You cant really blame Microsoft. Its like the same problem Blizzard has with World of Warcraft. Its all down to users being stupid with their account information.

Pretty sure most of the affected were not stupid with their information. Thanks for the assumption though.

It has been far too long for this game to be any good. I'm sure it'll be a game but the story behind it feels a lot like Gran Tursimo 5.

I hope it isn't the case, though. I fucking loved both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.

I hope its not the case. I agree that this kinda news doesn't fill me with great thoughts on the state of the project. But we know so little, very up in the air. I also hope that after this project we have not "lost" Mr. Ueda to developing games for the web.

But too long to be any good? Feels like Gran Turismo 5? No way. I can't argue over whether or not you liked the game. But its not the best analogy, because Gran Turismo is a top tier racing game. It's not a weird corner of the vg world only enjoyed by brand loyalists. Plenty of car enthusiasts and PS3 owners play. If it was bad, well most everyone would have moved on by now (I know I would have). Plenty didn't pick it up or like it, but I think that has little to do with the development length...has more to do with their decisions during their lengthy development. Ultimately if they were more transparent about what the finished software was going to be and listened to feedback from the community (like they are doing now). They would have spent their time to develop something better.

Basically I'm just saying: time alone doesn't equal a bad product. I mean would you think the same for games like SWTOR, RAGE, or Guild Wars 2?

Also yo, you don't have to answer and I hope I don't come off as defensive asshole.

Nice post, and thanks for sharing. I was thinking about this game tonight and it was nice to read your now old preview impressions. Xenoblade really is a beautiful looking RPG.

I still hope that Nintendo of America brings out. The region locking on Nintendo systems is a giant bummer.

@jhsauls:

This happened to me on Oct. 1st and I didn't find out until today when I was going to boot up Forza 4 or Gears of War 3 for a bit. Fortunately for me the CC I had on my account was expired. So only my points were spent on what I assume was Fifa '12. I found this thread by Google searching, go figure. But the most I have read about this hack was on this blog:

http://thegooster.wordpress.com/2011/09/28/xbox-live-users-hacked-victims-in-the-name-of-eas-fifa-dlc/

I was able to recover the account myself and change my password. So I'll have to call MS support to get my points refunded still and hopefully I can avoid the 25 day lock that MS support puts on hacked accounts for "investigation".

Looks like this happened with Fifa 2011 and is happening again with Fifa 2012. If there is a security hole associated with the Fifa games it seems to have not been closed.

Straight ridiculous.

"...I'd love to see Giant Bomb run with this... Suggestion is it seems to be a known issue whereby some kind of flaw between EA and MS Servers is causing some kind of security flaw ?..."

Patrick just tweeted the following:

If you or someone you know had their Xbox Live account compromised recently, please email me with details: patrick@giantbomb.com

After seeing the large amount of people affected via recent tweets and forum posts by this hack when researching it (where the account is compromised and the hacker plays Fifa). I was not pleased to see there is no company messaging about whats going on from either MS or EA. After sharing my story this morning to co-workers, one co-worker decided to log in to live to double check her account because she had not logged in for a couple of weeks. She immediately found that she had been hacked, points spent, and the last game played was Fifa '12. That's when I knew people needed to be made aware.

So I emailed Patrick earlier this afternoon that there might be a story here, if not -- people at least need to know about it. The trend of Fifa in all this cannot be ignored. Was stoked to see his reply and tweet for more info after my mail. Seriously folks, send him what you know! Don't leave it up to EA & MS to take action first, they obviously are oblivious to the trend or don't give a shit.

All the info was put up ont he PlayStation.Blog: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/10/05/gran-turismo-5-new-free-updates-dlc-and-price-drop/

I wonder if the timing for this announcement was intentionally supposed to be in sync with Forza 4's release. As I would have rather had this update sooner.

@Devil240Z: @Maluvin:

Mid race saving is confirmed!

I hope Giant Bomb revisits the game or puts up a news post about the Spec 2 update. GT5 was never the pile of shit that a lot of posters on this site think it is. Its a bummer that not more people are impressed or aware of how Polyphony Digital has supported GT5. That kind of stuff should be applauded...sure its not on the level of Valve, but they are not mending something broken with incremental updates either (like with the valiant efforts of the developers working on FFXIV). Yes there will be DLC now but I've been happy with the constant updates. A lot more than I am right now about the season pass stuff with Forza 4, I'm already getting the LCE edition to get the "full" game. Christ!

@buckybitsaid:

Don't be fooled. Saying it is a 'driver issue' is putting the blame on AMD & NVIDIA. IMHO, it's a id engine / megatexture tech issue instead, because of GPU virtual texturing?

see Siggraph 2009 talk by J.M.P van Waveren, Senior Programmer id Software

(link to pdf file! 4MB)

dynamically streaming texture and LOD (Level of Detail)

Link is broken :(

Also I don't think we are being fooled. Why would they be telling us to wait on drivers then vs. patches? They would be in a lot of trouble if this is really the case. Also even Carmack is tweeting for people to get the latest drivers; http://twitter.com/#!/ID_AA_Carmack

@wolf_blitzer85: Sorry man but I'm going to shoot that comment down. You're clearly speaking from an uninformed position.

I guarantee this wasn't "missed" by the testers. They brought it up, it was shot down higher up the chain. QA departments in every company everywhere have to struggle against business and design decisions in order to get issues addressed.

If you're going to put the blame on some one I'd look at Bethesda or higher up the chain at ID and of course ATI may not be completely guilt free in this as well. It's not like they're known for being on the ball lately.

+1 to this. Beat me to it, but you forgot this comment;

@InternetDetective said:

How did they not know about these problems, did the play tester not notice?

I am 99% sure all the issues are sitting on a bug data base right now.

If this is truly just a driver issue then a driver update is going to fix it, I hope there is a combo of further optimization in support of better drivers. Terrible that it has released this way though...but we don't know how it happened. Maybe id brought these issues up with AMD or Zenimax/Bethesda but they pushed the current version anyways.

PC will be the best version eventually. I think now more than ever id Software should deliver on the "maybes" Carmack talked about during his keynote at QuakeCon 2011. Such as a high resolution texture pack and what not.

@wolf_blitzer85said:

If this is how game development works, then things are just going to get worse. I would think that the QA (especially for bigger games) would have a stronger pull in the development process since I would also think that the team would ideally want to put out a fully working game. I also wasn't trying to put the blame on anyone in particular either. I'm just amazed that this technical issue managed to make it out into the open, especially when the textures are a big draw to the game.

That is how it works, mostly, haha. QA has little pull because they are not designing, developing, etc. so the “value” of anything brought up falls in someone else's capable hands to make a decision on changes or fixes. Personally everywhere I have been, QA do their damndest to stop the bugs before they get to you, trust me.

It is still kind of amazing how this got out in the open right? I agree with you there. Like I said earlier in this post we have no idea where the fuck-ups began. Maybe AMD didn't even reply to id's emails.

@James0890: Because Rage is an exclusively OpenGL game. I can't remember the last time a AAA titles used OpenGL instead of DirectX's Direct3D.

I can't remember either maybe pre-2005. Despite the problems so far I am glad it is OpenGL 4.2. Hey maybe there will be linux build because why not and id Software traditionally does one.
