@borgmaster: Wait, are you telling me after he left Journey, Steve Perry became a sci-fi writer?

No. I only had an OG Gameboy as a kid, but still kinda feel like I grew up with Nintendo. Would play NES/SNES/N64 at friends houses, and would swap a friend's N64 for our PlayStation once in a while. Wasn't until young-adulthood when the Gamecube came out that I consistently got Nintendo consoles.

I had a Gamecube and loved it. Probably my most played retro console to this day. But the PS2 won this fight. XBox and GC both pulled out some heavy hitters, but the PS2 has everything you could possibly want. Great system with a huge library. No genre was left out.

I think in general, video games buck the trend of sequels getting worse. Usually the second and third entry fix what didn't work in the first, and improve on what did.

But you specifically pointed out "stories", and in that case it tends to be a more mixed bag along the same lines as other media. Someone brought up Portal, which I would say illustrates both these points. Portal 2 is a bigger and better game than the first, but the story and humor are not as well written. In another medium, it would be a disappointment, but better gameplay offsets weaker storytelling in games.

@tokot: Yeah it really does sound like Def Jam: Fight for New York. The girl named Electra is played by Carmen Electra, and the dude you fight in the ring of fire at the end is Snoop Dog. The whole cast is famous/semi-famous hip-hop stars of the 90's-00's. And Henry Rollins. He's the trainer that helps you level up.

I actually skipped this series due to the always online DRM. After 9 long years, my stubbornness has finally paid off. Mwahahaha!

Naw, this just sucks. Sorry to anyone who was a fan of this game.

You can totally take breaks from a game and still call it a masterpiece, especially long-ass RPGs or open-world games. A game can be great fun, but that doesn't mean you'll want to play it for 100 hours straight. I jump between many different experiences depending on my mood, and sometimes it can months/years before I'm in the mood to grind again. Here are a few personal examples:

Mirror's Edge Catalyst and Control both took me over a year to beat even though I only clocked in about 30hrs total playtime each. I get distracted easily.

Kingdoms of Amalur. Started 2013 - finished 2021. Gets repetitive, but still an awesome game. Plus I had a kid in 2015.

2014, played most of the way through Saint's Row 4, but stopped near the end. It's on my list, I'll get to it.

Ocarina of time. Started 2005. Took a break 2006. Got back into it in 2008, but stopped close to the end. 2012 forgot I never finished the game. 2021 remembered I never finished the game. 2023 still haven't finished the game. Whatever, I say it's a masterpiece and will complete it one of these days.

@gtxforza: It's why Daytona and Cruiz'n were such big hits back in the day. Dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs. The games would be better if they had dinosaurs.
