Which console has the best games over the holiday season?

Taking a look over the holiday season releases, being between now and March next year (yeah, it is a long season), I thought I would take a detailed look to see which console would be attracting the most interest for me.  True, I have a Wii and 360 only, I decided that taking a look at the PS3 would be a worthwhile exercise to see if it would be worth the while spending $500 on one based on the games that are exclusive.

I have broken the games into 3 groups, being those which I am certain to get, those which interest me enough to see how they come out or get cheaper later and those which I just don't care about.  For the sake of keeping things simple, all games that just look cheap and generic have been ignored.  Here we go:

No Caption Provided

 Must have games:
  1. Harvest Moon: Animal Parade
  2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  3. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
  4. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
  5. Arc Rise Fantasia
  6. Fragile: Farewell Ruins of the Moon

Let's see how these turn out & those I will buy cheap later:
  1. A Boy & His Blob  ........................ looks sweet.
  2. Band Hero (also 360 & PS3) ........................ do we have enough band games already?
  3. Chaotic (also 360 & PS3) ....................... no idea, but I like strategy.
  4. LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues (also 360 & PS3) ............................ I didn't really play the first all that much.
  5. LEGO Rockband ............................. as long as it is compatible with Guitar Hero instruments, then yes, at a price.
  6. Rabbids Go Home ............................. no Rayman means a better game for me.
  7. Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles ..........................  I loved the first and I have a lot of fun with on-rails shooters.
  8. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories ............................ never played one and this may be a good place to start.
  9. LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 ............................. could this be a good Harry Potter game for a change?
  10. Sakura Wars, So Long My Love ........................ I am intrigued and I love anime.
  11. Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces ............................ this looks very good as an Ace Combat style game.
  12. Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars ............................ not a big fighting game player, but this could be one I like.
  13. Red Steel 2 .................................. this will probably go in the must have list if the wii motion+ stuff works out and it looks brilliant.
  14. Sin & Punishment 2 .............................. another one with much potential.
  15. Trauma Team .............................. I enjoyed the first 2, so I am hopeful that this does something a bit different.
  16. Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing (also 360 & PS3) ............................ I want this to be Mario Kart good, but I am not optimistic.
  17. Lord of teh Rings: Aragon's Quest .............................. as long as it isn't too kiddy, this could be good.

Not interested:
  1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ................................  war games don't interest me.
  2. Drawn to Life: Next Chapter .............................  looks too simple.
  3. Jurassic: Lost Island (also 360 & PS3) .......................... I am sure it will be crap.
  4. Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 ..............................  have the first, don't need any more.
  5. Need For Speed: Nitro ................................   car racing on the Wii?  No thanks.
  6. Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage ..............................  I want 1080  or a new SSX.
  7. Tony Hawk Ride (also 360 & PS3) .......................... I am over Tony Hawk games.
  8. Guitar Hero: Van Halen .........................  oh lord no, horrible music.
  9. Super Monkey Ball Step & Roll .............................. I am over the monkey stuff, give me a new Billy Hatcher instead.
Conclusion:
6 must have games is pretty good for a single console and some of those in the second list show great potential.  Certainly enough to stop any dust collecting on the Wii.

Must have games:
  1.  Resonance of Fate .......................................... an RPG by Tri-Ace< yes, I am there and my faith in them puts it on my must have list.

Let's see how these turn out & those I will buy cheap later:
Assassin's Creed II .......................... didn't really play much of the first, so more likely a cheap buy much later.
  • Dragon Age: Origins ........................... it is an RPG, so I am interested to see how it plays.
  • Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City ................................ barely played IV, so it will wait for a very cheap price.
  • Left for Dead 2 ................................. it's banned anyway, but it seems like a cheap game later for me, if it ever gets a release.
  • Splatter House ................................ I know nothing, but the name sounds gruesome enough.
  • Bayonetta ............................ looks and sounds pretty good, so I will keep an eye on this.
  • Dark Void ........................... sci-fi, so maybe it will be good.
  • Divinity II: Ego Draconis .......................... this sounds pretty good and it is an RPG, so one to keep a close eye on.
  • Majesty 2: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim .......................... a strategy game that could be okay, but it kind of looks cheap.
  • Mass Effect 2 .................................. didn't like the first as much as I wanted to, but who knows.
  • Aliens Vs Predator ............................... I want an Aliens game that I enjoy, so here's hoping.
  • Bioshock 2 .............................. I kind of liked the first, but I have problems with FPS, so it is likely to be a cheap game later.
  • Lost Planet 2 .................................. I want this to be good, but am not overly optimistic.      R.U.S.E. ................................... it's an RTS, so I am very interested.  Singularity ................................... maybe this could interest me.
  • Two Worlds 2 .................................. stupid name, but as an RPG, I am hoping it is better than the first.
  • Dead Rising 2 .............................. didn't play the first, but I will keep an open mind.
  • Front Mission Evolved ....................................... I am hopeful that this will be a load of fun.
  • Supreme Commander 2 .................................... more RTS, so I am interested, even though on a home console.
  • Nier ................................ it is a Square-Enix game, so I am looking forward to it.
  • Alpha Protocol ................................. looks potentially appealing to me.

