Return to New York

VMG X61 NKG

I wanted to make a level themed after the original Mario Bros. The idea is that Mario comes back after being away in the Mushroom Kingdom. It's in the SMB1 style and I tried using the airship tileset to evoke the streets of New York. There's a hub area that looks like the original Mario Bros level and you can go to 4 sub areas in any order. The intro theme plays at the start.

Big Time Forest

5KD MT0 5RG

This is my first level in the SMB1 style that revolves around the mega mushroom and big things.

@netherdiver: I feel as though we can't completely discount Kojima's ability to finally grow as a writer. The dialogue in GZ is actually good (even if some of the delivery leaves something to be desired), at least in my opninion. It's concise writing, Snake isn't repeating everything that's said to him and there is none of Drew's favourite "Huh, wha, oof, haa" stuff.

The actual direction of the cutscenes has also improved tremendously, though a lot of that can be chalked up to the FOX engine. A lot of games would not be able to handle something like the MB destruction scene in-engine all in a single tracking shot.

Edit: Anyway, I guess time will (soon) tell what the final product is going to be like. I'm sure any major issues will be covered extensively by some review sites.

This is true, I guess I never paid much mind to the dialogue and writing in GZ because I was too enamored with the gameplay. I figured there was less dialogue because it was a smaller game.

@netherdiver: I agree 100%.

Also: the disturbing parts were kind of 'hidden' in GZ. I'm sure 90% of the people didn't even take notice of the whole rape part. You have to dig for it; first find the cassette and then play the thing. I suspect TPP will handle things the same way; you probably will find some disturbing details if you want to.

But again, that's pure speculation until the game's released.

Eh, there's that scene at the end of GZ. But, I don't think it was done horribly. You either hate it or you don't mind it, I guess.

If it's a question of quality, like you're worried if the writing will be terrible and the game play won't be good enough to make it worth while, you should wait until reviews are out until you buy the game.

He handles the jokey parts of the game immaturely, because that's the point of ass-shots and seeing through clothes. As someone else has brought up, these kinds of jokes are accepted in a lot of Japanese media, and I think we should respect that different cultures can make light of plenty of things that we can find offensive.

I think we just have to chalk this up to different opinions because I thought the rapey and "mature" stuff in ground zeroes was handled fine. Yes, it was disturbing.. but that's the point right? Was it poorly written? How do you write disturbing scenes correctly? Yes, I have issues with the general writing and dialogue in Metal Gear the same way I can't stand most english anime dubs (Man, if you don't think Metal Gear is anime, you need to watch some damn anime). But I think if you've gone to the point where you're playing the fifth game in the series, you're probably used to it anyway.

I can understand that people want to enjoy the rest of the game without it being ruined but there are ways around that. I think you just have to ask yourself if it's worth it to skip those parts of the game to experience the rest of the game.
