Call SFV story mode a lot of things, just don't use the word 'story'.

No Caption Provided

Maybe a story mode in Street Fighter V was too much to ask for.

I mean yes, they seem to be pulling out all the stops when it comes to the way the game is being handled. Systems are broken, characters can’t make their release window. If I was playing this game a lot more than I am, I’d be able to give an honest opinion on whether or not the damnable fate of SFV affects me.

I would have cared a great deal about story mode. It’s like junk food. Ryu’s ongoing struggles with his inner demons, the quest to take down shadaloo, camaraderie between fight bros. It’s always sucked me in. I have various animated films, comics and mangas about how ridiculous Street Fighter lore is. It’s not like the bar for a quality street fighter is high enough, so SFV could have easily pulled something out of their ass without trying, so what went wrong?

Ryu throws a fireball, the end.
Ryu throws a fireball, the end.

No focus for one. There’s a lot of characters on the roster, and I understand they’d want to give as much air time as they could to everyone, but you still need to have the one character to move everything along. It started out interesting with Charlie, coming back from the dead and being greeted by a mysterious Russian parka in the middle of a jungle. But then you have all these subplots competing for equal attention. Ryu is sitting down through most of the story, Rashidoooooo has a friend, Chun-li wants to have a baby. Characters that don't really have much of a story are designated to being loud, obnoxious and slapstick, because they needed to be included anyway so why not give them the roll of grunting paperweight? It becomes various moments of action figures smashing into each other and they all play out like a series of vignettes rather than weaving a consistent plot.

Which is probably due to there being no smooth transition between story and gameplay. In between each instance is a 10 second-or-so load time chopping up the pace, which depending on your own patience can really take you out of it. (who has patience these days.)

The series of events plays out, then the only thing left for anyone is for Ryu to show up and be Goku. Then everyone stands in front of an exploding building as if they’re watching the smouldering hot mess that is SFV unravel.

Spoilers, Charlie is DEAD!
Spoilers, Charlie is DEAD!

Is it good enough to wait for? It’s hardly the price of admission. Story mode would have been a lot more effective if it stayed at those little single character story beats. At least then, they could have used them as a ‘try before you buy’ to characters you haven’t purchased yet. Hell, they way they did story for the normal arcade mode in the previous games was good enough, or dare I say, more effective?

It sticks out as a thing that took too long to come out, which is an ironic twist for something that clearly needed more time. Motivations/and scenarios are put together with tape, and character development is non existent.

The only thing that really stood out for me is that Chun-li wants a kid, and I’m pretty sure she just decided to steal one in the end.

I could say that Capcom tried their best with the story mode... but did they?

Now I have to play catchup on some things:

Overwatch competitive mode is out although I haven’t had much of any time to play it this week. But how do we feel about it? Was competitive going to be the make it or break it moment for you? Have you had more fun, or have the more serious players turned you off from the experience? Do you do well enough on a solo queue and play nice with others, or do you roll with a crew because strangers give you anxiety?

How come there’s not any love for Symmetra? Is it because a lot of people think of her as pointless because her Ult is a teleporter? I always find it very interesting to see how people play her. Yeah a lot of people seem to just pile all of the lasers in one spot, and some have actually done a good job hiding them. and for the most part that's probably all she can really do because she's so squishy, but I love seeing that character get use because of how different she is from the regulars. I don’t know why I find myself to be such an apologist/defender for that character most of the time, but here we are.

I'm currently jumping between both PC and PS4 versions of the game, because I have friends that play on both, and it's certainly night and day the types of people I'm playing with. I do play a controller with both versions because why the hell not? It's actually pretty easy to be just as good as those with the keyboard and mouse, maybe that's the way Blizzard designed it.

But with the way PC games are these days, would you find yourself preferring the controller or is it Mouse and Keyboard all the way?

When I'm not at home sinking into OW, I’m still playing a hell of a lot of Hyrule Warriors on commutes. (I've actually put more time into the 3DS version than the Wii U one at this point, poor reviews of the game be damned, it's still a lot of fun.) That Marin DLC was released on Thursday and the best way to describe that character is ‘Constantly shaking water out of a bell.’ But it’s great that their batch of dlc characters are focused on the portable Zelda games. In the case of Marin, is pretty cool to see a 3D model of a character that would have otherwise been lost to time.

