GOTY 2014--Retrospective

For the past couple of years, I started to write down two Game of the Year lists in December: one for the current year, and another for the previous year. I don't play every single video game that comes out, but sometimes I do eventually catch up and play games I couldn't fit into that calendar year. Sometimes it just takes longer to get into a game or to get around to finishing it. Whatever the reason is, it felt like my GOTY list I write up quickly becomes outdated somehow and it needs a second look.

Overall, my list hasn't changed dramatically from my previous 2014 GOTY list on Giant Bomb. The top three games from my original list are still my top three games in this revised list. I moved a couple of games down and swapped two games around. The main change is two new games were added, which bumped off two smaller games I enjoyed quite a bit last year: Velocity 2X and 1001 Spikes. As it turns out, the more I played of both Velocity 2X and 1001 Spikes, the more challenging those games got for me. Eventually I hit a skill ceiling which either prevented me to proceed or felt less encouraged to see the later content the games had to offer, since they were getting more complicated.

I still haven't played everything. I never touched Shovel Knight or Persona 4: Arena Ultimax. I still only got past the first two hours of South Park: The Stick of Truth and Episode 1 of The Walking Dead: Season Two. I now know Nidhogg is indeed a lot more fun when you play it against actual people, but I still don't think it breaks through my current Top 10. Despite those few omissions (for me anyway) and a couple lingering questions, I am overall pretty confident and satisfied with this revised list.

Without further ado, here is my GOTY 2014 Retrospective list:

List items

  • <SAME POSITION>

Simply put it, Hearthstone is by far my favorite game of 2014, and it is probably somewhere on my top games of all time list. It is also one of the key reasons why I haven't played more games in 2014 or 2015.

  • <SAME POSITION>

Dark, quirky, weird as hell, and constantly intriguing, Danganronpa 2 is an incredible visual novel made even better with a few added features and surprise twists to the game's class trials.

  • <SAME POSITION>

    (See above)

Well...I like this game for the same reasons as Danganronpa 2, but I liked the sequel a bit more because of the changes it brought to the class trials.

  • <NEW TO THE LIST, BUT I DID PLAY IT IN 2014. THIS WAS MY UNOFFICIAL #11 FROM LAST YEAR>

I always liked The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, but in 2015 I managed to stick with it even longer until I eventually killed Satan, Isaac, ???, and finally Mega Satan. After I unlocked Azazel and continued to find more secrets and went farther down into the basement, I became hooked in a way I quite wasn't in 2014.

  • <LOWER, PREVIOUSLY #4>

It's been a few years since I played a game where it was just fun running around and doing whatever. Using your agility, weapons, and abilities to strike fear and ultimately kill legions of orcs never got old for me.

  • <NEW TO THE LIST, DIDN'T PLAY IN 2014>

The improved loot system, the new abilities, the progression after Level 70, the balance changes, and every other major and subtle change to Diablo III Blizzard made since summer 2013 have made Diablo III better than ever.

  • <LOWER, PREVIOUSLY #5>

Even with a story that was a little bit lacking (or rather a good story that was told not as well as it deserves), the hundreds of function combinations, music, and overall styyyyyyle makes Transistor a great experience from beginning to end.

  • <LOWER, PREVIOUSLY #7>

It feels weird judging this DLC as a standalone piece of content, since I view it as an addendum to The Last of Us proper, especially when compared to the other full sized games on here. However, Left Behind is still an incredible experience, especially when you pair it with the ending of The Last of Us.

  • <LOWER, PREVIOUSLY #6>

Bayonetta 2 is still a beautiful, crazy, and insane game. However, the more I reflect on it, the more I wish the craziness or spectacle matched moments like the Lumen Sage battles, instead of what we ultimately got in Inferno or the ending.

  • <SAME POSITION>

The Hatsune Miku games are a great example of a palette cleanser for me. They are bright, colorful, with catchy music and an overall carefree lightness to everything. Also, years ago I was really into Rock Band and Guitar Hero, so I think I randomly get pulled into rhythm games nowadays.