  •  Not interested:
    1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 .......................... just not interest in war games.
    Rogue Warrior .............................. looks boring.
  • The Saboteur ................................ looks boring.
  • Army of Two: The 40th Day ......................... looks really boring.
  • Darksiders ............................. looks uninteresting.
  • Heist ........................... looks very boring.
  • Champions Online ............................. if it needs online, then I am out.
  • Dante's Inferno ............................... just does nothing for me.
  • Dead to Rights: Retribution ............................... looks boring.
  • Just Cause 2 .............................. not for me.
  • Mafia II ................................ didn't care about the first.
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction ............................. NOT interested.
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 ................................. yawn, another war game.
  • Red Dead Redemption ............................. western cowboy game, no thanks.
  • Highlander ................................. not interested in the franchise.
  •
    Conclusion:
Only one must have leaves the 360 RRoD unlikely, but there is ome potential in the 20 games I will consider or buy later.  Too many war, shooter or action games for my taste.

    No Caption Provided

     On the 360 anyway:
    Assassin's Creed II
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
    Dragon Age: Origins
    Splatter House
    Bayonetta
    Dark Void
Star Ocean: The Last Hope International ........................ unless it is really different to the 360 game.
    Aliens Vs. Predator
    Bioshock 2
    Lost Planet 2
    R.U.S.E.
    Singularity
    Two Worlds 2
    Dead Rising 2
    Front Mission Evolved
    Nier
    Resonance of Faith
    Alpha Protocol

    Must have games:
    1. White Knight Chronicles .................................. an RPG that looks stunning.

Let's see how these turn out & those I will buy cheap later:
    1. Heavy Rain .............................. looks good, but not really my thing, but certainly worth a look.
    2. Gran Turismo 5 .................................... I am not paying full price for a racing game, but eventually, I am sure I will have a lot of fun with this.
    3. Last Rebellion ..................................... it is an RPG from Japan, and I know nothing else, but still interested.

    Not interested:
    1. Buzz Quiz World ............................... not interested in the franchise.
    2. God of War Collection .............................. have the first and never played it, plus the PSP game didn't do anything for me, so no.
    3. SingStar Latino ...................................... oh lord NO.
    4. MAG ................................ online action with 256 players?  Not for me i the slightest.

    Conclusion:
Not enough to push me over the line into buying one yet, but it is getting there, one game at a time  ^_^

    In closing:
Most of my gaming fun into the first quarter of next year is still coming fro the Wii and most of my 360 gaming is still in the clearance or price reduced section.

Feel free to critique my observations, but remember this is based on personal tastes and clearly, I am not a shooting kind of gamer.  Also, feel free to let me know what interests you as I am sure we can have a decent conversation about it.

Well, I would say, the 360 has better games but when it comes to graphics, I would have to say that the PS3 takes that trophy home.

@oldschool: Well, mainly just Splinter Cell: Conviction, Modern Warfare 2, and Red Dead Redemption. I understand though. You're not into war games, probably not into action spy games, and I'm not big on westerns myself. My main interest in Red Dead Redemption is the fact that Rockstar is making it. Plus I think it looks pretty awesome from what we've seen so far. No biggie, though. Everyone has their own tastes.

Splinter Cell is one I really wouldn't enjoy at all.  I just can't take to those games at all and I have tried them.  Modern Warfare could be something i might try one day, but it is too far down my list to realistically believe I will ever get.  I tried Gun and didn't really enjoy it, and GTA isn't my thing (although I enjoyed Bully), so I can't see Red Dead getting into me.

I like the fact that we have diverse tastes in games, otherwise we wouldn't have a great variety to choose from and if I was sensitive about my tastes in games, I wouldn't post them.

I don't really know I agree with that (except the better graphics bit, but it doesn't matter).  When you strip out the multi platform games, is the 360 really better?  I would say it is even and more a matter of taste.  I would be all over the PS3 if I had one and the 360 would become the red headed stepchild of my house  ^-^

Complete and thorough ignoring of the potential and quality on the Wii in the comments. Surprise, surprise.

