I can't imagine the gameplay between these two will be extremely different, but everything else aside, I'm very interested to see how the fanbase for these two games grows over the next few months based on the openness of the developers. It could be just me, but it seems like more people (at the moment) are interested in Overwatch, but Blizzard is keeping that beta veeerryy closed and has not announced a release date. Not as many people seem interested in Battleborn, but 2K is inviting more people to play their beta, which starts tomorrow, and has announced a release date of February 9, 2016.
So I wonder if the sheer act of allowing lots of people to play, rather than allowing lots of people to watch select streamers and journalists play, will garner Battleborn some good will simply by being in the right place at the right time.
With Hearthstone and Heroes o' the Storm previously, and now Overwatch, Blizzard has taken to promoting games during their beta and alpha tests crazy hard. Huge foci are placed on community involvement, but with no way to go buy the games at that time and no release date to count down to, that relentless promotion only serves to frustrate a large part of the fanbase. Blizzard even had a huge Heroes tournament, "Heroes of the Dorm," that was covered on ESPN, while the game was still in closed beta.
Testing games that have heavy online pvp elements is absolutely crucial, but unyielding promotion for games that neither the RNG gods nor Blizzard selected you to play makes it hard to want to engage with what's happening. It's fine to not be invited to beta test a game like this, but don't stuff it down my throat that there are tournaments, community events, and a bunch of streamers getting to play, while I can't.
