I actually think them slapping a '5' on the title was one of the worst things they could have done. It made everyone think that they may have actually made a proper sequel this time and not another rushed, slapped together spin-off which this ended up being
It created a sense of false hope in the older gamer generation who wasted away countless hours with THPS1-4. The only positive to came out of this was all the relived memories of the old games...I havent seen so much chatter about those games until now
I agree. I'm actually really surprised at the reaction to this game, as far as surprise at its lack of quality, but I guess it just shows how important marketing and labeling is to a lot of people. After RIDE and Shred, this game, with the same developer... I expected as bad as this or even worse maybe. Ride was a $120 game. These games have been bad and they haven't been cheap either.
To me all the games before this were just "the next Tony Hawk" and to me the series has been dead.
@humanity: The early mission stuff doesn't tie directly into the story but if you don't play the tapes I think they just seem like practically side ops. Also since he didn't listen to the tapes I don't think he got on the first mission how the enemies are all traveling to meet and then separating.
And yeah to be fair to Dan I only realized the Loadout option like 100 hours in. Overhand grenade toss took me maybe 60 hours.
Let it be noted for the record that Dan Ryckert cannot fathom how someone might call in sick the next day after a flu shot, Dan Ryckert, the same man that is scared to eat mayonnaise.
I would not call out but I know my arm has been pretty rough after a shot before.
Hey @danryckert! I'm going to hazard a guess that, given your play style, you've probably never used smoke grenades. I just wanted to point out that apart from just creating a visual obstruction, smoke grenades also incapacitate soldiers caught in their field. It doesn't fully knock them out like stun or sleep grenades, but they are rendered immobile and unaware while they have a coughing fit for the duration of the grenade (if they aren't wearing gas masks).
This can be a pretty cheap early game tool for Drew to use if he wants to deal with a crowd non-lethally.
Yeah smoke grenades are usually dumb in most games but they are fantastic in this game. Also so useful if you get spotted. Throw down a couple and bolt.
@peteyboles: I mean there is hours of Dan gushing about wrestling on the site so I don't think that's accurate. You will just find a fair share of soccer hate in America. Which sure can be ignorant but it's just a weird thing that's taken on a life of its own.
@bread_harrity: Oh that's totally fair. I can see the point you're making and what you're getting at. I just think Dan obviously is trying to be ridiculous and funny almost all the time and I don't see how others aren't getting it by this point. He even has had direct moments like that one I mention when he pretended to now know what Half Life was and in a podcast they had a whole discussion about how he says things like "X is terrible" definitively even though it's more his point of view. It's Dan's style. Jeff is the same way most of the time.
Look at Dan Ryckert if you were ever curious as to how the rest of the world views Americans. He's like an American version of Borat. The character not the movie. He's reaching those levels of culture parody.
This is 100% true.
I'm actually surprised he's learning some of these things now. I mean, where were these conversations from when he was in Game Informer? Did those guys just give up on Dan? Was Dan not as inquisitive back in GI and weren't asking these questions?
Or maybe he plays that up as a joke guys? Like this site is partially in the comedy business?
Dan did a whole Quick Look where he pretended he didn't know what Half Life was to troll people.