And hell, this is the largest roster of female characters that any Zelda game has ever had right?

----

Before I end, I should mention and share that the News Friends podcast that I run, actually had the time to get together and talk about video games. Specifically E3. It was a lot of fun and worth checking out. Since I spend every week talking about news, it’s kind of a relief to sit and talk vidja games.

But we don’t have enough time to make it part of the regular family of podcasts, and I’m not really sure if there’s enough interest in doing something weekly.

But when we do get around to it, it’s fun. So please enjoy.

I thought the SFV story was cheesy fun and had some nice moments for "feels" if you're way into SF stuff. To each their own I suppose. Real weird about the load times though. I'm on PS4 and pretty much every transition was dude gets into battle stance in cutscene, game immediately transitions into gameplay.

Symmetra is my most played character and I even have her incredibly racist and culture insensitive skin bought. Sadly she is only good on defense and not on every map. Symmetra is the epitome of a "situational character." Maybe they'll do something in the future in order to make her a more versatile member of the team but so far she's the El Dorado defense pick for the first point.

I opted to refer to the SFV story as a "waste of resources", if the game wasn't still plagued with dozens of problems I would simply pass it off as a dumb story mode. But there's still so many issues existing in the game that the Story mode just comes across as "why did you spend your money and time on this garbage when you could've fixed the clipping, or the net code or the battle lounge etc."

@starvinggamer: I guess you got lucky, I'm on ps4 and had long load times most of the way, really killed any momentum especially when they were doing 3 second cuts.

@technician: There were plenty of load times, just never when transitioning from cutscenes to gameplay.

It will be because of the servers, if you are online in the last 2 days you will have noticed some extremely long load times even if you use training mode or survival, when the servers are wonky everything slows down (it comes and goes)

@deepcovergecko: I've been nothing but online?

Yeah but the servers are running poorly, last night I would get black screens lasting 15 seconds after every match, seems a bit better currently.

@starvinggamer:I guess since I read a lot of the mangas and watch the movies I wanted something as equally filled with narrative. but yeah, there were some bad loads in between things that also took me out of it. Ah well.

@humanity: agreed, and she really stands out for being as situational as she is. Kind of wish the roster as a whole was like that. ( but I always find myself defaulting to specific characters with some situations due to people I play with. I'm going to have to explore more.)

@ivdamke: hopefully now that they pushed story mode out the door, they can really fix their shit. but for most of my friends I feel like it's too late for them to get back into it at this point.

the height of Capcom story telling was Alpha 3..... back in 1999. It's amazing how Capcom just shit the bed with Sony money.

I'm a big fan of a cinematic story mode with so much focus on the characters has so many ridiculous graphical glitches. Rashid's beard clips through his chest, Helen's hair is constantly freaking out and going through her body, Necalli's "black goop" looks terrible. Cool stuff.

I haven't finished it yet but I'm having fun with the SFV Story Mode. The pacing is choppy as hell for sure but I haven't really noticed the load times (on PS4 anyways) at all. Definitely not 10 second load times :S. That's a bummer, whatever is causing it. Frankly I felt the story mode was never needed, but it was a nice bonus for me on top of the base game. Visually some of it is cool/impressive + Bison is so dope.

(I can never tell if the clipping complaints are legitimate or not.. honestly 9/10 games still have swords and guns floating on people's bodies and I should are about clipping? hmm? /shrug. Have people actually dropped this game because of clipping? No way, right?)

Also, don't take this the wrong way... but, shouldn't this be 3 forum posts or a blog? Your title is about SFV but only half your post is. Kinda rubs me the wrong way when you pitch your podcast at the end, as it feels your headline was clickbait to advertise your podcast, which makes me entirely mistrust what you say about SFV unfortunately. Just my thoughts.

@dudeglove:CyberConnect2 would have made the most amazing Street Fighter story game.

@geraltitude: It actually is a blog post, and it was in general. but I guess a mod decided to throw it into the SFV forum.

