I'm trying to read comments on stuff less these days (not just here) because honestly they usually just end up bumming me out, but I couldn't help myself on this one. It's kind of fascinating scrolling through and seeing the various different camps that people fall into with their reaction to this. If we give people the benefit of the doubt and assume that there isn't actually anyone here that watched the first episode and believes this is a "real" show with genuine critical movie insight, then as far as I can tell the groups that are left are:
1. People who are taking the show at face value and hate it (and who may or may not have actually watched it) and are using it as yet more ammo for their "NOT MY GIANT BOMB/CANCELLING SUB" crusade
2. People who are taking the show at face value and are just sad that GB is moving away from gaming content.
3. People who recognize it's a bit but still enjoyed it as a satire/comedy piece.
4. People who recognize it's a bit but don't find it funny (and are probably also sad about the direction the site is going in).
5. People who recognize it's a bit, but not that the bit extends beyond the show itself, leaving them confused and/or feeling like they "just don't get it".
6. People who recognize this is a very weird thing and that there's more to it than just the show, the staff are all in on it, and that it will presumably eventually lead to some sort of pay off, and while they might be unsure if they're actually into it they're intrigued enough to let it play out and see where it goes.
7. People who love everything about it.
Bonus groups:
- People making jokes about Bryan Stills being real and/or being appreciative of his expertise/analysis
- [TIN FOIL HATS ON] Dummy accounts created to leave fake comments just to stir the pot?!!?? Either that or this was so divisive that it actually compelled people who don't normally post much to chime in XD
These aren't all mutually exclusive of course, there's going to be some crossover.
I must admit I wasn't familiar with VB before she appeared on this site, but she seems real cool and a great fit.
I saw the tweet from Bakalar about her going to hang out with them, but it only dawned on me a few days later that maaaaaaaybe she was there to hash out details about coming on board full time.
Jeff on Riders Republic: "It almost seems like they have to try and drum up interest in a game that maybe they didn't see the numbers for in the beta"
In-game dialogue starts playing.
I think I see the problem.
EDIT:
Look, I get it, I'm old. Clearly Ubisoft doesn't give two fucks about marketing the game to someone like me. But I would really love to know if the "kids" actually like that stuff, or if it's more a case of them not finding it completely and utterly insufferable, so while it might not necessarily be a strong selling point it doesn't actively turn them off either?
I'm fine with premium content being made available to everyone, but I will echo what some others have said on here in that I think this new trend of ripping segments out of UPF and posting them as quick looks is a bad look for the site. UPF is called UPF for a reason, and it works for that show. But taken out of context, I think it genuinely looks unprofessional when presented as a stand alone video. I get that things have changed/are changing and the site is in transition, but if the concern is that there aren't enough resources right now to do "proper" Quick Looks then I personally think it would be better to just not have them for now. It could well be that they've decided that this is actually what they want QL's to be now and that the old format is gone for good, which is their choice of course, but I still don't think it's a good look.
