@sethmode: You don't get it. Abby said bad things about anime, and that's just unacceptable!

@meierthered: Because 24 hours after posting the video, we're at 350+ comments. Say what you will about Giant Bomb's GoTY deliberations, they get people to engage with the content. On a site built around personality and community, this is exactly what they should do.

So I just put a solid four hours into Horizon Zero Dawn between yesterday and today, and I really dig it so far.

I haven't read all the comments so I'm not sure it was brought up, but Abby (and I think Vinny?) kept saying it did new things/brought new things for the VN genera and the sort, Dan wanted to know what they were. Abby nor Vinny really play VN's though so they can't actually answer that. That's my main issue with the arguments for Dream Daddy. I finish GoTY only knowing that DD is apparently decently written and has decent representation, representation and not much else.

Yeah, I don't think Abby should've said that it did new things for the genre when she's not familiar with the genre. I also think Dan also shouldn't have kept saying that it needed to do something new. Whether or not it did anything new for the genre, Abby and Vinny explained why they liked this game. Ben chimed in as well. Two people liking a game enough to put it on their personal lists and one other person saying they liked what they saw of it is pretty much the recipe for getting a game at number 10 on these lists.
This type of argument seems to happen at least once every year, where someone uses "but what does it do that's new?!" as an argument to keep something off the list.

The problem is that those arguments aren't very specific. You could take all those exact same quotes and apply them to a lot of other games. If you felt so inclined you could just as easily say that... Uncharted... is "very funny," "very effective at what it does," "has a lot of beatiful moments," "is really engaging and has a lot of cool things you can do in it," etc. That doesn't mean I disagree, and I do think other better points were made, but those quotes are kind of not helping her case.

Yeah, you could say those things about other games...because they are reasonable ways to describe a game. I'm not sure what you're saying here. Saying these things is no less specific than saying a game's story "goes places," which is frequently used phrase. Let's list all of the phrases used to describe any game on this list. I guarantee that any such list would be full of such phrases, regardless of the game.

My comment was in response to all of the people who are ridiculously claiming that Abby didn't say anything other than that the game was very good. She explicitly explained why she thought it was very good, using the same types of phrases that show up in the video game industry lexicon all the time.

People keep saying that Abby didn't articulate her thoughts on Dream Daddy other than to say it was good. This is actually incorrect! She brings up a number of specific points at around the 45 minute mark, give or take, in this very long video, so I can see what some people might not remember it. To clear up any misconceptions about what was actually said about the game, I offer the following information (spoiler tagged for those who have not had a chance to listen yet):

Things Abby said about Dream Daddy, starting at 43:18: "I think it's very funny. I think it's very effective at what it does. I think they all feel like real people...I think there's a lot of heart in that game. I think there's a lot of really beautiful moments in that game...I think it's really engaging and there are a lot of cool things you can do in it...I think the writing is really phenomenal."

At 45:40:"Really touching moments throughout the game and there's a really compelling and deep story to it...very fun and very engaging and it feels good to play."

It was really predictable when they started bending the rules for one game alone. It was an early access game when they made these podcasts. None had played the official release. They should have dismissed PUBG for the same reason they did Fire Pro, which also got a release this year.

My thoughts on this exactly.

Some of Dan's arguments against Dream Daddy come across as particularly ridiculous when you remember that last year, his number one personal game (and game that got 10th place on the site list) was a Harvest Moon-style game where you grew crops and gave presents to your crushes. I get not playing Dream Daddy. I get not being into dating sims. What I don't get is his argument against it, considering last year.

I don't agree with Abby saying "it does things for the genre" when she is not familiar with the genre. But other than that, she explains why she likes the game's writing.

@sethmode: I'm just over an hour into the podcast and at the part where he's making these arguments. I'm definitely curious to see how many more times "it doesn't do anything new" is brought up.
