@vinny GameSpy never sold games. They were a matchmaking/server browsing solution that other game developers/publishers paid for. It was basically middleware.

He may be conflating it with GameFly. For awhile they were trying to compete with Steam by selling PC games directly, in addition to the rental stuff. They bought Direct2Drive and folded it into a Steamlike client they had created that you could buy games from and what not. I think it bombed pretty hard, and they eventually shuttered the client and sold off Direct2Drive, which is operating again with new owners.

However, I think you can access any game you bought from GameFly's client on the Direct2Drive site now. I never bought any, but they gave me (and I think all existing Direct2Drive users) EUIII for free for downloading the client. Now I can download that and DA2 (the one game I had bought from Direct2Drive before GameFly bought them) from their current site.

I can't think of any gaming sites/clients that have completely closed, to the point you can no longer access the games you bought, but it's probably happened with some smaller site.

I doubt Lara Croft Go or Rise of the Tomb Raider are eligible. They normally count the release date as the first NA release of a game, even if later comes to different platforms than the original. Both of those games were discussed in last year's GotY podcasts.

Also, sudo-research and research that only supports their line of thinking.

I'm sorry, but this just killed me.

Sudo is a UNIX command that lets you execute a different command as another user. I haven't regularly used UNIX in years, so seeing it made me weirdly nostalgic. OTOH, the word you're looking for is "pseudo".

@ripelivejam: I just went and looked at imdb, and there were 12 Oz movies made between 1910 and 1939, which was when the version of The Wizard of Oz that everyone remembers came out.

In other words, there was never a time when it wasn't extremely difficult to come up with something truly original.

@av_gamer: @murdoc_: I understand that they don't have a high level of interest in FFXV but they've done news announcements for games they aren't particularly into. Similarly, they seem to arbitrarily choose which Nintendo directs to report about as well. Sometimes it feels like they only report on things if it comes through at a time when one of them is awake and paying attention to their emails and/or twitter. It just seems like luck whether something is reported or not.

Honestly, that's probably, more or less, true. That may not be a particularly satisfying answer, but there you have it. I mean, this is not primarily a news site. They do post some news, because... well, I don't really know why. I guess Jeff feels it adds something to the site. But they're definitely not trying to be a Polygon or someplace that posts a lot of news.

And they have one news guy in Austin. Occasionally someone else will post an article, but it's rare and only if they really want to talk about something. So whether something gets posted depends a lot on his availability to write about it, I would assume. If he's out of the office, or busy working on something else, then it's not going to get reported on in 99% of cases.

She had a kid within... I dunno, the last 6 months maybe? Something like that. Anyway, she hasn't really been on since then.

Well, since we're getting political here, I'd like to see some pro-union person defend Police Unions and their complicity in police terrorizing of minority communities. Unions exist to protect their members and, as part of that, make it harder for those members to be fired. That's all well and good, but what if one of those members should be fired because he's a racist fuckbag who goes around shooting black people for little to no reason?

Given current (and, frankly, not so current) events in the US, this isn't a hypothetical edge case. It happens way too often and the Police Unions are only too eager to close ranks and fight tooth and nail for these guys to keep their jobs, so they can get back on the streets and shoot even more minorities.

@puppykisses: I watched probably a dozen episodes of the show and never heard her name pronounced, as she doesn't even show up until later in the show.

@blindx0r: I don't care about the scores.

That's on you. If you ignore the data in favor of your interpretation of their off the cuff remarks, confirmation bias is inevitable. It says nothing about how Jeff actually treats new games, only about how you perceive he treats them.

Also, this is a thread about Jeff's review. Of course the scores are relevant here.