You should take a closer look at A Boy And His Blob, oldschool. It is definatly a must-have, it's just that good.

No doubt I will Meowayne, but I still have a long list ahead of it.  Maybe if Santa is good to me  ^-^
I just picked up Harvest Moon Tree of Tranquilty as it has just got a PAL release, and keeping with the theme of games with shit graphics on shit consoles, I just got a new and cheap copy of Soul Nomad for my PS2 and I look forward to many hours of adorable SRPG fun.  I am such a luddite  :-)

You lost me at Two Worlds 2.  I'll admit investing way too much time into the first one, but I can't see myself falling for that one again.  Especially not over something like The Saboteur or Alpha Protocol.

Alpha Protocol, Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain are the only upcoming games I am truly excited about.  Heavy Rain especially, considering I loved what Quantic Dream did with Indigo Prophecy.  Hopefully this game won't go south halfway through like Indigo Prophecy did, as well.

I've been hearing a lot of talk about White Knight Chronicles, which prompted me to look into it... and I was a little disappointed with what I saw.  I think that one will be a rental.

Other than that, nothing else really has me interested... Well, except for Left 4 Dead 2, of course.  That's a must have, as far as I'm concerned.  I also love Modern Warfare, but I can wait a bit on that one.

I can't really decide which one since the 360 is still going strong, the PS3 eventually got a great boost with the Slim along with Uncharted 2, and the Wii's got some great titles coming soon. I would say PS3 since that's the one console I playing with mostly but I plan to play my Wii more. That aside, the PC may have not as many games in comparison to consoles but we've had some good fun with games like Torchlight.

@trophyhunter: Call me crazy but I actually hate Ratchet and Clank. The series is so dull and uninspiring, and lacks charm. But that's just me. I tried the new Crack in Time demo and was unimpressed with almost every aspect of the game.

Uncharted 2 is the same old same old. Others are amazed because it's the latest and greatest shooter, but in two years, it will be surpassed by the next latest shooter. Fortunately for me, I can see through the hype.

    Demon's Souls looks somewhat promising.

Overall, I'm not impressed with Sony's line up. I'm not even excited for God of War 3. I tried the demo. The cut scenes are great, but the beat-em-up style gameplay is too shallow for me. Not too impressed.

Haha, I'm wondering what's happening to me. Over time, I'm losing my enthusiasm for video games... I'm starting to grow bored with most of the genres and franchises I grew up loving.... Am I just growing up, or is the industry stagnating? I don't know.

Does anyone else here feel like it is quite possible that Uncharted 2 will be one of the easiest GOTYs ever?

Also I don't really understand how anybody could not be excited for Heavy Rain. Have you played Indigo Prophecy? Can you imagine what Quantic Dream will be able to do with a good budget?

I don't think it is stagnating as such, but a real original test id few and far between.  I would put it down to finding other things competing for your attention (sex maybe  :/) and a form of feeling "been there done that."  A lot of stuff from the old days doesn't do it for me as much now as believe it or not, MArio isn't really my thing, except for Mario sport games, not the platformers.

RPG has been my big thing for the last 5 years, I was a late bloomer, and I am far from bored with it yet.

If Resonance of fate is region coding free, I would import it, but I doubt it will (for my PAL 360) and my wait for a PAL copy may be delayed quite a while.  When looking up to 5 months ahead, some will get delayed, but having an NTSC Wii, I won't have to wait for a PAL release.

I only skimmed the thread so dunno if you mentioned it somewhere but Arc Rise for the holiday season? Looking around on the net it seems the release date for any non Japanese version is mid next year. Kind of got me excited. I have been keeping an eye on that game off and on for a while.

What a weird list of games, your must haves are complete 'meh' to me and you haven't listed at all some of best games imo on or coming to the ps3. Ah well I guess what floats one mans boat doesn't necessarily float another.

@oldschool: Then I guess you should be fine with Fragile on an NTSC Wii. The other two don't seem like they'll make it, though.

I notice you say you might be willing to try Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, but you left Calling off the list. I also seem to recall you completely dismissing Siren a while ago and assumed survival horror wasn't your type of game.

I notice you say you might be willing to try Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, but you left Calling off the list. I also seem to recall you completely dismissing Siren a while ago and assumed survival horror wasn't your type of game. "
The new Silent Hill is rather unique in the genre, it's certainly no Siren or Calling. The lack of combat is a plus, it's evade mechanics look great. so does the way the game analyses your responses to questions and scenarios, which in turn effect gameplay. It makes the game fresh enough to warrant a try. He probably like me dislikes horror games that rely on heaviliy excessive violence. I prefer it when fear is induced by something more intelligent.

