Games of the year, 2014

So, before I get started, I'd like to point out that I haven't had a chance to play Dragon Age: Inquisition, Far Cry 4, Alien: Isolation, all of which I'm sure I will love. In other words, take this with the grain of salt that is 'I don't have enough time to play everything.'

I would also like to point out a few honorable mentions:

  • Diablo III: Reaper of Souls: This update improved the original game so drastically it felt like a new game. Moreover, when played on new consoles, this game is a staple for the loot fiend in everyone.
  • Sportsfriends: BaraBariBall alone is amazing. Taken with the other games in this compendium, Sportsfriends is a must for anyone with a Playstation and a couple friends.
  • Monument Valley: If there was any ever doubt that the iPad could be a viable, respectful platform for games, Monument Valley eliminates it.
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare: The best entry in the series in a long time. The change in movement alone is incredible and the remix of perks/loadout makes multiplayer deeper and more entertaining in the long run.
  • Threes: I know people who hate games and they love this game (for good reason).

Sadly, this year was fairly lackluster in terms of new titles. I found myself going back to older releases for new content. And, that new content was amazing and kept me hooked more often than new releases.

List items

  • After falling off the Assassin's Creed series, I swore off 'open-world' games for good... or so I thought. Satisfying combat mechanics, a sprawling map of goodies to find, and a crazily-complex system of baddies to expunge- what more could you want?

  • The updates to this game have been amazing and addictive. The community base is as unforgiving as it ever was in 1.6 and Source, but the constant updates to weapon drops, additional maps, and tournament scene made this game even better throughout this year.

  • Never got around to this on PC, but the VITA version is deep, challenging, and one of my favorites for a commute or the couch.

  • It's bold, challenging, and absolutely gorgeous.

  • Improves on many of the shortcomings of its predecessor. Even with a few forgettable bosses, this game is great.

  • This game reminded me why I love video games. Best platformer I've played in years.

  • One of the most gratifying pieces of competitive play I've had this year was when I had a 40/40 Lightspawn and took out my opponent in one hit.

  • Got into this on PC after playing it on PS4. I never thought that an MMO could work on a controller and I'm glad I was wrong. Amazing amount of content and the job system makes this game ridiculously versatile.

  • Everything I love about XCOM combined with Baldur's Gate? Yes, please!

  • I know. I'm addicted to shinies. Sometimes, though, that's okay.
