Games of 2013

List items

  • The greatest franchise to spawn from Nintendo. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is fantastic. I spent 500 glorious hours in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It became a second life for me and I don't regret it.

  • Everything about Fire Emblem is perfect. The writing is top-notch. The combat is fun. The music is fantastic. The social sim elements are absolutely incredible.

I primarily played the game on Casual mode, but contrary to some, Casual mode didn’t diminish the impact of death for me. A lost of a character in battle meant I lost a chance at improving a Support relationship and that’s devastating to a guy playing match maker.

  • My extreme dislike of Skyward Sword made me afraid for the way future Zelda games would be handle, but A Link Between Worlds really showed me how much Nintendo is trying to change up Zelda. The renting system was an interesting way to handle items. It may have not been the greatest way, but it’s a step in the right direction and the ability to explore Hyrule right out the gate felt so good. No longer was I restricted to certain areas because I didn’t have the correct items or didn’t get to that part of the story. A Link Between Worlds has revived the Zelda franchise for me and I’m excited to see what Nintendo has next for Zelda.

  • From beginning the end, Saints Row IV was at a level of ridiculousness I absolutely adore. Saints Row IV is such a video game ass video game

  • I completely forgot this came out 2013, but Brave New World added a whole new dimension to the Civ V game, which truly changed how I played the game and it's just fantastic. Also I'm coming for you Sweden, you can't embargo me forever!!

  • Rewiring a light switch to open a door or rewiring a gun to turn off a light. The Crosslink tool is so much fun to use. Gunpoint is fun!

  • The environments, characters, bosses, weapons, just everything visually about this game is absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, Vergil is not playable in the Bloody Palace DLC so no game of the year for DMC!

  • I cannot stop playing Volgarr. It's violently challenging and the learning curve is so perfect. Every challenge can be easily overcome not matter how insane or impossible it may seem at first. Volgarr takes skill and I really appreciate that.

  • Yes, okay, there are a ton of breasts all over this game, but the actual action side-scrolling elements in Senran Kagura are pretty good and work really well with the 3DS controls.

  • The Stanley Parable is a game you need to experience. It’s all about player choice and the false sense of freedom. The writing is witty. The narration is fantastic. Look, just go on Steam, download the standalone demo, and enjoy.
