They are actually working on getting ads into their free version of the podcast, I guess that takes some sort of setup that I know nothing about. I think the key thing folks are missing from this discussion is that with this Patreon, they are able to do what they want. Does what they want look a lot like what's already being done sometimes? Sure. But they have given themselves the freedom to do that, and have lots of free offerings so you don't HAVE to spend money on it. It's also very early on in this business for them and there is so much going on in the back end that we won't see. It's only been just about 5 months. Things are still growing and being put into place. Maybe it's not for you now, maybe you check it out in a few months and see if you like any of the new things. No one is forcing anyone to pay money to them if they don't want to.

@casse1berry: they don't read emails, but as someone else said there is a live monthly Q&A in the discord, and they're fairly active in there on a daily basis as well.

To echo what others have said, I'd say check out what they have available for free. There are perks like patron-only podcasts, streams, polls on what to play, the discord, and a monthly Q&A. The discord is fairly active and the community is fun, though obviously a lot of overlap with this one.

@owlnostic: Which is why I said both it won't help everyone and isn't the same as a front page post. Simply stating that they are talking about it, just not in the most accessible places.

Not that I think this helps EVERYONE but they did send out a newsletter this afternoon with a write-up. Not quite the same as a front page post, but they are putting it out there.

@bigsocrates: And related to all of this - fully expect to have subs fall off and lower as time passes and the initial excitement dies down. Patreon subs fluctuate a lot due to several factors, this high number is not a guaranteed constant.

I think starting off a new format with people they know well and have worked with before makes sense. It'll help them get a feel for what works and what doesn't, and they can expand outward from there.

@roadshell: The core crew isn't going anywhere, and in fact Jeff G said he wants to hire at least another member to the core team.
