@slag: I've played a lot of games this year. But I tend to end up playing games I played before a lot and this year I heavily got into playing my Genesis again for... reasons.
Anyway, this is basically the 10 games that stuck out the most as either horribly bad-disappointing-really good. It's hard to explain much better haha. It's also important for me that they be games I haven't played before in order for them to be added at all.
I had to do a spectrum list because this year there isn't enough games that I think were all that good. What's funny, though, is I do have games in my backlog which would probably round out a better top 10 for the year- I just haven't gotten to them yet.

For anyone still confused, I thought up this handy chart:
1 is the worst game I played this year
2 is a terrible game that I find slightly disappointing
3 is a bad game game that is more disappointing than bad
4 is a game I didn't hate, but I was more disappointed by then anything
5 is a game I was completely disappointed by, but I wouldn't say it was good or bad. It just could have been so much more than it was.
6 is a game that I liked a little but in ways it was more disappointing to me
7 is a game I liked a lot but it was disappointing to me
8 is a game I really liked with only slight disappointment- very minor at this point really
9 is a game I liked a bunch, the downsides are nit picks at this point
10 is the best game I played this year
If that doesn't help I can't explain it any better haha
Edit again: And if the question is really "Why didn't you just do a more traditional list?" I didn't really play 10 games I liked enough to feel they belong on a top ten for the year. That doesn't mean there aren't any. I have a massive back log and to top it off I play a lot of old games all the time. So, I'll probably get to those games in 2016.
