I will endure Sonic Heroes for charity next month!

Click here to flog Jeff with Sanic help us raise money for Pencils of Promise!

Sonic Heroes is a game I have never played! I've actually not played any 3D Sonic, and have only finished Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to boot. Here are the things I know about Sonic Forces.

Sonic (center) flanked by two of his friends, *checks notes* Pinky and Bubsy.
Sonic (center) flanked by two of his friends, *checks notes* Pinky and Bubsy.
  1. Sonic the Hedgehog makes a cameo appearance as Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic Heroes.
  2. It also has Big the Cat in it.
  3. There are four teams of players, each of which has one (1) tank, one (1) DPS, and one (1) cleric.
  4. The PS2 port of Sonic Heroes is apparently v.bad so I'm going with the GameCube release. I'd go Xbox but I don't want to buy Xbox S-video cables.
  5. Sonic Heroes serves as something of a bridge between the design decisions of Sonic Adventure and SA2, and the proper "dark age" games like Sonic '06 and the Wii titles.
  6. Please, please don't correct me.

I'm going in blind and am asking for your help! You see, I'm trying to raise $300 for Pencils of Promise to help the Giant Bomb Community Endurance Run meet our fundraising goal of $7500. That's enough to fund one hundred students in developing countries! It's an admirable enough goal that I'm getting back into the fray of this streaming thing! And the best part is, I am enlisting you to help determine how this will go for me!

The first person who donates to my fundraising page gets to decide my first team (Sonic, Dark, Rose, or Chaotix), and throughout the run I'll be giving you folks a chance to determine which team is up next. Furthermore, I've decided to set out some proper mile markers for this stream to make things simple:

  • At $60, I will finish the game with one team.
  • At $120, I will finish the game with a second team.
  • At $180, I will finish the game with a third team.
  • At $240, I will finish the game with all four teams.
  • If I can hit my personal fundraising goal of $300, enough to fund four Pencils of Promise students, I will enter Infinite Hyper Sonic Heroes Mode: I will not be allowed to stop playing Sonic Heroes until I finish all four teams or the event ends.

That's right, I've blocked out a specific time to cut things off on 21 April but if you can push me to my goal, the Sonic will not end for me. Sonic will be forever. To keep things funky fresh, I'm also going to add in some musical bonuses:

  • Every time I receive a donation, I will listen to the entirety of "Sonic Heroes" by Crush 40.
  • For every donation of $50, I will sing a karaoke rendition of a song from the hit video game series "Sonic the Hedgehog", including your requests.

Furthermore, I have decided to throw down the gauntlet to you all. You have the chance to push my stream into madness:

  • If I can double my fundraising goal and raise $600, MY STREAM WILL FALL INTO SHADOW.
HE IS COMING. HE IS UNAVOIDABLE. HE MADE SHREK PREGNANT ACCORDING TO GOOGLE IMAGES.
HE IS COMING. HE IS UNAVOIDABLE. HE MADE SHREK PREGNANT ACCORDING TO GOOGLE IMAGES.

What's in it for you, though, besides seeing me wither in the presence of so many hedgehogs and the like?

Will post an actual photo of my copy but this is pretty damn close.

  • All donors of $5 or more will be entered into a drawing for a complete in box copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Collector's Edition. NTSC, box is not mint, but otherwise complete and shipped to anywhere in the world.
  • All donors regardless of amount will be entered into a drawing for one of two $50 gift vouchers to the games service of your choice (Steam, PSN, XBL, Nintendo eShop).
  • All donors also have the satisfaction of knowing they have contributed to a charity that uses 100% of their donation proceeds for direct services in the form of student funding, training teachers, building schools, and providing sanitary equipment. This is a pretty remarkable charity, and we are proud to support them with these events.

Right now my plan is to kick things off on 20 April 2018 at 2100 PST with Incredible Crisis, in tribute to the great Ryan Davis. Then come Saturday morning it's Sonic time and that will probably be my whole weekend. I look forward to entertaining you guys and hope you'll swing by for what should be some lighthearted goofs amidst @zombiepie and @thatpinguino playing a Very Good Final Fantasy Game for twelve hours. See you then!

Sonic Heroes is one of those games from my youth that I always expect to enjoy but it always glitches out in some crazy way. But I must stress that there IS fun to be had, if you're lucky enough.

As someone who played a decent amount of Sonic Heroes when it was hot and relevant, I think you might be in the running for having a worse time than ZombiePie and Pinguino's Final Fantasy XIII endurance hell.

Haven't played Sonic Heroes since I rented it from a Blockbuster when I was a kid. I remember liking it...! Also, I unironically think the Team Chaotix theme is fucking great (which is diametrically opposed to their mission objectives in each of the levels; I remember hating them). I love all the cheesy-as-hell Sonic tracks with vocals.

Sonic Heroes is a strange game from my youth hood where even though I played a lot of it, I still didn’t like it. I guess I was just eager to see those endings? Anyways, Best wishes to you enduring this for charity man!

Given that the game will be in my life for 20 hours or more next month, I hope I can find and document all the fun therein. If the game is anything like SA1 and 2 I guess I can look forward to a lot of clipping and collision?

I'm certainly worse off than those two, because FFXIII is a good game and they'll likely only play the good parts (i.e. until you get to Pulse and the game gets rid of all direction). I will hang my hat on this perspective.

For the humble cost of one American dollar, YOU can make sure I experience these 32X castoffs first. I am also actively considering baking in some Sonic karaoke into this thing, up to and including playing bass alongside Crush 40 YouTube videos.
