2019 GOTY

  • I love how unique this game is, and nostalgic, of course. The core plot is fascinating and takes you in unexpected directions. The worldbuilding is great, you could spend ages just looking at the insane things characters have uploaded. Considering most interactions are limited to text and pixelated images the characterisation is very impressive.

  • I'm in the same place many other people have found themselves with SMM2. I think it's a great game. I didn't get to play the original but I'm confident it's an improvement. I bought a Switch mainly to play it and I don't regret it, I was very keen to get into it while it still felt active, but ultimately I was disappointed that it didn't have the same energy around it as the first game.

Perhaps no fault of it's own, just the product of the timing of it's release and the many great games which released this year.

Halo is finally returning to PC and... I seem to suck at it more than I remember.

Reach looks really nice, I had some hitching playing co-op but that's probably just me. I'm hoping I'll prove better in competetive when 1, 2 and 3 release.

I do feel MUA 3 is a bit outdated, it's very similar to previous entries, but I had fun with it and I'm hoping to complete the story and try the DLC characters next year.

There's something in the background of Death Stranding, perhaps the concept of a sci-fi trucking simulator, which really appeals to me. But Kojima can't help being Kojima and the interesting parts of the game seem to be held back by poorly thought through stealth mechanics and an excessively complex and bizarre story.

Having played a lot of Pokémon Go in 2019 I was somewhat surprised by how quickly I lost interest in this. It's apparent that not much has changed in mainline Pokémon games over the last 20 years.
