What's wrong with being charged for what something is worth? I'm one of the lucky ones to be already in a great University, borrowing 'only' at the current levels. I come from an extremely average London household, have worked hard for my academic career so far, and I have faith that my degree and my work will increase my earning potential VASTLY beyond the point where paying back my student loans over a period of many years matters.
What caused this problem we're in today was the past Labour Government seeking to put everyone through some sort of university education, and with the student loan repayment thresholds being what they are, many MANY people who will never earn more than the required amount for them to start paying back the money borrowed who have just essentially had a few years boozing and studying some shit degree at some shitpan university.
With our current system most decent universities (we're talking Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Manchester, Durham) have the homegrown students' educations funded by overseas students anyway..
