This game may not show the most tact with its subject matter, but I'm still glad that there are people making weird stuff that goes against the grain in the industry.
100%, yes it's not some AAAA gold star production but not everything has to be. This is cool and weird as shit and I like that they went for it.
I really don't know why they didn't just move to a safer area, they were trying to settle in a area not safe to start in, it's meant for after you gear up and have decent armor and weapons. You could look at it like:
meadows: level 1
dark forest: level 2
mountains: level 3+
Most people spend 5-10 hours in Meadows before they are strong and prepared enough to move on. The Crow guide even tells you to avoid those areas.
Another tip for @jeffgerstmann if you don't start with a water flask then make sure to empty it and fill it with water. You do that by equipping it and stand in water and it should naturally start filling the empty flask. Don't hold "down" otherwise your character will just drink the water. Always have a water flask to put yourself out if you catch fire or to dilute toxic sludge and turn it to water. I also play with the "change spells whenever" mod, it seems more how the game should be naturally. Another tip, always play defensively, especially on the later stages where enemies have fuck tons of health and can deal out damage super fast. Also don't be afraid to explore the top side before entering the cave, there are things to discover.
And hell yes this games hard, after maybe 150 hrs I'v gotten to the last stage maybe twice lol, but it's such a fun game to play I don't care if I can't beat it consistently.
I too had static problems for a while due to a dry indoor environment but I finally broke down and got a humidifierand it's done wonders to both the static and my allergies.

@theonewhoplays:I really enjoyed the first 4-5 hours of the game until I realized that it's a single player MMO, and that includes the CRAP-TON of missions and usually I don't mind grinding in game at all but this one was one I couldn't get past. The game seems really cool but yeah the grinding that seemed to be ahead of me was something I could get past. So take that for what it's worth. It's on GAMEPASS so give it a shot at least Id say.
