I am a big fan of roguelite games, and there are a variety of good to truly amazing ones spanning many different genres that have come out over the last decade. Heck, 2020 might have been the best year for roguelites yet. Hades, Spelunky 2, Noita, Risk of Rain 2, Monster Train, One Step From Eden, the list goes on.

Developers are continuing to come up with new and quirky ideas for roguelites like Luck Be A Landlord(a deckbuilding slot machine game) and Loop Hero(idk how to describe this. Auto battler with deckbuilding and strategy game elements I guess?). I just can't believe how wide the genre has become. And now people are actually implementing meaningful stories into these games too, which is not something I even realized I wanted until Hades and Children of Morta did it.

Also I really like being able to easily just fire up one of these games when I'm craving some action and know that I'll be done in an hour. Even though I've unlocked everything in Spelunky or The Binding of Isaac, I still get the urge to play a run or two every now and then, and I easily can do it. A lot of more traditional games I'd have to start a new game and then play to the part where the combat gets interesting or I get the weapons I like and that can be a big time investment I'm not willing to make.

Overall these are some of my favorite games of all time, with somewhere between 3-6 of them being in my top ten.

Halo 3 is definitely the pinnacle of the series and is my 2nd favorite game of all time. It's the first time I remember being genuinely excited for a sequel. Forge blew my mind as a kid, and the number of crazy maps and modes people made was amazing. Also the campaign still holds up.

Absolutely agree with everything you said about the game. It's easily the best metroidvania I've ever played and is one my favorite games of all time! I still haven't beat it, but that's only because the dlc has maybe the hardest challenges I've ever seen in a game. I honestly don't know if I'll ever be able to get the true ending. Even if I don't, I still think Hollow Knight is one of the best games ever and might even be "perfect".

I was really disappointed with Bully. I heard people talk that game up for years and I finally watched a streamer play through the game last year. I honestly can't remember hating the writing and humor of any game as much as this one. The gameplay itself was super rough to me. But I think there easily could be a great game if they decided to make another. The small open world was cool, choosing activities to do day to day was fun. Having special events like Halloween and weather changing was cool. Honestly if somebody combined this and the non combat parts of Persona I'd be all in. Especially if it was set at Hogwarts, that would be my dream game.

Wow we have pretty similar tastes it seems aside from a couple things. I think Journey is a little overhyped so it wouldn't make my list. Portal 2 is a wonderful game with no flaws I can remember, but I just don't have a ton passion for it. I haven't played Invisible, Inc. yet , but I remember Austin calling it his favorite game of 2015, so I'll play it eventually. Unfortunately I have a huge backlog of games and shows, so I don't see myself playing it anytime soon. I stupidly decided I'm going to try to get 112% in Hollow Knight so I'll be stuck on that for a while. Currently doing all the boss stuff in Godhome. I wanna die lol

It's a Christmas miracle! I was just thinking about how much I missed Drew and how much I wanted him to return for Super Mario Party Party. Now it's happened and I still can't believe it!

Gotta say this a very unique list. Lots of games from different genres which I always appreciate. Also a list that doesn't have God of War, Red Dead 2, Spider Man, or Smash Bros. Ultimate!? Very crazy. Anyways this was a very enjoyable read, thanks for writing this.
