Probably will get mentioned but I had to share a similar reaction to Jeff about phoenix down.

I still didn't get it as Jeff got it, because at the time I had never heard "down" to describe feathers before. As everyone was talking about this hilarious bombcast moment where Jeff is saying "Ohhh! DOWN!" I was still fucking confused.

The internet has already been getting mad at every site that dares not to award The Witcher 3 GOTY, so I'm getting my popcorn ready for that.

Things that I'm looking forward to:

  • Mario Maker discussion. I have absolutely no interest anymore in the style of levels that Dan and Jeff make, but it's still amazing if you can find (or make) levels that gel with your personal style. But on the other hand, the way that it's missing a bunch of obvious features is super puzzling, like a total lack of any friends-list integration.
  • MGSV discussion. The number of changes that have happened to that game since launch is incredible.
  • Seeing if GBE actually wants to go to bat for Contradiction. It was a fun game with a lot of heart, but...you know.

To be fair Jeff makes mostly completely different levels from Dan. Jeff got a lot of stars from people who don't know him because he makes a lot of really cool levels.

Also, are people really upset about Witcher 3 not getting GOTY at some places? Isn't this like the best year for gaming in a long time with huge releases like Witcher, Fallout, Mario Maker, MGS5, and a bunch of other stuff? Why is everyone seemingly most hyped about The Witcher 3 of all of these?

As someone who has never played an MGS, MGS5 looks like it should be an insanely popular game because the gameplay just looks so damn fun for the first time in the series. It's crazy to me that people are all into The Witcher 3. And I'm not attacking Witcher, I haven't played it. It seems like a fucking amazing game, but it's in a year surrounded by other fucking amazing games.

I don't remember what the game was, but when the GiantBomb guys were still working at GameSpot they either had a worst title or most long-winded title category in like 2005. One of the nominees or the winner was some game with the most ridiculous name I ever heard. Looked like some JRPG or something and the name was something like PROJECT: X.Y.Z.A.B.C with each letter being pronounced separately there. I could be way off, but it was something that was similar to that, at least.

These are cool and all, but we are forgetting what is really important. What did Dave's envelope say from that one year? Did they ever reveal it? For anyone who doesn't know I think it was for Game of the Year 2008, they were given an envelope from Dave that said to open in case they couldn't decide on an ultimate winner for GOTY. It was definitely referenced in at least the year following, but no one ever revealed what was inside.

I purposefully focused on filling the huge JRPG shaped void in my gaming history. Began this about 18 months ago.

Played and finished FF10, FF6, Xenogears. Loved these games!

Just started FF7 on PS4 and I am enjoying the heck out of it.

Played several of the Ys games.

Nice side effect of this endeavor is I am actually using my Vita!

Same thing for me. This was the year or JRPGS. I have always been terrible about finishing games, especially JRPGS. In an average year I can barely think of any games that I actually start and finish all the way.

I realized that I have started a main save in all of the mainline Final Fantasy games from 1-13 except for FF2, and FF12 (I don't count 11 it was an MMO), but I never beat any of them. I got FF7 on sale on steam January of this year and I played that through the first time. I also wrapped up FF8 on Steam as well. After that I was on such a Final Fantasy kick that I downloaded X/X-2 HD remaster and I beat FFX.

I also beat the last few missions that I needed to beat in Fire Emblem Awakening on 3DS so I wrapped that up. I was also right before the end of Pokemon Y version so I decided to finish that too. I then realized that I still never finished South Park: Stick of Truth, I left off at the Hospital so I was fairly close to the end and I wrapped that up in a couple of days.

I also started and finished both Bioshock Infinite and Legend of Zelda:Link Between Worlds.

Of all of those old games I finished this year I think I really enjoyed all of them.

I'm still at the "last" dungeon in Persona 4: Golden which I bought in July 2014, so I will probably finish that up before the new year as well.

Unlocks are fun as hell. I want to play a game to unlock stuff. I love the Smash Bros. series. I love Melee because I play it on that competitive level and I went to a college with one of the biggest tournament scenes for Melee. Brawl and Sm4sh are games that no one takes seriously on a competitive level and they don't even play as well as Melee. So why did I enjoy those games? Because I enjoy the unlocking of things. You almost always have to unlock more than half of the cast of a Smash Bros. game, and that is fun to me. If all of the characters were already unlocked, I would put nearly as much time into the last two Smash games as I would have. And I'm not saying I regret that time, it was a lot of fun. But that is a situation where the rewarding feeling of unlocking stuff in my game was more compelling to me than the actual gameplay.

@zombiepie: I legitimately liked the ending because I had no idea that anything like that was going to happen. But, then again, I enjoyed the story in the game even though it is pretty nonsensical.

Also, I disagree with the item refining/low-level-run/card game/junctioning system breaking the game because to do any of those to maximum efficiency it requires a lot of time. The easiest way to break the game is to do a low-level-run. And to do that properly there is a lot of time that needs to be spent in the game doing a lot of side things and getting extra magic that helps you avoid getting experience from the few mandatory battles in the game. Playing the game "normally" would probably run the average first-timer a longer amount of time than a "broken" run. This is simply because, while battles become shorter, the preparation becomes much much longer.

But reading your blog posts did make me realize that Final Fantasy VIII doesn't have a good story, but it has great moments. Playing through the story I got to experience some really memorable gaming moments, but I was confusing that with actual plot and story. Also, even though I really like Zell because he is a lovable moron, the game does almost nothing for character development for party members.

@yujinred: Judging from the content of your post, you're not very far into the game. Less than 20% complete I would say. The story goes places and the game has heart, but I wouldn't say it necessarily holds up. Not all of it anyway. There's some super weird story elements like oh hey our beloved party member and the last surviving Ancient just got turned into shish kebab by the main villain......eh, fuck it, let's go snowboarding. The characterization of Barrett being probably the most obvious thing wouldn't be ok today and probably only was acceptable at the time because Japan. There's a lot of sexist overtones to the dialog from Don Corneo's mansion and, um, "things" happening at the Honey Bee Inn to the way Cid treats Sherry (?) to the "who would you do" type dialog from the Turks talking about the female characters in the game. At the same time though, the story does some more interesting things than the trendy backlashers give it credit for. Cloud doesn't have amnesia, I'll just leave it at that since you haven't played it yet. His psychosis suggests something deeper and more interesting than the cliche of the lead character having amnesia.

So I have talked a lot on this website about my experience with FFVII. I finished it for the first time this past summer and I really enjoyed the game. I think it was on the Beastcast that they explained it as probably the easiest JRPG battle system to get into, and I agree. There are a lot of gameplay changes in JRPGs but the combat in FFVI and FFVII probably have the most "standard" battle system.

I had a blast with the actual gameplay. But, as you pointed out, the story is incredibly flawed. I was surprised that there was almost no reaction to the death which is supposed to really set the plot in motion. Like, seriously. They have that quick funeral scene and she is almost never mentioned again by the characters. The end of the game felt rushed, and I was surprised at how short the game was.

Although, I do disagree with what you believe to be sexist. The Turk dialogue is just realistic in the way some people talk.