Duder what, a mod turned your blog into a forum post without asking? That seems super rude! Plus the are robbing you of those sweet sweet "Blog Comments" stats (nvm driving folks to follow your blog). Well, either way then, your explanation makes way more sense. This being brought to light, maybe I will click that podcast link!

edit: I do see the blog label now, so maybe it's all me? Didn't we used to see links to users blogs (previous blogs, etc) in a blog post before? Maybe that shit changed & I never noticed. Don't mind me, I'm an old man.

I think he was saying he crossposted his blog in the General Discussion forum and then the mods moved it to SFV forum (probably because it only really discusses SFV)

When you submit a blog you always have the option of x-posting to a forum of your choosing or not at all. It's one functionality of the site I always found neat.

e.g. you could see the OP's blog here or here

@slag: @geraltitude: Yeah I do the cross posting thing a lot, because people wouldn't really read blogs otherwise. (such how it is, because we all gotta type something.) I used to post things on specific forums if one part of the blog was pretty substantial, but mods then prodded me and put it in general.

I guess this one was ~Extra Special~

@slag: @bonbolapti:

lol sorry to make such a fuss, was just a passing thought but revealed how little I know of the blog system. Crossposting is a no-brainer, as you said blogs get little traction here otherwise. Oh and ps! In your OP you call the podcast New Friends but on your site as News Friends. Both are good names lol, but believe latter is right. Another nit picked by yours truly! :D :D

@slag: ah I see thanks Slag; even having used crossposting I didn't realize it worked like this! Always thought they were mirrors that took you to the same place (your second link), if that makes any sense.. (they are the same place sort of, but with two interfaces basically, as comments are shared). Also, X-post is a cool term.

The story mode reminded me of when I was a kid and would gin up pointless scenarios for my action figures to "fight" one another.
I'm fine with the dumb gags and the way the characters cross the globe like some of us cross the street, but there is a supreme lack of focus in the narrative, and the loop of: watch pointless 20 second cutscene, beat up on brain-dead CPU for 1 round, repeat, got very boring after a short amount of time.

It's the length of mode that I could see myself easily tearing through in one sitting, though in reality it took several. Not because I was busy or because it was too much to handle, but because it was so boring that I felt guilty for spending my time on it. Mortal Kombat this is not.

I'll take the 30,000 Fight Money or whatever it was, but I don't feel like it was worth my time, or the wait.

If anything, there's too little story there. The amount of outside-of-game backstory for SF characters is immense and yet little is here. Necalli the Jobber, Bison not having any good quips, and Nash continuing to earn that "Edgelord" nickname (why isnt this a Title in-game?)

In the end, Rashid and FANG were good, and 30k FM isn't nothing to sneeze at but they need to get the Asura's Wrath guys (if they're still at Capcom) to do Season 2's story dealies.

I really don't agree with the people saying its dumb fun, or just silly and don't take it seriously.

The biggest problem is that BARELY have the courage to do anything. Most of the plot points go nowhere, most of the story is the same after the game as it was before. Its so afraid to really do something major and to have any really interesting developments occur. Its just one big fan service thing that tries to jam as many characters into it as possible, without really caring if it makes sense or has any cohesion to it.

For it to be dumb fun it should have big, dumb bombastic moments. It has none of that.

I didn't have very high expectations and I still thought it was some pretty bad disjointed nonsense. It did do a good job of making me interested for Juri and Urien, so I guess it's mission accomplished on that front.

@perfidioussinn: Street Fighter 5 has weird clipping issues with hair. I know it sounds nitpicky, but I can't believe no one at Capcom noticed that Ken's hair goes through his chest in the selection screen (not like it is an uncommon animation, it happens every time with the default skin).

Yeah I'm having a hard time understanding why they thought having hackers, chest pieces and moons being at the center of the story was a good idea. This is a game about people throwing fireballs at each other right?

It wasn't mind blowingly good, but it's pretty up there as far as fighting game stories go if you really think about it. I'm glad they took some props from MK's storytelling but left all the snarky, dickish one-liners behind.
The only story choice that really bothered me was how Chunli jobbed so hard. She should have defeated Bison or something, now that would have been alright.
