Let's You and Me Fight: I wish Rising Thunder Felt Faster

I’m approaching the point where it is entirely possible I have completely lost my goddamn mind, as my fighting game library has expanded further since the last time I checked in a mere two weeks ago—not only did I wind up grabbing Under Night In-Birth, I broke down and grabbed King of Fighters XIII and Yatagaseru, because I figured I was on a roll and might as well keep this train going (it helps that the two of them are like $30 combined). I haven’t spent a ton of time with either, but the little time I’ve spent with KOF has been kind of neat (I am still dicking around with the characters to figure out who I want to focus on—I really like King a lot so far, but who knows where I’ll end up). Plus, KOF’s sprites are gorgeous like woah.

Just look at that. It's GORGEOUS
Just look at that. It's GORGEOUS

Of course, I’ve also been spending a fair amount of time with the newest fighting game to drop recently, which is Rising Thunder. As an admitted novice to this whole fighting games thing (this series started back in May, for reference, so I’ve been focusing on fighting games for the last…four months?), a game like Rising Thunder is aimed directly at me—my execution in most games is solid enough at this point that I can do some basic combos in most of the games I’ve got, but I still run into input errors from time to time (which is partially due to an unfortunate tendency to fall back to mashing when I panic), and Rising Thunder takes input errors out of the equation entirely (well, almost entirely. You can still wind up hitting the wrong button if you aren’t careful (I am not careful)).

So it’s neat, because instead of having to learn the stick motions and such before jumping into trying to learn combos and defensive strategies, you skip directly to the combo/defensive strategy parts. Which means that I’ve been spending plenty of time actually fighting people rather than sitting in the training mode. What I’ve found, unfortunately, is that my heavy anime fighter addiction has caused me to become used to a faster combo system than Rising Thunder seems willing to provide. This isn’t necessarily a knock on Rising Thunder, more of a problem I’ve caused by playing too much goddamn Melty Blood.

I'm tempted to mess around with Chel too

Or at least that was my initial read—I’ve since gone through and played some other “slower” games (USFIV, with whom Rising Thunder shares a not-insignificant bit of DNA, both Yatagaseru and King of Fighters XIII), and on second glance, I think Rising Thunder just feels sluggish in a way other games don’t. It doesn’t help that I’ve mostly been playing as Vlad (VLAD BEST. RUSSIA BEST) , who lacks any kind of a solid dash—a Looney Toons-esque step—though his jetpack does allow for faster air traversal, the only other option is to lumber slowly forward (and no good backdash option either). It’s possible that if I spend some time with other, not Russian robots, I’ll feel like it’s a little faster than I currently do.

Then again, perhaps that is part of the point of this game—if it is for beginners and experts alike, a slower pace does make the learning curve less steep. It’s a little easier to see what’s going on and exactly how it is you fucked up when you fuck up (I do a lot of fucking up), so there’s a perfectly good reason for it to move the way it does. Unfortunately, it also tends to leave me wanting to play something a little faster—which is basically any game that isn’t Rising Thunder (well, maybe Mortal Kombat X feels slower, but I don’t think so. It’s been a while since I played any MKX).

Bear in mind, this is an alpha—so it’s not like the game is set in stone by any means. They’ll continue to tweak the game engine, and tighten the controls even more, and maybe that sluggishness I’m feeling will disappear. I hope so, because I like just about everything about the game—I just wish it felt a little faster, is all.

I actually streamed a good chunk of me playing Rising Thunder last week, if you want hard photographic evidence of my hideous Vlad game. It's below.

I'm not sure what you mean with slow/sluggish in this post. Do you mean the pace and flow of the match is slow, or are the controls and animations unresponsive?

Btw you might want to look into mixing the audio a bit better on the stream if you haven't already. You are a little hard to hear. :P

EDIT: Are you european? I've been wanting to play UNIEL because it looks cool, but I got set too far behind the online community by focusing on USF4 instead. Could be cool to learn with someone else that doesn't have deep knowledge of the game yet.

@tobbrobb: It's the general pace of matches I'm talking about specifically--it just feels...sluggish in comparison to other fighting games (even other fighting games I think are slow, like MKX). The controls have been pretty responsive for me so far.

Unfortunately, I'm not European, so i doubt we could rumble in UNIEL.

(The audio gets better--I fired OBS up on a whim when I started, and my mic was on the floor for like the first 20 minutes.)

I'm a Carbon V Dauntless and I've been using the Kinetic Deflect exclusively. Its all chain combos over here. Its definitely a slow-paced game when compared to any airdashers or even KoF, but I feel like matches actually go by pretty quick. I actually really like how simplified the options and controls are in RT. Its getting me to the point where I have pay attention and play footsies way quicker than any other fighting games has. I feel like I have a better grasp of it than I do most fighting games. In timings, character options, mechanics and everything. I really appreciate that and I don't feel like speeding it up would really add anything other making it slightly harder.

On the other hand, I prefer fast paced fighting games. I think KoF 13 with all of its hops, jumps, dashes, and rolls make it fun to just move around. Moves come out super fast and its just a generally more of an offensive, in-your-face game. RT just feels more measured and calm in comparison. Right now RT feels the void where I'd normally be practicing/learning a game. Now I just jump in for a couple of matches here and there. Its way less work, which I've come to appreciate after a long day of actual work.

@iamterics: Yeah the pace is just a little slower than I'd like. It's not that matches don't go by quickly, it's just that it feels like not as much happens, if that makes sense. But not having to worry as much about execution and getting to focus on footsies and such right out of the gate, more or less, is undeniably satisfying. It's a nice game to be able to jump into knowing that I have the basics sorted out and I can actually have a proper fight instead of swearing because my 623 came out as a 236 for the millionth goddamn time.

Also yes, rolling and jumping around in KOF 13 is fun as shit, given the like half hour or so of it I've played at this point. I think I could really get into KOF once I spend a little more time with it.

@l1ghtn1n: Yeah I feel like maybe I just need to bid Vlad adieu for a bit and try out some of the faster fighters in order to get more into the game. I'd played around with Edge a little but Vlad won me more matches (in that he won me any at all), so I've been sticking with him. Probably not the best idea.

Is KOF's netcode shitty? I was hoping desperately the Steam edition had sorted that problem out. I still need to give it a proper shakedown, but yeah I think I'm going to stick with King as my going concern and pick up another two once I'm comfortable with her (one of those two will be Terry, because come on of course it will be). I think I read somewhere that SNK had been bought by a Chinese consortium (ah, I was right) that seems to be big on the MULTIMEDIA IP thing, so maybe we will see a sequel (but maybe later enough that I won't have completely wasted my money picking up XIII) after all. Of course it might turn out to be like Konami's new Silent Hill offering... but I'm choosing to be positive about this development for once in my life.

@l1ghtn1n: My initial fumbling movements toward a team was King/Terry/some army lady with charge moves who I don't remember the name of right now, but I will probably change things up as I try out other stuff.
