@drgasm: Son, I'm sorry, but it's been four months, and you're outside the Statute of Limitations for Petty Board Disputes. Any further grievances will have to be submitted in the form of passive-aggressive subtweets.
Dan, you brought so much energy and so many great ideas to the site. I'll really miss your output here, but I'm also glad you got a position in an industry you love. Your path through life has led not only to great content that brightens so many people's days but to extraordinary personal fulfillment, so you're clearly on to something a lot of us are missing. In your own way, and in perhaps the most crucial ways, you're one of the wisest people out there. Keep on being you.
Big respect to Ben for putting together such a well-considered argument for Disco Elysium. He put real hard work in there, being tireless and thorough and capably deflecting opposing arguments while being respectful, and it paid off. Many of the advocates of this title could learn a lot from him. I actually feel I want to give the game a try now.
(Re: Missing categories: I think Best Moment or Sequence is a big loss; it's good for the medium to relive and provide powerful arguments from strong debaters for the moments where video games can just make you feel great. I also think the Most Disappointing category is useful in pointing out harmful trends that need correction; I understand if the goal is to cut out "negative" categories, but I think one can stand.)
I really enjoy this format. It allows the team to discuss the year's games and gather their thoughts before the knives come out, and it gives titles that wouldn't be nominated a moment in the spotlight. It's an enjoyable, thoughtful wrap-up to the year, and while I also miss the comedy categories, I think this is overall an improvement.
I used one of the pinball maps Bakalar linked and discovered that there was a Creature from the Black Lagoon machine five miles from me! …Then I remembered that the campsite had closed down a few years ago. Wonder what happened to the machine.
Lunar: The Silver Star will always be remarkable to me for an utterly bizarre but remarkably successful effort within the fanbase to replace all mentions of part of the game's story with a fan-written plot, complete with descriptions of phantom cutscenes that were never in the game. I have to wonder if the retranslation Jeff mentioned is a legit effort or an extension of that nonsense.
Bless Jason for requesting that song, which is, mercifully, inviolable.
