Why I Play Dynasty Warriors

The latest bombcast got me thinking of why I enjoy playing these games.  And the Fact of the matter is that to me these are just plain fun. There is just something about mindlessly sitting back and cutting dudes. Honestly I usually don't pay attention to the story.  Just skip all that so I can just jump right in. And Jeff is right, these games are not very good. They have very low production values so every thing looks rather terrible. But in the end that doesn't matter because the joy is in the game play. Though I think the games have become worse. I say that because some things have been replaced over the years that maybe should not have. For example they got rid of Bodyguards and have adapted the Renbu system. The Renbu system is a real bother to me since it takes a lot out of the game. Now all you do it hold down the attack button and you attack forever. I liked it better when you actually had a move set with different combinations of attack and charged attacks.  I just picked up DW6:empires  and there is just something strange about the game play that at first glance is not as fun as DW5. Maybe I just have not played much of it yet. I guess that has to be it since I have only been able to get one mission.

Well I hope my thought shed some light on why these games are still being bought and made and why a player like me enjoy playing them.

Here's why I play the game:  I'm a loot whore.  The "Warriors" franchises (Dynasty, Samurai, Orochi) all feature tons of loot whoring to be had.

Also, they were playing on EASY!  Any chimp with an opposable thumb can play a Warriors game on EASY!!!  I don't mean this as any offense to the Giant Bomb crew, but frankly, showing a game off on EASY and even STATING that it is on EASY is basically saying "we're not taking this seriously in any way, and basically just want to make fun of something we have never mastered".  Kick that difficulty up a little bit and you'll find a BLISTERING challenge.  THAT is why people continue to play those games:  loot whoring and the challenge of the toughest difficulty settings.  You don't just run into enemies and fight them when you get to that point...

I barley play Dynasty Warriors but im sort of getting back into it. I played quite a bit of DW2 but only played them demo until now when im picking it back up at 6. And to be honest I dont really know why I like it, perhaps its the simplicity of the action where for the most part you feel like a god amongst men. The only "difficulty" being the fight against "boss" characters and there hordes of minions where its more about keeping moving and positiong yourself correctly than increasing hard button combinations. I also like how the circumstances keep changing, for example in the first level of Dynasty Warriors 2 (the Yellow Turbin Rebellion of all places) after you have progressed through the fort and are about to ascend the hill a sorceror casts a spell to make heavy wind come down making it incredibly hard to ascend up the hill, especially as the minions are hurtling down at incredible speed, coupled with the fact that one hit will take you to the buttom while you lie on the ground.

Its comforting while getting my behind handed to me by Operation Flashpoint: Elite (which im currently playing on the Xbox) and varous Multiplayer games on PC where im "completely in the game" and its intense that IC an sit down and just feel awesome.

Though its not really an explanation as to why there good, maybe its a reason why they dont suck.

Oh and side note, the graphics, animation and story are never good, only passable. And I have only ever bought 2 Dynasty Warriors game (2 and 6, well 1,2 and 6) and dont plan to get another one for a while. Ive almost had my fill of this style of game.

They were playing on Easy and were still getting beat up pretty hard. I couldn't watch the whole thing as I found it very aggravating.

I remember getting my butt handed to me the first time, though admittadly I was only about 12 then but I found it very hard and kept getting surrounded and couldent get a hang of it for a while. Shouldent hate on them for being terrible since they admitted having not played it for years if ever.
