games without spending hundreds of dollars/pounds/euros/etc. When I get a next-gen console, it's most definitely going to be a Series X now.
EDIT: And Sackboy too.
ANOTHER EDIT: The words of Jim Ryan (SIE President and CEO) in May 2020 when asked about Microsoft's cross-generational approach to Xbox One/Series X:
"We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.
"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5."
He had his opportunity to spell out that they had cross-generational games (a good thing for people in this trying time, in my opinion!) and decided instead to stick the knife into Microsoft knowing full well that most of their first-party PS5 launch games would be cross-generational. I mean, he's the boss; he would have known they were launching these games on PS4 even then!
Not just that people are living in a financial crisis and already feel a peer pressure to have the newest things and then you surreptitiously tell some of them: 'PSST! You don't actually need a PS5 to play most of our first-party launch games - pass it along, will ya? But don't shout it from the rooftops, okay?'
Dishonesty and insensitivity are my biggest turn offs - hence why I can't get off on why I'm so angered by this behaviour.
But I've managed to scrap together a summary of the lost episodes so you don't totally miss out!
Episode 50 show notes:
'Tony and Sara drop by for a discussion of THORRRR! We try not to spoil anything, but if you're interested in skipping that discussion, head to around the 29:12 mark, wherein Rorie starts talking about the San Francisco International Film Festival, Dylan Dog, and sundry other items! It's a rambling mess!'
(Community notes: Also had a discussion of Troll Hunter and, following the Comic Vine discussion, Rorie was totally on his own for a solo ramble!)
Episode 81 show notes:
'A slow movie weekend can't stop the BTSD train from rolling through, with discussion of The Artist, Shame, and My Week With Marilyn! We intended it to be an hour long but couldn't restrain ourselves!'
(Community notes: Rorie was tired, complained of being tired, discussed a secret, sad email and continued to pronounce 'Edgar' as 'Edger' to the chagrin of one member. Talk included 'OSS 117: Cairo - Nest of Spies', best fight scenes, day after Thanksgiving theatre-going, heterosexual men being weirdly uncomfortable with male nudity, Alex's 'Fassboners' and his [then] belief that 'best actor' and 'best actress' awards should just be 'best performer').
A small contribution to the archival work, but I hope it's helpful to someone in years to come! Thanks for the reunion!
Cool it's the 40+ duders being cynical on new games time!
You may not have intended this but your comment comes across as ageist. This could be articulated in a better (albeit less snappy but, ironically, less cynical) way.
I saw plenty of cynics on Ubisoft's Twitch chat. Actually, most comments seemed very negative. Worth noting that Twitch is predominantly used by those aged between 18-34. I think the sentiments of the crew were broadly in keeping with what many were saying about this stream: disappointing; nothing new; devoid of ideas; uninspiring sequels in perpetuity; apolitically political; abuse allegations unacknowledged; blergh; etc.
You can't force them to feign enthusiasm. The PS5 stream last month showed they can still be enthusiastic; last year's Stadia announcement stream showed that they can still be surprised.