" Lists like these remind me of how many games I miss each year.  I have a Wii, and I haven't played it since Mario Kart. I'm not a big Wii fan, but your Wii list does look promising, I'll give you that. I may have to dust it off and try something on it. I myself am starting to find the FPS genre to be stale. I use to love them since Halo 1, but there has really been no innovation in the genre recently, besides maybe Borderlands, but I don't like that game.    I mean, 90% of the blockbuster titles now are FPS games. I'm really really sick of it. TBH, I absolutely HATE this era of gaming. They threw out RPG's and adventure games for generic, easy to produce FPS games. I'm really hoping in the next decade that a new genre emerges as king, even though it probably won't happen soon, if ever. "
I also concur with this. Don't get me wrong, I do still like FPS games, but it's unusual when a game like Ratchet & Clank: ACiT actually feels like a breath of fresh air, because even though it's EXTREMELY similar to previous games in the franchise, there's virtually nothing like it anymore.

    Just my $0.02, anyway.

@Linkyshinks: I wouldn't expect it to be those games. I am familiar with Silent Hill. Does Calling even have combat? I really don't know anything about it, but as I said it was left off the list nevertheless. Siren didn't seem like it relied heavily on excessive violence, but then again I haven't played more than the demo. I don't think my assumption was unreasonable at the time.

I am not familiar with Calling.  I see it has a November release date in Japan, but I couldn't see a US release.  I completely ignored Japan releases deliberately as the vast majority of us would not likely play them.  I am not sure where the Siren thing came from.  It is a download from PSN and I have never heard of it.

Linkyshinks is pretty much correct, in that survival horror isn't really my thing.  I did say that I might try Silent Hill as it would be my first in the franchise.  I am getting a little more into survival horror after Resident Evil 4 Wii and I am willing to try the better ones if they catch my attention.  It is the Wiimote that has got me in.  I just like how it controls as a gun or knife.  House of Dead Overkill has been the most fun I have had in a game in a long time, but mainly due to the humour.  I am also looking forward to giving Dead Space Extraction a go, as well as the Resident Evil, but iike Umbrella Chronicles (which I liked), they are on-rails shooters.

It really doesn't matter if we disagree on what we like and it might get boring if we "preached to the converted" in all our conversations.  Thanks for being polite about it, unlike a few.  I thought I pretty much got all the decent PS3 releases for the next 5 months, but I use playasia pre-orders for my source, so it may be missing some.  I personally don't see the 360 release list to be in the slightest bit better than the PS3, and given the choice, I would buy a PS3 over a 360 right now.

@oldschool: Siren was among the list of games I gave to you at one point when you were trying to decide what PS3 games you'd be interested in, and as I said you dismissed it outright.

After a more thorough look, I also notice Metro 2033 (probably not your thing anyway), ModNation Racers, and any downloadable titles are missing.

Man, I have a shit memory then.  Assuming I did (and there is no reason not to believe I did), it would be that it is PSN and I don't like download games and generally speaking, I don't like survival horror, but I am warming a little to it.

Oh, and I didn't include download titles in the thread as I just wanted to stick to retail.  ModNation Racers looks potentially good and something I would play.  Metro 2033 would be worth keeping an eye on though.  Yes, the FPS doesn't really get me, but I like the fact that it is based on a Russian novel.  To me, it says it could throw up something a little different than the typical FPS.

@oldschool: Here's the thread if you want to refresh your memory. And Siren was released on Blu-ray outside North America.

Haha, it is nice to see your past come back to haunt you  ^_^

In all fairness, all I said was "no".  For me to get a survival horror game it would have to be in the higher range of quality and to be honest, Siren comes across as average.  I would rather eventually spend my money on Resident Evil 5 (which is starting to get quite cheap now).

I've been buying 360 games hand over fist, but between October and the end of next March, I think the only games I'll have gotten for PS3 are Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, Afrika (for the novelty of owning it), MAG (which I'm sure will be delayed and my interest is waning in, anyway), and God of War 3. The only ones of those I don't have are the two that aren't out yet.

Other than God of War 3, I actually can't think of any games coming out in the next 14 months for the PS3 that I'm excited to buy, other than Heavy Rain and The Last Guardian. I'm sure something obvious is slipping my mind, though.

" @trophyhunter: Call me crazy but I actually hate Ratchet and Clank. "
